What do you use for your backgrounds? Patterned paper or cardstock?
I use both. If I use patterned paper I prefer a heavy one like 49 & Market. If the paper is too thin I'll mount it on a piece of cardstock.
I'm a fan of white cardstock backgrounds and I almost exclusively used textured cardstock. That seems to be really common with a lot of designers. A lot of my inspiration photos are white backgrounds. I know smooth cardstock is better for mixed media but I just feel like the texture adds something extra.
I did use a lot of smooth kraft backgrounds back when that was a trend. I do use colored, textured cardstock sometimes, too. It just matters what I think makes the photo pop.
What do you do?

I find myself using mostly white cardstock backgrounds, but I did go through a patterned paper background phase. For me it depends on the style or even paper collection I'm working on.

But I also really like black backgrounds - I use this a lot for my teen boy pages. If I am using a pattern, I almost always trim a bit and have a cardstock background because I like the grounding and framing look of the solid. I don't like when patterns look like they are flying around too much.

I'll use cardstock (white/black/kraft or coloured) sometimes textured, sometimes not depending on what I have in the right colour. I'll use PP, sometimes I'll trim and use a cardstock border all around, sometimes not. I don't usually do mixed media but I do have some look-alike papers that I've used for backgrounds.

I almost always used patterned paper. I love the look of layouts on white cardstock but I find that blank space intimidating. Maybe that will be one of my challenges this year, to do a layout on white cardstock. For some reason, I find a kraft background less intimidating.

Usually patterned paper. Once in awhile solid paper. I like to mix and match patterns.

I typically start with a patterned paper background, but sometimes will use white (smooth) cardstock. I'm not inclined to use colored cardstock, or textured cardstock.

I like a pattern and a solid for backgrounds. I often use one and then cut it down a bit so I can use a full 12 x 12 of the other for the full mat. I would say I use patterned paper more often.

Most of the time I will use white cardstock as my background. Every now and then I will use another colour cardstock, or mixed media paper, or patterned paper. One thing for sure, I pretty much always add some patterned paper to pages.
When I was a paper scrapper, my cardstock of choice was Bazzill. I still have a ton of it. These days I will use a photoshop style to give my background some texture.
* One day I must work out how to stop my MacBook from always autocorrecting 'cardstock' to 'yardstick' ! Every time!

Mostly patterned paper. I just like the way it looks. I do occasionally use solid colored cardstock but I have to put more thought into the layout so there aren’t too many open spaces. I’m always tempted to do an embellishment dump to fill in the blank areas.

I use both. I like very light, neutral patterned papers or white for mixed media usually. Every once in a while I’ll use black foundations paper for mixed media, too.

One of my favorites using the VB black foundations paper. It’s so fun to use with her watercolors! Click to enlarge so it doesn’t look blurry.

I mostly use white cardstock, but I have been trying to use more patterned paper backgrounds, or at least large chunks of pattern to help justify my paper stash. Sometimes I'll do a narrow border of a pattern around the edges but then build my layout on white cardstock.

I use mostly white cardstock but have been trying to branch out and use more patterned paper, especially with my Hip Kit Club layouts.

I also use both. Probably more pp than c/s these days. And I still love a kraft background. KikiPea, your l/o is beautiful!

Usually patterned paper. Occasionally I might use cardstock for the base, but I usually just stick with the pp. It's so pretty, and I want to use all of it! LOL! I love the look of pages with the cardstock base though!

About 75% of my recent pages have patterned paper backgrounds, about 25% cardstock, frequently white. I generally buy textured cardstock with the exception of Kraft but I do have a few sheets of smooth purchased when I couldn't find textured at M's or HL.

I'm probably 50/50 solid or patterned for my backgrounds. I love to mix patterns. If the pattern is really busy, I'll usually add an 8x8 or 9x9 piece of solid cardstock to hold my photos.

I use both. Just depends on the photos. I just went to a weekend retreat and looked through my layouts. Half have with solid cardstock backgrounds and half with pattern paper backgrounds. But even with a solid cardstock base I usually use several pattern papers on the layout.

I almost always use pp, but sometimes I’ll cut it down a quarter inch and back it with cardstock. I like the framed look and it gives a little extra stability.

99% of the time I use patterned paper as a background because I incorporate the paper into the page design.
