I’m not a fan of the thicker bags. I got a lot during Covid as I did curbside and they were free but they used a lot. Then they started charging for them again and gave the option to use your own and I do that. We will reuse sone but others went to line bathroom trash cans. I am starting to run low in them. These bags are probably 5 times the thickness or more than the thin ones. With so many doing curbside or home delivery I would bet this is the real reason the pounds per person is going up. Even if 75% of the population uses their own bags the ones that aren’t are getting these heavier bags and stores seem to only put a few items per bag. So even with less bags the weight is more. I don’t know why anyone thought this would cut down on plastic. I think they thought charging would make people reuse them. And yes Covid deliveries cause a lot of unnecessary plastic waste. I had piles but donated them to a local food bank for them to use.

People on assistance don’t have to pay for them either. It always amazes me when I see people using so many of these bags and not using their own or not just putting their items in totes in their cars. I understand occasionally forgetting but obviously a lot just don’t care about the added cost.

I ordered something online from Target once, for in-store pickup. I selected "no bag". I went to get my one small item, and it was in a reusable bag. I tried to return the bag, and get my $0.10 back, but it wasn't worth the hassle. It is a way to get more money out of us.

So people are not reusing the thicker plastic bags. Plastic waste per pound has increases. I mean they are heavier and bigger. I honestly thought they should have mo ed to reusable or paper. I get paper bags at Stater Bros when I do curbside. And I save them. I get the thick plastic here and there for when I buy raw packaged meats. I use them awhile, then recycle and get new ones. Sometimes those packages leak and I don't want the juices in my nice reusable bags. We have been using reusable bags for about 16-17 years. I had the same concerns about “meat juices,” and I found these bags that are washable. I love them! www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B08BYKJLWN?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

I didn’t have a car in CA, and here in Seattle, I do a lot of my grocery shopping on my walk home from barre class or the walk from the bus I take from work (the big stuff I get at Costco and they give boxes). Yes, I could carry tote bags with me, but I don’t always remember or have room, and I think people organize their days, lives, and stuff differently if they drive everywhere than if they walk everywhere, walk a lot, or take public transit. If I were more car-focused, I would keep a stock of totes in my trunk more often, I am sure.

Sometimes I get a bag so I can use it as a car trash bag on a long road trip, so it is getting reused. My hunch is that's not usually why someone takes a bag. Not everyone does everything in a car. I didn’t have a car in CA, and here in Seattle, I do a lot of my grocery shopping on my walk home from barre class or the walk from the bus I take from work (the big stuff I get at Costco and they give boxes). I lived overseas where I didn't drive and my daily life meant a.) walking or taking public transit everywhere, b. paying for bags because they care about plastic, and c.) having bags with me at all times. I bought bags that fold up really small so I can even fit one in a clutch bag. I have some in my bag all the time. I usually carried a tote style purse so I didn't even need a bag.

Honestly…I just cannot even imagine not using reusable bags. I have so many. There is always a stash in my car. I am FAR from perfect, but that seems like one of the easiest and most basic things you can do to reduce the amount of plastic you use.

It doesn't surprise me there is an increase in the weight of the total plastic. Anyone who orders home delivery gets their groceries in plastic bags and I swear they put the minimum number of items in each bag. At least 50% of the people I see at the store coming out are using plastic bags. At my husband's work, they order snacks and drinks delivered and they come in many many bags. He often brings a few extra home. I will get a free bag of bags off of Next Door in the spring and use them to give away extra veg from our garden. I only used reuseables when shopping and bring one plastic bag for meat in case it leaks. I'll buy paper every so often and use them for kitchen trash. This is my biggest complaint with the plastic bags, they hold almost nothing so you end up with three times as many as if your stuff was all packed in a single paper bag. And then if you have anything in the plastic bag that will remotely roll around, those stupid bags don’t keep anything contained in my trunk. Every time a cashier at Target or somewhere asks me paper or plastic I always request paper. I reuse them to corral my recycling because even though we have single sort cans, I feel like it keeps things from blowing out on recycling day when the cans are dumped. I have a pile of the nonwoven “cloth” bags that never make it into my car, two insulated Costco bags that never leave my car and a couple 31 totes that should be in my trunk but right now aren’t. Oh, and one fold up nylon bag in my purse for those rando infrequent Aldi runs.

Plastic bags need to be banned but it's illegal in our state for any local jurisdiction to ban plastic or polystyrene. Makes me crazy! We see them in the water at the beach and in the waterways and marine animals die from ingesting them but our legislators have made it impossible to ban plastic.I get so annoyed when I go to a store and see someone put one small item, like a candy bar or a greeting card, in a plastic bag. You can't carry it out of the store in your hand? I agree with the red. BUT I am the person who will get a bag (if it's free) for one item because I take the bag home and use it again for a trash bag or cat box bag or passing stuff along to others bag. If they had paper bags, I'd use them instead.

If they had paper bags, I'd use them instead. Me too! Some stores I am not sure about. They'll ask if I want a bag, I'll ask are they free, and if they say Yes, then I say Yes. I don't know what the rules are, but some stores give you bags and others don't. Maybe it is the food thing. I know Home Depot gives you bags for free, yet Macy's does not. No food involved with either of those stores. Confused!
