iamkristinl16 My late MIL was sort of like that. My husband, sister-in-law, and I filled a dumpster in an hour and a half with things and we only got through 1 room and a closet a few years ago. What she didn't see us taking never crossed her mind (mostly because she didn't help and was watching TV the whole time we were cleaning stuff out). There are absolutely things that my husband would love to still have from his childhood home, but keeping a clean house and scooping cat litter boxes was never my MIL's strong suit. She wanted us to have a set of dishes that she had set aside for him, but we would never in our lives have eaten off of them because they were, well, gross... My father in law now has someone who helps him clean around the house, and while it's better than it had been, it's nowhere near where it could be. My mom told me that stepdads siblings told her and stepdad not to let his mom go upstairs in her house because they had thrown a lot away. So of course my mom went up there. She said she took two bags of stuff out of the garbage to donate instead (crayons was one thing that she mentioned).

We have found the life of the newer fridges to be 4 years on average. We’ve had repair guys and appliance salespeople tell us that Good grief - that's discouraging especially how expensive they are It’s been a rough week emotionally so not much has gotten done. (((Hugs)))

natscraps I loved selling off my kid’s stuff at consignment sales like that! We moved so many things out the door with those sales! Clothes, shoes, toys, books, bedding. The last one I sold at was the top end of the sizes they accept, so I think I’m done with that phase of life. It was so nice though to be able to make enough money selling off DD’s old stuff to buy all the new things she needed.

Can’t wait to hear your report for day 2 of organizers! The drawer organizer replaced a baby blue plastic one that I've had for almost 30 years. It was time for something fresh. I picked up a clear, lucite (sp?) one at Marshall's, put all of my utensils in, and it looks great. Tonight's task was organizing miscellaneous makeup items. I also got a new organizer for these items at Marshalls. As a result, I now have half-full gallon zip-lok bag full of "gift with purchase" sample sizes to donate to Volunteers of America.

Here goes peas… 1. Decluttered the side fence line by pulling out all my strawberry plants and sweeping the dirt back under the fence and off the concrete. The strawberries will grow back, no dramas there 😁 2. Weeded the front gardens - filled the green waste bin 3. Pulled down the rusted soccer goal from out the back and put it in the bin for next weeks collection (why do I only ever want to do this right after the bins have been collected?!??) 4. Threw away all the remaining bubble mix containers from out the back. Kids haven’t been into bubbles for ten years now 🥲 5. Planted two plants that I had sitting in pots (received as a gift for the garden, haven’t planted for two years!!!) 6. Collected all remaining empty pots from out the back and put near the back door to make it easy to clean out and take to the next markets in a few weeks. 7. Took hubbys shirt to be mended, put a button back on another shirt.
😮💨!!!

Empty out, clean and declutter the utensil crock.
I don’t like things on countertops, but our utensil drawer could probably use a good wipe down!

Four small bags of stuff from my dining room out the door to Volunteers of America today. Also bought a new Shark Stainstriker portable carpet cleaner and DH put it together and used it tonight. It's great for the not-yet-potty-trained puppy. I've been looking at my kitchen utensil crocks all week and knowing that they need to be pared down before the organizers come Monday. As tired as I am, that's a pretty easy task I can handle before I go to bed tonight. Thanks, Dewryce! ETA: Completed.

Yesterday, I went through 7 shoe boxes of receipts. Shredded a large bag and killed the shredder in the process.
Why, you ask, were there 7 shoe boxes of receipts? My system was to keep receipts for 6 months to a year, in a shoe box located in the storage room (on the shredder), at which point it was to be burned.
Did I share the clutter pile of items I had previously tossed in the trash and recently discovered in DH’s garage? There are a number of shoeboxes of receipts in the garage (the stove used to burn these things is here).
When I was taking care of my father after he fell ill, I passed the bills on to DH. He knew I put receipts in the shoebox. However, he only recently told me he had been putting the HSA receipts in the boxes, too. So, I decided to tackle them yesterday. In the process, I found a $50 bill and a fair amount of HSA receipts and the missing bank statements.
Also discovered the bills need to be entirely electronic, because DH didn’t bother to open anything over the last year.
Thrilled to be able to replace the shredder, though.

Last week was kind of hectic so I didn’t do much around the house. I need to get a few more things posted on Buy Nothing and anything that doesn’t go that way will get donated the following week just to get it out the door. I want to make a good push to get our front room cleared out so DH can’t use that as an excuse to not pull out the carpeting in there. I’m hoping we can get that flooring replaced this spring so we can get the flooring in our family room replaced this summer. We need one room cleared out so we have somewhere to put the furniture from the other room. DH wants to get different furniture for the front room anyway so it’ll be pretty much empty after we install the new flooring.

Yesterday we organized the piles of stuff to be gotten rid of that has accumulated in our dining room. A bunch of old torn kids backpacks and overly loved board books made it to the trash. Boxes are now organized by where they need to go (kids consignment, church rummage, etc) so as I declutter other rooms the stuff can be sorted into right box.
Focusing on the drop zones today. They are out of control again and I really need to find all the tax stuff. Lots and lots of paper and I’ve already decluttered multiple piles. Usually I start a big envelope in January for taxes and as it comes in I toss it in the envelope. With all the sickness I never got around to it. I’m only missing one thing which is the after school care but I’m not sure we even got one this year. I already emailed the person in charge and asked that they send a new one.

I've started another bin of things to donate. I've listed the items out, but I need to take pictures before I put the bin in the car. It's a clear plastic tote that is cracked along the bottom, so it can leave the house as well.
I have a large bookcase unit in my room - it's about 10 feet across and about 7 feet tall. There are four sections up top with one foot deep shelves and four cabinets on the bottom that are two feet deep. The shelves on the top have adjustable shelves - 3 of them have 4 shelves, and the far left has 5. I had planned for all 4 sections to have 5 shelves, but due to the position of the lowest permanent shelf, I cannot make 5 shelves work with all of my books.
My goal for today is to clean out one of the bottom cabinets and put all of my lego sets in the cabinet. One of the other base cabinets stores my games. I need to go through it soon to see if I can streamline it.

tossed a laundry basket today that was broken...we have sufficient, no need to hold on to one that the bottom is coming off of.
Tossed two bags of babybel cheese - PSA it does NOT freeze (well it does freeze but eating it afterwards was YUCK).

Well, in trying to organize my cabinets, I found a wardrobe of new clothes for my continued weight loss efforts. It's a bunch of brand new Talbots stuff from 2019 in size medium that i bought on clearance. Fortunately, most of it is cardigans and other timeless items of clothing, so it doesn't really matter that it's 5 years old.
I found some other things that I want to get rid of, but it will be tricky with my mom. I never can tell what she will fixate on.

We can compost expired, moldy etc items from the fridge in our green cart. Plastic containers etc go in the blue cart. We also have our own compost on the go year round in the back yard with leaves etc. we put very little garbage in the black cart every two weeks. Batteries and light bulbs are re-cycled at Ikea.

Week 9Family Room, Den or Rec Room Since the Family Room is much like the Living Room, consult the notes from that week as well, to be sure we haven’t missed anything! Here goes! Start by washing the outside of your windows. Take everything down off the walls, take down curtains etc. Wash, vacuum or dry clean as needed. Sweep ceiling corners and other nooks in the room – tops of doorways, windows, arches, bookcases, etc. Wash inside of windows and sills. Polish and touch-up stain on wood. Re-hang window coverings. Take cushions off furniture, vacuum thoroughly. Vacuum cushions, checking for wear and turning as needed. Spot treat any stains or shampoo furniture as needed. Wooden furniture and anything with drawers: Empty, sort, and throw away what you don’t really need. Put the rest where it really belongs. Dust/Polish the piece you’re finished with, repeat as necessary. Do shelves the same way. Baseboards – dust or wash as needed touch up scuffs on wood or touch up paint on painted surfaces. Clean the TV screen. Dig out and sort all the accumulated electronic equipment–games, tapes, camera parts, wires, connectors, etc. Put everything where it belongs and get rid of the rest. (I stash things for a few months in the attic and if they don’t miss it then I can dispose of it as I please!) If something doesn’t work, take action–if it is worth getting fixed then decide when it can be done. Otherwise just liquidate it now. Vacuum the entire room. Use a whisk broom to get into those hard to reach areas and around the baseboards if your vacuum doesn’t clean close enough. Yes, get help and move the furniture. There may be a wealth of lost treasures hiding under the sofa right now! Clean/change silk flower arrangements for the season. It is also a good time to clean, trim, and/or repot live plants. They can’t absorb CO2 and light through a layer of dust! Other items needing attention if you have them are: Fireplace/mantel/chimney/glass doors Lamps – cleaning and/or replacing shade/bulb/wiring Light switches (clean) Mirrors and anything framed under glass clean it. Door handles–and the area around them– if you have little sticky fingers be sure to get the area below them clean too with an appropriate cleaner. Polish the wooden doors and retouch scuffs. Clean shake/wash/vacuum/take to professional– any area rugs. Now is a good time to reorganize the video tapes and CDs ,Cassettes etc. If you have not viewed or listened to them in a while, donate or take to a consignment shop or a second hand music store and swap meet

We don’t have compost recycling curbside here. There is a program where we can collect it in a compostable bag but then we have to take it to a certain place with a special compostables dumpster which is a ten minute drive one way and not in a direction that I typically go. I tried doing it but it was really inconvenient to have to make multiple trips to the dumpster per week, especially at the height of summer when the collection bucket would quickly start to stink. If I had space in my freezer I could probably freeze it until I had enough to take over in a single trip, but I honestly don’t have space in my freezer for compost. We do have a spot way in the back of our yard for grass clippings and leaves/brush, but not for anything that would draw in wild animals like raccoons, possums, etc. I do recycle anything else that can go in the recyclables cart and just took a whole quart sized ziplock bag full batteries to the hardware store for recycling that.

We don’t have compost recycling curbside here. we don't have any kerbside recycling at all - we can drop off cans, newspapers, corrugated cardboard, glass, and soda/milk bottles at the firehouse and plastic bags/wraps, egg cartons, and paper bags at the grocery store but that's it. Oh and the computer guys take electronics for recycling. I do have a compost tumbler but yeah, living in a neighbourhood does limit what I'm okay putting in it. AFAIK there isn't a compost drop-off - we can take yard waste to the dump but it only composts in the sense that it might eventually break down.

Saturday morning I went through my clothes that are in my room currently (spring and summer are in the basement still), and have 4 grocery bags to donate today. Also have a grocery bag of books to donate. And I listed some things for sale in some FB groups (for those types of items). 2 packages will be mailed on my lunch hour today!! So that's a good start!! Also listed a few more things on Mercari.

Daily declutter task from My Simpler Life Declutter Calendar:
Declutter your purses, wallets and handbags.
I went through these when I did our master closet earlier this year and got rid of one that I was in love with, but never used. I have my everyday bag, a small black and small brown bag, a clear one for sporting events, a beaded black clutch for evening use, and an old silver mesh one of my Granma’s. But it’s so small I don’t know that I’d ever really be able to use it so I need to think long and hard about keeping it. If there is another one I didn’t think of off the top of my head then I probably should consider letting that one go too!
Fess up, who has more purses than shoes?

If you love it, then I would have it framed/shadow boxed and display it. If you don't want to hang it you could always display on a stand on a shelf. No, I don’t remember her using it and I never borrowed it. There were some earrings I borrowed for a Homecoming Dance that I’d love to have because it was a big deal that she loaned them to me and I felt like such a grown-up! Unfortunately, her Alzheimer’s was pretty advanced before Grandad found her amazing care home and she threw away a lot of her jewelry, including those earrings and her wedding rings. Or maybe we’ll find them in some place really unexpected when we go through the house. Anyway, I was keeping it because I thought I’d use it for the theater or ballet, but looking at it again, it is just way too small. So I’ve been researching to see if I should sell it or maybe give it to a NIL to play with. Confession: I did find another purse I had forgotten about. In my defense, I just got it last year IIRC, and it’s a summer purse so I haven’t used it yet. I do love it though, and it will be nice to use this one instead of the smaller leather ones. It was also Granma’s and I do remember her using this purse, along with several like it. And I only have one tiny, cheap, RFID blocking wallet so I didn’t have any of those to go through. Question: My small leather purses have leather handles that are supposed to stand straight up. But I discovered that my cat had been sleeping on top of the purses, so they both curve in to each other. What’s the best way to fix that? I was thinking heating them up a little and letting them dry while propped in the correct position, but think I’d need to condition them beforehand if I do that. Thoughts?Confession #2: Discussing purses reminds me of something I donated that I wish I hadn’t. I have 2 very simple, structured, quality small leather purses. They’re rectangles, about 5x5x10ish. I got them over 20 years ago and have them in black and dark brown. But I also used to have the same purse in red and cream. The red could be fun every now and again, but no great loss. But I’d love to have the cream one for summer. I think I got rid of it because at the time my work summer wardrobe still lent itself better to the darker colors. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’d happily make a hundred of those mistakes to be able to have such a clutter-free and organized home day in and day out. But everyone always asks if people regret decluttering some things, and that’s one thing I do regret.

Oh, and while I’m not getting a lot of decluttering done (mostly digital and some daily declutter calendar tasks) I am going through my crafting supplies. I’m very slowly going through a drawer or two at a time in my craft room and getting rid of items I can now acknowledge I’m not keeping because I’m in love with them, rather because I could see myself using them in the future. I have plenty of room and my craft supplies are super organized, but I recognized that having them is affecting my crafting mojo so out they must go! eta: Just finished catching up on the thread for the last day or two, y’all have been really productive! Sold some items in Facebook Marketplace this week. Cleaned some windows inside and out yesterday. Dh helped me clean out and wipe down the fridge today. Got rid of some expired things. This is a good reminder for me because trash day is tomorrow and I hate discovering something scary in the fridge on Monday afternoon that should have gone out in the trash. Something I do that helps me to do this is attach it to something we are already doing. The fridge gets wiped down well inside right before we get our new groceries for the week. It’s practically empty at that point except for the condiments in the doors. And when doing so I check to see if a drawer needs to be taken out and cleaned out, because it’s 3 minutes then or a lot more time and living with gross if I wait too long. But doing it almost every week mostly keeps it from getting to the point where it needs a super deep clean that takes ages. I say mostly, because DH didn’t put something on a plate and when it thawed it got in almost every crevice on the way down. So we did just have to take the inside of the fridge apart (even the structure that holds the drawers) to do a deep clean. But I think he learned a lesson and that won’t be an issue in the future And then to prepare for trash pickup tomorrow I’ll go through and get all of the trash upstairs tonight, spot clean the trash cans, and wipe down/clean out the snack fridge upstairs. DH will do the 2 trash and downstairs as well as take anything from the main fridge that needs to go. That way it’s not sitting in our trashcan in the garage for a week. Tying them to something that’s part of an established routine made it super quick to pick those habits up! I try and use that strategy whenever possible when wanting to form a new habit.
