As a spinoff of new release threads, please share your process for evaluating & determining which supplies to add to your wish list. TIA.

If I really like a line, I go through these steps.
Step one: Do I have something similar? Usually the answer is yes. Don't buy it. Step two: Do I have pictures printed right now that I could use for the layout? Usually I have paper already chosen for my pictures. Step three: Is it really cute and does it have deer or insert other creatures? If yes, buy it.

I am getting to the point that I am being choosy about what new products I bring in, so I have to really love it and it has to be different than something I already have. Unless they are alphas, then I buy. I can't help myself with alphabets and numbers.

I’ve never thought about it to be honest. I suppose my thought process goes something like this…
1. Is it Shimelle? Buy all the things! Preorder! 2. Is it a company I like? Yes, I’ll check it out immediately. No, I’ll check it out but wait. 3. Do I like the colors? 4. Is it a theme I’ll use? 5. If both of those are yeses, I’ll pick the papers I like then go through embellishments. 6. After all that, it will sit in my cart for awhile sometimes. I may purchase or something else might come up and I empty my cart and start the process again. Sometimes just shopping will remind me of things I have and inspire me to use them.

Is it a brand I usually like? If not, I might not look at it as closely... Did the overall color scheme or theme catch my attention? Did the color scheme or theme really catch my attention but when it's separated into individual papers and not a screenshot of the papers in a pleasing order (rainbow order sometimes tricks me) does it still stand out? Do I like the patterns? How much of it do I know I would use, do I need the entire collection, or would 3-4 sheets of paper do it? What kinds of embellishments are there, and would I use them? Do I have a lot of this theme/color in my stash, or is it running low?
I think that's what goes through my brain when I see new stuff. Cost of what I want versus what is a reasonable amount also goes in there somewhere.

This is what I’ve been trying lately:
I don’t buy anything until I let it sit in my cart for a while. If I forget about it. It was just a FOMO thing.
If I still want it, I start cutting back on some of the stuff in the cart because even though I like it, I probably won’t use everything. And sometimes I don't even buy it and completely forget about it. I consider that a win.
Sometimes there is a highly sought after item (not collection) and if I really, really want it, I just buy it.

Very similar to what the posts above read:
- I do like to let things sit in my cart so I can think about them. Or, if we see them in "coming soon" posts, I will go back over and over to see if I continue to feel positive about a line. Trouble with the "sit in the cart" approach is that things do sell out...
- if I've had a similar line in the past and USED it. This happened with an old Doodlebug winter line that was purples and blues: I used every crumb. They just released a similar line, so I felt confident ordering that the moment it arrived.

I have my favorites of course but every so often I pick up a brand I don't usually jive with because I like some of the papers and embellishments.
My thought process is as follows:
1. Is it colors/patterns I really like?
2. Is it general enough that I can use the line for multiple layouts? (Only themed scrapping I do is Halloween and Christmas)
3. Does it go well with lines I already have? Will it be easy to mix and match?
4. Is there enough embellishments that I will get my money's worth? (If there are only 2 of say 20 stickers I will use, I don't buy it)
5. Is there enough paper from the line to make it worth a buy? (If there are only 2 or 3 papers I like and or they are hard to work with paper I already have, it's a no)
6. Is this a line I can use for both dd and ds? (Mega points if the answer is yes)
7. Is the paper quality good? (I don't buy thin paper and am not a big fan of the super thick paper)

Most often I see new releases, comment, and then forget about them immediately There are a few brands that I keep better track of which usually end up on my wishlist until I'm ready to shop. Usually I'm looking at the 6x6 pad, a pack of ephemera, and a couple of 12x12 b-sides that will work for card backgrounds with all the 6x6s, or a few really fun papers I can cut up for simple notecards. If there isn't a good ephemera pack I have to think about whether I have a way to make my own or use a sentiment as a focal point instead, or if there's a cut apart sheet that will work. I know which brands are more usable for my style (Doodlebug, mostly). I usually shop when I have a specific card project coming up and there's something just right for it, but mostly when I've used up a previous version of it.

After several years of buying whatever kits I liked the look of, I have become a bit more discerning over the last 6 months or so.
~ If I love the colours and the patterns of the papers in the kit, I will buy the kit. The elements (embellishments) are only secondary. ~ If I love the colours but the patterns are just okay, I will then consider the embellishments, and if there are enough good embellishments that are a bit different to what I have in my stash, I will buy it. ~ If I really love the patterns but not too keen on the colours, I will consider whether I can easily adjust the colours in Photoshop to something nicer. If I can, I will buy it.
I don't actually mind if I have something similar, it just means I can mix and match.
So I think for me, the most important thing is colour, then patterns.

I look at the new release threads, comment, sometimes add a piece of paper here or a pack of embellishments there to my wishlist and generally forget it about after that. Once or twice a year I'll place an order and pick up some things off my wish list but some of it, I don't care for as much later or it has sold out or it doesn't make it to my final order when I whittle down my cart.
At this point, I'm usually filling in identified gaps in my stash - I usually pick up basics (cardstock, adhesive...) locally

1. Colour and design speak to me, so if I like a collection, or some of its parts, I will know immediately. Time for a closer look.
2. I am a theme scrapper, so if a collection is aimed at one of mys themes, I will look, for sure.
3. I have my fav manufacturers, so I will always check out what is new from them. I won't love everything they produce, but I know I will like the quality.
4. When I look more closely, I think about how I will be able to USE the supplies, either on pages or cards. Now, I don't always buy it all, or use it all--but I have to be able to imagine myself using it before I put it in my cart.
5. With regard to use: I may go back and purchase supplies I had earlier rated low on my list of priorities if I see them used in a way I like on Pinterest or on other sites.
6. I am drawn to something new and interesting, but also new purchases that "go with" what's in my stash.

If I like or love something, it gets added to my online cart.
I try to wait for free shipping preferably without a minimum purchase.
Before I make my purchase, I go though my cart(sometime more than once) and decide if I really want it. Sometimes something that is "like" gets changed to no. Sometimes something that is "love" gets changed to like. Both like and love, are sometimes similar to product I already have and I ask my self if I really need or want it.
Budget and what I can or cannot spend at the time of placing an order, also affects whether something remains in my cart or not. If I remove something from my cart, it doesn't mean it's a no, sometimes it's a "not right now". Usually it's the "like" items" and I save that item to my bookmarks. If I need to add something to my cart to meet a minimum for free shipping, then I look through the "likes" that I have bookmarked.
With online shopping and in-store, there's always impulse purchases or 2nd guessing. With both my online cart and in-store cart, before I proceed to purchase, I evaluate my cart to see if I need and want what's in the cart. I most especially look through my cart ,if I am grocery shopping when I am hungry..... because that is when *my* impulse shopping seems to happen.

1. Is it VB? If yes, look through and pick favorite items. It is has a floral pack, Thickers or stickers I love, buy 2-3 sets and all papers that I like (I never buy all of the papers, but do by multiples of the ones I love, especially florals.)
2. Is it super themey? If yes, skip it all, unless it has a floral diecut pack of foam phrases I’d use. If No…search for favorite papers and embellishments that I would use at least 1/2 of.
3. Is the color palette one I’d use? If Yes…purchase only items I’d use at least 1/2 of. If no, pass.
The only time I purchase an entire collection is my monthly Hip Kit.

Thanks for your responses. I'm neither a collection nor theme scrapper & use patterned paper sparingly with few embellishments, so I focus on the individual papers (usually the versatile/classic patterns on the reverse sides) & stencils before glancing at the stamps/dies & embellishments. Like many of you, I add to an online cart (since there's no LSS here anymore), edit periodically, eventually accumulate enough products to justify shipping, & place an order once or twice per year. Looking forward to the next release...

I have to really love something to buy it. I no longer buy it just because it is by a favorite company.
My first criteria is whether or not I have something similar that I like as well or better. I hve a huge stamp collection, so I’ve gotten very picky about whether or not to buy stamps.
My second criteria is price. I looked at certain dies yesterday. I really wanted to buy them, but they were very pricey for what you get.
If it’s dies, do I have or can I find similar but far less expensive cutting files in the Silhouette Design Store? I prefer the look of dies, especially when stitching is part of the design, but some dies are really over priced. The ones I looked at yesterday fit into that category.
Finally: can I really justify the cost? How much am I likely to use the item(s)?

If I like it, I buy it. That is my whole process. This is basically me as well. lol Although I have got slightly more discerning as I’ve amassed a big collection of supplies and I don’t want it to get much bigger. I have to like it AND realistically know I can/will use it. That lets me let go of some of the things I like.

Over the years I've become more picky about what I buy. My budget doesn't allow me to purchase everything that catches my eye. If it's something that I really do like and think will be usable, I follow what a lot of you do: let it sit in my cart and re-visit it once in awhile to see if I'm still interested in it. And PaperAngel, let me say again how much I appreciate the time you take to let us know about new releases.
