I'm going through some of my clothes in the other bedroom downstairs. I am getting rid of all of the 3x clothes, and most of the 2x ones. There are some shells I want to try on to see if they will work under sweaters or suit jackets. I'm going to put them in my car today, so I can drop them off to donate the next time I go to town. Congratulations on your weight loss! Thank you! I've lost almost 85 pounds since early April last year.

I have two of those lazy susan corner cabinets at home and I mostly love them. I went through all of the stuff in the Tupperware/Rubbermaid one last year and really cleared out a lot of the random stuff and organized the rest. For the most part it has stayed fairly organized in spite of my family who can’t seem to follow the program, LOL. The other one has most of the small appliances like the blender, panini press, food processor, the largest pots, oversized mixing bowls and my KitchenAid bowls. We have a weird one at the lake cabin in one corner that I didn’t realize wasn’t like the ones at home until after it was installed. The ones at home have a full round, two level turntable inside so no matter where the turntable is positioned, the corner door can be closed. The turntable in the one at the lake cabin has two levels but it’s only 75% of a circle so the cutout in the lazy susan has to be positioned at the front to close the door which is a bit aggravating. It’s surprising how much less fits in that cabinet as a result. I’m having a hard time picturing the first one, specifically it holding more. Ours is also 3/4 size so there is almost no space wasted.

Ugh, I just came across a large gray tub filled with skin and beauty products from when I moved in 2020. So much money down the drain. 😭
Trying desperately to channel my inner Marie Kondo and tell myself those items served their purpose when I purchased them.

Cleaned out the 'fridge. Ugh...I hate that job! same but I've done it also today It's that generation, I think. My mom struggled with everything. She was certain someone would want all her stuff. It was a very painful experience for us to help her empty her home. definitely - my mum didn't clean out before she passed but I remember her telling us often not to just toss everything, lots was worth something. Spoiler alert...not really. Thank you! I've lost almost 85 pounds since early April last year. awesome! I reorganised my freezer - I am no longer allowed to buy frozen vegetables, lol. We are well stocked AND I get a weekly produce box now so I'm not using many of the frozen ones. OTH I'm down to my last package of boneless chicken which I didn't know. And I think I need to look in my two corner cabinets and see what I'm storing there and whether I need to be....I do hate those cabinets - there's s narrow door on the side and then they got back...and back...and they are dark and hard to reach into.

But you’re right, they did serve their purpose. Plus, the money is already spent, if they’re open they’re expired, and keeping them now just adds to your mental load.

My grandma died last summer and my stepdad's mom just moved to assisted living, so my mom is texting me asking if I want random things that were either of theirs. For example, today she asked if I wanted my grandma's overnight bag, or if I had a use for one stray pillowcase. I know that my mom is very frugal and all, but is this normal? Like, why would my aunt, who found the pillowcase, spend the time sending texts to everyone (and then my mom texting me and probably my siblings as well) about ONE pillowcase? Also, I live in another state. So it's not like she can just run it over to me. Why wouldn't my aunt just donate it? It's that generation, I think. My mom struggled with everything. She was certain someone would want all her stuff. It was a very painful experience for us to help her empty her home. I got to the point where I brought things home and tossed into my own trash can. I was filling up my neighbor's cans, too. I can relate to the pillowcase. My mom shouted at me and literally cried over throwing away half a package of disposable diapers that were at least 20 years old. I fear this is my future. I’ve had the conversation with her countless times when I offer items to her I think she’d be interested in, that I absolutely do not want this stuff to become her clutter and not to take it unless she’s certain she will use it. And the first time she offered me something that felt like she was preemptively offering it before she passed and I turned her down I gently told her that she wasn’t her stuff, and I didn’t need anything to help remember her because I’d think of her all the time anyway. I mean, I don’t have much of her stuff here now and she’s always on my mind. And she knows how I feel about clutter in general. But she is still very sensitive when she offers me things and I don’t accept them. What makes it worse is that she is a 2-pack a day lifetime smoker, so even if was something I would want, it’s likely ruined anyway.

I filled up the back of the car with trash and collapsed boxes and dropped them off at the "convenience center" on my way to Goodwill.

The first ones have full 360° round shelves that are totally inset into the cabinet base. The door is set at an angle in the corner and the shelf can be in any position for the door to close. I’m pretty sure these cabinets are deeper. With the second kind the shelves are only 3/4 of the pie and it has to be turned with the pie cutout at the front so the cabinet door (which is hinged in the middle) can fold in to close. When the door is closed the corner is a 90° angle. Because the two shelves aren’t full circles there is less shelf space to store stuff.

I have the same problem but with things like paint, markers and art supplies that dry out. I’m the kind of person who just HAS to have ALL the colors of something and then have a hard time just using things for fun or to experiment because they are expensive. Except then I don’t use them at all and they dry up and end up getting thrown away. Such a waste.

I got my spring/summer clothes out since I needed some for vacation next week. That made me think about all of the clothes in my wardrobe that I didn't wear this winter. I will likely donate some now but I am tempted to hang onto others to see if I think I will wear them next year. But then I have to store them and take the effort to get them out again in the fall...I am curious what others use as their guideline for what to keep and what to get rid of. I still like most of them but my lifestyle is much more casual now and I just didn't wear sweaters or cardigans nearly as often as I used to.

I still like most of them but my lifestyle is much more casual now and I just didn't wear sweaters or cardigans nearly as often as I used to. I’d take into considerations things like: I have 10 sweaters I really like and are in excellent condition, but I only wear sweaters 2 x a month…I don’t need 10 sweaters. So I’d dump them in a pile and pick out my favorite, then 2nd…up until I hit the amount I decided to keep, rather than going through them one by one. You wouldn’t think so, but it’s actually a good mind shift. And I’d only keep 2. (Actually, that is how many I kept, and I haven’t worn either of them all winter.) I know you’re in the north and have a much bigger need for warm clothing than we do. How many times a week do you average wearing a sweater or a cardigan? If I was really trying to cull my wardrobe I’d only keep enough for a week’s worth of wear. If I wanted more selection I’d probably keep enough for 2 weeks. Confession: in high school I wore my outfits on average once every 6 weeks. Crazy! Oh, something else to consider: don’t get rid of all of your dressy sweaters. You may not wear them that often, but I’m sure you’d find a use a few times a season. I’m boring and I like a simple style so if I was only keeping one or two I’d choose a black v-neck sweater because it can be worn with lots of different styles of pants and jewelry to dress it up or dress it down. Same with a dressier cardigan, one that was neutral and could go with anything. The look of it can be changed with the pants, jewelry and shoes, but also a different colored tank or shell underneath. Regardless of how many I kept, I’d make sure that I feel fabulous in all of them. Confident and comfortable. You deserve to wear your best stuff every day. You deserve to feel amazing every day.

I still like most of them but my lifestyle is much more casual now and I just didn't wear sweaters or cardigans nearly as often as I used to. I think this last winter really wasn’t normal for us so I wouldn’t use that as a gauge for what to keep and what to purge. I don’t think I wore any of my zip front hoodies for even a whole day this winter which is so unusual. I typically I live in them all winter long but this winter was so unseasonably warm that I was mostly comfortable in just long sleeve t-shirts. I can see getting rid of things because your lifestyle changed and they’re just not needed anymore though. For me, if it really doesn’t fit right or feel comfortable, it’s easier to let those things go. If it’s stained or ratty looking, it’s also pretty easy to move those things along. I have a harder time with things that are comfortable but still sort of presentable, or things that *almost* fit but are new.

Daily declutter task from My Simpler Life Declutter Calendar:
Spend 15 minutes decluttering another bathroom or room.
What are y’all working on this weekend? I’m not feeling motivated and my body has given me a hard no to anything strenuous so here it’ll mostly be digital decluttering and working in my project room to declutter a physically big project. I have some brass lamps I’d like to try and salvage, but if I can’t, they need to GO.

I went through my winter clothes and have a garbage bag to donate. I also went through my summer clothes bins enough to find things to take on the trip. Hopefully this will get me in gear to lose some weight before summer. Ugh. I’m not ready to wear shorts yet but it will be 85 degrees in Florida next week. I am going to take some long pants as well but don’t want to be sweltering. We are sharing suitcases so I’m trying not to overpack.

dewryce Oh, no. Stuff from a smoker is a deal breaker for me, sadly. My sense of smell is my superpower. I can't handle that smell. I've told my kids to just say no thank if I offer them something from my house. DD is good at it, LOL. DS told me threw stuff away. I told him skip that step and just say no! I don't care. I'll donate or toss.

Also, I know that the goal is to get to a more reasonable amount of clothing, and I still have a lot. But has anyone put organizers in your closet and if so, did it help quite a bit with organization, making things more visible, etc? We have a smallish walk-in closet. There is one bar/shelf that goes around the three sides and then underneath I have some other plastic drawers and shelves that give additional storage, but it's not ideal. Our shoes are on shoe racks on the shelf to make better use of that space. I feel like there has to be a better solution that wouldn't cost a fortune.

Our shoes are on shoe racks on the shelf to make better use of that space. I feel like there has to be a better solution that wouldn't cost a fortune. We have a decent sized walk in closet for both of us. My side had a high and low bar on one side and only a high bar on the other side, presumably for dresses, with a spot in the middle with shelves on top and 3-4 shallower drawers on bottom. I ended up taking out the two half height bars and put in full shelves going across that section, I think six shelves about 5’ across. While it’s still not perfect, it’s so much better than it was since most of what I wear is long or short sleeve t-shirts, zip front hoodies, jeans or joggers in the fall/winter or shorts/capris in the spring/summer and I don’t hang any of that on hangers. DH and I both have stuff hanging on the one bar that remains. He decided last fall to convert the section on his side that had a high bar for dress shirts into shelves like I have. He only has a handful of dress shirts but loads of work t-shirts so this works better for him too. His side had more shelves than I did to start with. We went to Menard’s and bought the laminated shelf boards because we already had the predrilled laminate closet organizer frames installed in the closet when we bought the house. DH cut them to size to fit between the sides that were there, added some shelf pegs and that was all we needed for my side. For his side he added a wall brace bracket down the center for extra support as well because his shelves ended up being longer.

I love the Elfa system from The Container Store and started using it when I was 19. You know, 10 years ago It’s now in almost every closet in our home and the garage. It is costly, though they do have good sales, but at least one of the home improvement stores has their own version now. I bring up TCS because they have pre-designed options and a tool to help you customize one. The custom one is towards the bottom of the page. So you could look there for ideas and to do a quick build-out to see how that might look in your space, and then purchase from the home improvement store. Make sure you know what options will be available for you from them so you don’t put together a design an aren’t able to recreate it. Create an account and it will save your designs This is the link to the Classic Elfa, which is epoxy covered wiring. There is also one for Design Elfa, or something like that, that includes solid shelving. If you do decide to get an actual Elfa system, they have people in store that’ll help you design it if you’d like, you just need to bring in measurements and clothing/accessories counts. I’d also be happy to help. Another thing to consider is what else you store in your closet and do you want to keep it in there? Luggage, travel items, maybe momentos, etc. Oh, we have a big drawer we use for dirty clothes. We know when it reaches a certain point that it’s time to run a load. However, and this is a big however, I highly recommend you finish decluttering your closet, or at least get very close, before you invest any money in a closet system. Especially since your circumstances have changed and you dress more casually. Because right now, you don’t know how much linear hanging space you need, how many shoes/purses to store, how many clothes to go in drawers, etc. I hang everything that isn’t my inside the house clothes, so I’m down to 3 drawers. 4 if you count lingerie stored out of the closet in my nightstand. And I use 3’ to 4’ of linear space at best guess. That is very different than what it would have been before I finished decluttering, but after I had done so numerous times already. But DH, even after doing an excellent job decluttering, has 10 or 12 drawers and a foot or more of hanging space than I do. We have an entire units’ worth of empty drawers now and would design the closet differently. Fortunately, we didn’t buy much to customize this closet because we already had so much so we didn’t waste any money. But that might not be the case with an entirely new system for you. Our smaller luggage is stored on the top shelf, about 5 or 6 feet, and we have 7 feet or so of travel items. We used to travel at least once a month and that is so helpful! I’d also recommend a valet bar or empty hanging space for you to use while you’re deciding what to pack so it’s out of the way. And counter or solid space for the same since you guys will likely be traveling so much for the next 4 years while your son plays ball.

Daily declutter task from My Simpler Life Declutter Calendar: What situation are you trying to control that you can let go of? Eeesh. That’ll make you think! I will have to give that some good though. This week the last three bags of kids books went out, and I am so, so happy. It's a figurative and literal weight off me. My next goal is an organizational one. We have numerous appointments already scheduled between now and the summer, and I need to keep track of them. I need to write out an at a glance sheet to reference.
Have you tried using the calendar on your phone? It can take a bit to get used to, but you always have it with you and you can set reminders for each appointment and I find that super helpful. I normally do one 2 days before in case I completely forgot about it. And one again 2 hours prior prior so I have time to shower and get there. You also have the ability to check your calendar as you make appointments, and get them in there immediately. I use the one on my iPad because I use it much more than my phone and do always have it with me, but there is supposed to be a way to sync them together. I’m actually considering one that my husband (Samsung) and I (Apple) can share. Thanks linda ! The CGP and Daily Declutter Calendars are syncing up again this week because we’ll be working in bathrooms, master and other. I don't know why, but having it on paper is the only way that works for me.
I do use the phone for reminders that it's coming up, but I need to have it written down to really keep track of it all.

For stuff like that, I have a magnetic calendar stuck to the metal service door to our garage, the one I have to walk through to get to my car to leave the house. I write all of the school stuff, upcoming appointments, the trash days that the recycling needs to go out, when our bottled water is going to be delivered, days when there is no school on that calendar where I will see it multiple times a day. It definitely helps to have that constant reminder of what’s coming up in the weeks ahead. I use the phone calendar too because of the notifications and because I always have it with me, but I transfer all of that to the calendar on the door.

KITCHEN AND PANTRY Kitchen Closets: Empty them! Pull everything out. Use trash bags, boxes, etc to sort and redistribute your items. Remember-places would love donations of kitchen items. If you have not used something in a few months, chances are you just will not use it so donate it. Kill the clutter! Kitchen Cabinets: Tackle one by one if the job seems overwhelming. Start above counters, on one side of the room and work in one direction & when done, tackle cabinets below the counter. Save the under-sink area for last, for me it was the hardest. Get Rid Of: Old, currently unused cleaners Cans & Bottles of food over 6 months old unless there is a later expiration date. Old cracker/cookie boxes probably stale Pans & pots that you don’t use, have duplicates of, are in horrible shape, etc. Extra serving dishes (store them elsewhere unless you have lots of room) until needed. Donate if you have not used them in the past six months. Check any open boxes for bugs. Don’t forget to wipe down empty shelves, re-line (if necessary). If you store medicines in the cabinets, check expiration dates. Verify prescription items with your pharmacist. Throw out medicines that “didn’t work”, expired or tasted so horrible you won’t use them, etc. Don’t forget to empty drawers, clean inside, then replace items. Get rid of duplicate items (utensils) if you can. Clean all appliances inside and out (refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker–use vinegar once through, followed by several rounds of water– stove vent, etc.) Sink: Use a toothbrush to get rid of gritty dirt at faucet. Clean drains, disposal, etc Use favorite cleaner to make “shine”. Pantry: Use same method as for the cabinets. don’t forget to wipe down while empty. Try to combine duplicate boxes of things to throw out that which you haven’t and probably won’t use. When this is done, you will probably want to dust any appropriate items, vacuum from ceiling to floor, including vents/ a/c ducts, clean any windows, and sweep & wash the kitchen floor (I always do that last!) As far as I’m concerned this is probably one of the hardest rooms in the house. If you have tile on your counters or table, this is a good time to spray them down and clean and reseal the grout. Be ruthless! Go through every drawer, cabinet, counter. Did you take time to do all that work and sell yourself short? Did your Mama tell you a job worth doing is worth doing well??? Well go ahead an “git”: make that kitchen shine. Go through the spices and the cookbooks again. I know there are things you still really need to do

Today I decluttered the table that is sort of an entrance/mail/key drop off point.
For months it has held a mountain of items that needed a home, but I couldn't come up with a good solution.
Well, today I rearranged a couple things, and made homes for the stuff (it is all used daily & weekly)
Now the table is clear but for the key dish, and lamp. It makes the livingroom look so much better.
I still have paperwork hanging over my head today. I worked on a little bit today, but have more to go.

Dh went through a few flashlights he had. Some had corrosive old batteries in them. He tossed a couple of them. I shredded a bunch of paper. Cardboard has been put in the blue re-cycling bin. Sold a couple of items in Facebook Marketplace (tucking that money aside). Went through some things.

LavenderLayoutLady No I get it, I’m the same way. Writing things down, in general, helps me retain them so much better. And it helps organize my thoughts. Typing them out helps, but is not nearly as effective. I also have a written planner, and then put things that need reminders into my calendar on my iPad.

Doing little bits of the paperwork that's hanging over my head. Paid two bills. Did the budget.
I was wondering if anyone else here reads r/UnfuckYourHabitat & r/ufyh on Reddit. Also r/declutter, and even r/hoarding .
They sometimes give me a little push of motivation.

DH came home with a box of freebies yesterday - mostly coloured pencils and markers -DD went through and took a handful she wanted - and the rest minus the trash and dried out pens which went IN the bin - was delivered to a teacher friend along with some other school supplies and books we had set aside for her. Thanks for the reading suggestions LavenderLayoutLady - I'll check them out
