My DD graduates with her master's degree in the UK next January, within a week of my 50th birthday. I had planned to spend my 50th somewhere warm and tropical like Tahiti. Now it looks like I'll need to hop somewhere from England if I want to make it to DD's graduation ceremony because there is no way I can manage two international trips from Texas in one month.
Thoughts? I was looking at Bali, so that might be an option, but I'm sure I'm overlooking destinations that are easier to reach from Europe. Also, we're visiting the Mediterranean this spring so we don't really want to do that again.

Cape Verde? One of the canary islands? Both off the African West coast.
I'm assuming you are looking for a beach destination.

What about somewhere in Portugal? Not sure how warm you want it - but islands off Spain or Greece? Morroco?

I know you said no Mediterranean...but what about Cyprus? Nice short flight from UK and lovely beaches and it's not usually on a Med tour

Thanks y’all. Most of these weren’t on my radar at all so I have a lot of options to look at!

Tenerife and Mauritius were popular destinations of the Belgians.

If you stuck with your original plan of Tahiti, but via the UK, it's a lot less hours in the sky. (But Bali would be a hell of a lot cheaper.) Also, January is the rainy season in Bali, so not an ideal time to go.

Morocco or Tunisia in Northern Africa. Malta is interesting too - Mediterranean, but perhaps not a common as Spain or Italy.

St Lucia. Seemed to be a place a lot of British families go during their school break in October. And you'd be headed more towards home from the UK.

I’m plugging all of these places into google flights from the UK and the U.S. trying to find a happy medium. My weakness for geography is really showing!

I'm in the Canary Islands now. The weather is pretty much perfect IMHO. There are TONS (or should it be TONNES) of tourists from the UK here so, I know you can find package deals or it will be easy to book yourself.
We are on La Palma now and have been to Tenerife, Gran Canaria and La Gomera so far (been here 2 months). There is so much variety in activities, places to stay and things to do.

If you are wanting somewhere warm in January you can pretty much rule out most of Europe - even Cyprus average temp in jan is about 60 degrees F. The Canary Islands will get up to about 68 degrees. The Red Sea area of Egypt will get up to the 70s - warm by our standards. St Lucia is amazing and will be lovely and warm - around mid 80s but with the Tradewinds keeping it from being suffocating.

It's been pretty consistently in the 70s. It was 77 the other day in Los Llanos on La Palma. The only time we wear long pants is when we go up higher than 4000 ft.
