I belong to a Facebook group that is dedicated to Queen & Company’s products. They regularly post card sketches, and many people post cards based on those sketches. Recently, I posted 4 different Valentine cards for a challenge, each based on a different sketch. However, on more than one, I made significant adaptations, especially with the dies that I used. If you look at the sketch, and my card, you can see that my card is based on the sketch, but altered in a way that there is no mistaking if someone copies my version. And someone did. They changed two colors and added a few tiny hearts, and used a different stamped phrase, but there is no way that it is not an obvious copy of my card. The individual used the specific dies that I had used, which were significantly different from the sketch. They used the additional die I had added. The copy of my card was posted among four other cards the person had made. Usually on this site, the card makers say if they copied or were inspired by another’s card. They don’t always say the name, but they usually at least say if it wasn’t their own design. This individual didn’t, and what they said implied that it was their own creativity.
I don’t plan to say anything, but it seems rather rude not to at least say they copied other people’s cards. Would it bother you?

I'm pretty sure most won't share this opinion but for me personally, this is just not an issue at all. I'd be over the moon flattered if I saw someone copied my card. I realize there are strong feelings about coping and giving/not giving credit but it's not a blip on my radar. I save so many pictures of cards that I can't keep track of who created it or where it came from. Sorry it bothers you that your card was copied without credit but on the positive side, your card was so awesome that someone did copy it!

Sorry it bothers you that your card was copied without credit but on the positive side, your card was so awesome that someone did copy it! Thank you for responding. You bring up a good point, and I am actually flattered. It bothers me because she made it sound as if the designs were hers. And since there were four other cards, I suspect that I won’t be the only one who is a bit miffed. I’m sure the argument can also be made that because I used a sketch, the design wasn’t mine to begin with, even though my adaptation was fairly significant. If I hadn’t listed the sketch, it probably would not have been recognised as based on a sketch, although the sketch designer might have figured it out, even if I hadn’t listed her sketch number. The challenge, however, included using a sketch, and I posted it for the challenge. The gal who copied my card didn’t list any sketch numbers. I’m less annoyed than I was. Your thoughts were helpful, so thanks!

((((Hugs)))) I'm sorry you weren't credited. But how lovely that they liked your card enough to copy it.
I try and remember to credit the sketches or scraplifts I do but I don't always remember where they came from. Not because I'm trying to take credit but because I'm just not quite organised enough.

I guess the passive-aggressive thing would be to comment "I'm so flattered that you were inspired by my card!" on her post so that other people can go take a look at yours if they want to. It's definitely irksome not to be credited, but it's possible she didn't remember who she copied, didn't think she copied it as closely as she did, or isn't aware of the etiquette.

This is why I don't post most of my work online. Unfortunately the only way to guarantee something won't be copied is not to share it. That said I would probably send the person a private note letting them know they should at least credit the original sketch/source of their design, politely at first since they may simply have forgotten or been unaware or as has happened to me, based their work off someone else's who failed to credit. When I do release stuff to the internet it's usually with a CC-BY-NC license. creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/Formalizing what people can do with your work helps avoid and resolve situations like this more easily.

I'm sorry this happened to you scrapnnana. Its really upsetting. I always credit the person or at least say I was inspired by a card I saw somewhere. It doesn't take much to do the right thing. If it really bothers you. You could try to take care of it privately, but than sometimes its more headaches than its worth. And if the person get mean girl on you it will bother you even more. I would let it go this time, but keep on eye on this lady and call her out if she does it again. Just take this as a high compliment and let it go. You know the truth. Hugs

This happened to me on SB.com Someone copied my entire LO. At first I was really annoyed and then the more I thought about it, I didn't care. The fact that she found my original work good enough to to make an exact dupe means she thought it was good. And why am I posting stuff into a gallery if I don't want people to be inspired? I'm not on any design teams, so I have no valid reason to share if it's not for a challenge. Ultimately, I never said anything and decided it really isn't that important to me if someone credits me or not. However, your feelings are valid and you have every right to feel the way you do.

It is the risk we take when we post online.
I may start adding a watermark. And if the design is mine, not from a sketch, I might say something next time IF it happens again.
It’s better than what happened to my sister. She designs unique labyrinths, and she has copyrighted them. She makes them from ceramic for sale. She posted one of her ceramic labyrinths on a board devoted to labyrinths. Someone copied her picture, and posted it as her Facebook profile photo. She wasn’t happy. The person who did it gave no indication on the Facebook page who designed/created it.
