DH had to meet our plumber at our rental to repair a few things. He noticed our tenant has a can of comet under the bathroom sink. He explained that over time, it will can possibly corrode the fittings for the plumbing. I only had a can of Plumber's Bar Keeper's Friend under the kitchen sink so I've moved it to an upper cabinet in the laundry room. ETA: If you've had these products under your sink your entire life and that of your parents, grandparents, etc. don't move it. No skin off my teeth.  |

Ive had a can of Comet under my sink for 25 years and my mom always had one there whn I was growing up. No issues at all!

Thanks! I’m assuming bar keepers friend falls under the category? The Bar Keeper’s Friend I have is a liquid in a sealed bottle so I’m sure that wouldn’t affect anything. Comet is a powder that comes in a can that has open holes on the top once you open it which might be the issue. |

Bar Keeper’s Friend comes in both liquid and powder like comet so it just depends on which one you use. |

I trust the plumber that over time it might cause harm, not to the pipes but to the fittings. |

Thank you for the PSA. I have Barkeepers Friend in a Ziploc, but it's being moved anyone. I had a pipe burst and it caused a big hole underneath my sink last week. Dh has temporarily placed a fix, but in a couple months we're going to replace the entire cabinet when we reface the kitchen.

My pipes under the sink are abs or pex. Fittings are all abs or pex other than the braises lines connecting the faucets. No corrosion issues for me 😁

Comet lives under my sink. I have kept Comet there all of my adult life...50+ years. Never had any problems in any house where I have lived. I don't plan on moving it.

I've kept my sink cleaner and other products under the sink for my entire adult life, with no issues.
I do keep the canister of comet or ajax in a plastic zipped gallon baggie, not because of fear of pipe damage....but because it has a pull off tab that leaves the little dispensing holes open and exposed and if it accidently tips over and spills...... I don't want to have to clean up a spilled mess under the sink. Hence the baggie, if the comet is accidently knocked over, the mess is contained to the baggie.

Interesting!
I always keep my BKF under the sink, but I wish the powder had a better lid. It clumps up so bad for me. I haven't found a really good container to swap it to, and I am a bit hesitant about keeping chemicals in anything but their original packaging.

I did find one article online about someone in TX having issues with open containers of cleaners like that under a sink but it was also a very humid area. I would think humidity would cause the powdered cleaners to clump up in the can which would be reason enough for me to keep them covered. |

Newer homes have PVC pipes, so no corrosion on them.

Years ago I had one of those plastic cat food can lids that I put over the comet but that is long gone. Maybe I should try to find a new cover. It did keep spills from getting messy.

It comes in a foil lined cardboard canister that has literal big holes in the metal top that are exposed when you peel off the sticker that covers the holes when you buy it. Kind of like how old school Parmesan cheese used to come before it came in plastic jars with the shaker top. Unless you have a plastic lid that fits the canister or put it in a ziplock type bag there’s no way to close it. The contents of the can would be exposed to humidity in the air and the stuff inside clumps up if it gets damp or wet. IMO it’s really stupid packaging for a product like that. |

The holes are large and about 6 of them. I never remove the entire sticker. I move it so that only about half are open. |
