I started scrapbooking when my oldest was born….he is 19. I have 5 or 6 full books of him over the years but honestly didn't get far.i think i over scrapped silly day to day pages and while I love my pages I just didn't get as far along as I wanted. I scrapped in chronological order. Life happened, and I fell further behind. I had a daughter, but she sadly passed away, and after two hard years of grieving I was blessed with a set of twins. Life at time centered around healing and just being together. It was also chaotic and I didn’t scrapbook. I don’t have a book for them even started.
I signed up to go away and scrapbook in 2 weeks. This will be the first time in years, and I have no idea where to start. I feel like my oldest son‘s books aren’t done because I stopped at like his 5th birthday, and I have nothing of the twins when they were babies completed. I do have photos but I don’t want to be overwhelmed by going back 10+ years.
Has anyone ever started over? If you have, where did you start? thanks for any advice!!

I started scrapping with an 8x8 vacation album when my kids were 5 and 9. Was overwhelmed with the idea of going back to the baby days, so I chose a theme of "sports" to get going.
Their first individual albums were just pics of them participating in various sports from about age 3. Included toddler tumbling class, backyard baseball with dad.
Kept up with those, along with family vacation albums, until DD reached high school. I then started a High School themed album which featured first days of school, dances, sports, theater, even birthday and some holiday layouts. They are 8.5x11 albums, many with one pic per page, some elaborate, and some simple.
For me, it was a manageable way to enjoy the craft and capture memories. The cute baby pics are still there for scrapping someday, but maybe never.
So sorry for your loss.

Start with whatever pictures inspire you, the stuff you’re excited to try scrapping and have ideas for layouts. Then you can fill in the gaps when you’re back in the groove.

I would even start with more recent photos without thinking about putting them in books at this time. It's ok to have a pile of layouts just to look at.

Disclaimer: I have no kids. I am scrapbooking my life.
I haven't started over. I am years behind though. I fully intend to get somewhat caught up someday. For me, my scrapbooking productivity ebbs and flows. I do it for awhile, then I don't touch it for months. I have other things that I do as well (self care, reading, mixed media style journal).
My philosophy is it will get done, when it gets done. There are no time parameters of when it need to be complete.
My advice for you is..... just do one page at a time. Work on it when you want to and when you have time.

Good for you, getting back into scrapbooking, leslie132 ! My advice is to start with what feels right to YOU. What memories stand out the most? What stories do you want to tell? What papers--and other supplies--do you want to play with? If "catching up" feels like a chore, then do something totally random and FUN! If you want to feel there is some order, start with the most recent and work backward. If it would feel good to get the overview of everything, create a highlights album: a few pages about sports teams or other interests, best friends through the years, Personality traits: how their personalities changed--and stayed the same as they grew up, milestones like graduations, first drivers licence... Either way, you can go back in later and add more detailed pages of specific events. As to planning for this event, why not ask the kids what THEY would like to see scrapbooked? Print the pic's for those stories, collect some supplies to go with them, and pack your bags!
That being said, I know a scrapbooker who got back into it by purposefully scrapping things that were NOT important to her--just a bunch of photos from a vacation years ago. It took the pressure off completely and the only supplies she needed to pack were themed for the location of the trip. The event made it fun for her again, and then she tackled the more important stories that she felt the need to make really special pages for.

Welcome back!
Personally I only did individual albums for the first year and most everything else is in a family album (I do smaller Boy Scout/Girl Scout albums individually as well). I sort my layouts chronologically but don't scrap that way.
I would pick some photos that you want to scrap - perhaps something cohesive theme-wise if you think you'll prefer themed supplies (to limit what you need to pack/buy) or if you have some supplies you're excited to use - grab some photos that will work well with those supplies. Or do you have some memories you want to focus on? Are there photos that would go with those?
There's no one right way to do it - however YOU scrapbook will be the right way for you at this time and you can always change things up in the future.

I’d probably begin with something recent like a vacation that you enjoyed at this getaway. Over time od begin choosing the pictures you want to do for your kids.
I’ve been scrapping since before kids so by the time I had kids I was excited to get into their albums. My oldest has 2 albums just covering his first year the second almost the same, the third….well my third fourth and fifth don’t have their own books. I decided I’d take the books I created for my first two and make them family albums because that’s really what they were. Then I’m starting on books for the kids. Each kid is getting one book through high school. It’ll be highlights- I have a page with my pregnancy, a page of their newborn pictures, a double spread of a monthly pic from their first year. There will be a highlight double spread of milestones, a double spread of first day of school pictures, etc. more like their life through the years with highlight and then their personal accomplishments. Maybe a double page spread per year? I haven’t decided as I’m just getting going. Since I’m still an established scrapper I’m also doing our family albums alongside this project with the daily things. I prefer Project life style for this. If they want more details of things they can look at those and then have their own album of important stuff to take when they leave home.

Welcome back to scrapbooking! My advice is to scrapbook pictures that make you happy and bring up positive memories. It’s a hobby. It’s supposed to be fun. Try to relax and enjoy it and also keep in mind that you don’t have to do it. Nothing bad will happen if you don’t scrapbook. Keeping that in mind can take the pressure off that we can put on ourselves. Also, keep in mind that you don’t have to go back to scrapbooking every detail. Unless you want to. But if not, you can do month in review type layouts or even year in review, school year in review, summer in review. But to answer your question, I did stop scrapping for a few years. When I started scrapping again I picked up where I left off and continued to scrapbook chronologically. That’s what works for me.

Starting from the births of your younger children sounds too overwhelming. Start with something relatively recent that gave you happy and delightful memories. I started scrapbooking when I had 5 kids, and the youngest was three. I will never be completely caught up, but I have some great memories showcased in the pages and albums that I have done.

I would use technology to help you. If all your photos are in icloud, amazon or google, you can search by face or keyword. Search for pictures you might want and make an album (a digital collection of photos) for later. Some ideas are family photos (search all of your names), Halloween, first day of school, sport kid's name. You could also add the year to limit how many photos are in a search. This is a video by Miss Freddy showing the keywords she used to make a Halloween album: www.instagram.com/reel/Cjs73wcjNvC/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==Maybe looking at your photos in chunks will give an idea of what is important to you.

Personally, I'd start with photos that excite you. Forget the pressure of being caught up. Have fun!
When I go to retreats, I usually take 3 or 4 themes. For example, a vacation, a birthday, and Christmas. That way I only take supplies related to those themes. When I get bored doing Christmas or lose my mojo, I move to another set of photos.
I hope you have a great time!

Thank you everyone. Sometimes all it takes is a little advice or best tips from others to get things clicking.
First off I knew I needed to get organized. So this morning I sat down with all of my page collections and figured out which ones I wanted to scrap. I have 25-two page layouts planned, which I don’t see finishing over the two days but it gives me a place of reference. I won’t start another area until I get all those 25 pages completed. Those pages predominantly are 2022 and 2023. I’m throwing in a couple pages for my twins at birth.
Overall the take away from this conversation is to have fun and not be overwhelmed. For me that means I’m going to work in current times and work backwards in between. So once I get those 25 pages done, I will either find more pages to do for 2022 and 2023 or I will move back to 2020 and 2021. All while staying current with 2024 events. I love my books and I love having an outlet for creating so Im happy to be starting up again.
I went to my favorite scrapbook store, which is so big and has so much to offer….. and grabbed up way too much paper. That is my guilty pleasure. Now I have to print photos, buy my tape runners and I will be good to go! Thank you for all the advice I really appreciate it!!!

Have fun at your crop! It's a great way to just get back in touch with your hobby and have fun. One thing I'd add for a future project idea is something like Ali's Halloween Through the Years album. You could use this approach for birthdays or vacations or other holidays too. Just 1-5 photos and a journal box for each year plus some fun product. It could be both a creative project and help you feel like you have older photos scrapped without being overwhelmed.

Love this.^^ The tone between your first post to this one is night/day...the peas have such awesome advice/encouragement! You sound excited to start where you are and have fun with a hobby. I am a big "scrap what I want" proponent and don't worry about being caught up or what I think I should have done. It's not about the end product as much as the process for me. For when/if you do want to go back a bit, I like the idea of batching. Like putting a few years of the same type of photo together on 1 layout. One year I did a layout for my nephew that had the 1st day and last day of school photos that year. It was a great way to cover a large amount of time, a whole grade, and show progress. The journaling or notes can fill in gaps. Lately I am also more of a fan of journaling/making notes on the back of pages to reduce the time it would take to make it part of the layout. Have so much fun & enjoy your crop!

I have to share that I had the best 2 days!!! Nothing felt better than getting my hands on paper, tape and some ink!
What I love best is how everyone has their idea of a perfect style or page. So many woman sitting together (around 60) just chatting, scrapping and enjoying the memories.
I got 36 pages done. I was hustling. From all the advice, and from the feeling I got when I started I think it will be best (or most enjoyable) to stay current with 2024, and to work backwards with making 1 album to cover each year. I’m in 2023 currently and super happy with the progress!
