The DC mayor does not have the authority to deploy National Guard troops. And there is no official record of Trump's request. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/01/04/jan-6-committee-yet-again-debunks-trump-claim-10000-troops/Trump and his defenders have repeatedly claimed that the violence at the Capitol two years ago would have been prevented if only his order for 10,000 troops had been heeded. We have explored this claim twice before and debunked it, each time awarding Four Pinocchios.
But now the Jan. 6 committee has released its report and dozens of transcribed interviews that provide new details on the meetings in which Trump claims he requested troops at the Capitol.
Trump, in his post, says he made a “recommendation for troops” and that then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) failed to act on it. But the evidence shows Trump did not issue any formal request — so there was nothing for Pelosi to heed. The committee report says it found “no evidence” to support the claim that he ordered 10,000 troops.
The report says that Trump brought up the issue on at least three occasions but in such vague and obtuse ways that no senior official regarded his words as an order. Here’s what we know now about his statements at the time:
“Never once did I hear the president relative to the 6th specify the number of troops, 10,000 or any other number, for that matter,” said Gen. Mark A. Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who also attended the meeting.
In 2021, Trump’s former chief of staff Mark Meadows told Fox News that “as many as 10,000 National Guard troops were told to be on the ready by the secretary of defense. That was a direct order from President Trump.” But Miller told investigators that statement was false, adding, “I was surprised by seeing that publicly.” (Meadows did not agree to be interviewed by the Jan. 6 Committee.)

Trump didn't even have the authority to request that many National Guard troops. Also, Liz Cheney did not delete anything. Trump and his lawyers actually have the "missing" documents. eta - Sorry, onelasttime already posted this article. But here's a gift link and I included just the parts that refute Trump's false claims wapo.st/3VJg1xUwww.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/01/03/trump-says-liz-cheney-deleted-evidence-jan-6-troops-there-isnt-any/ But here’s the kicker: The special counsel who is prosecuting Trump for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election — although not for the Capitol insurrection itself — says the withheld materials have already been provided to Trump as part of discovery in the case.
“The Court finds that Mr. Patel was not a credible witness,” Wallace wrote. “His testimony regarding Trump authorizing 10,000-20,000 National Guardsmen is not only illogical (because Trump only had authority over about 2,000 National Guardsmen) but completely devoid of any evidence in the record.”
In a footnote, she elaborated: “Trump, as commander of the D.C. National Guard, only had direct authority over around 2,000 Guardsmen. To mobilize 10,000-20,000 Guardsmen, he would have had to contact the Governors of other States and they would have had to then give orders, or he would have had to federalize the Guardsmen from those States. In either case, there would have been significant official action taken. No record of such action was produced at the Hearing.”
Cheney, in a tweet Tuesday, dismissed Trump’s claims, telling the former president “you and your lawyers have had the J6 cmttee materials (linked below) plus the grand jury info & much more for months. Lying about the evidence in all caps won’t change the facts. A public trial will show it all.”
Despite this fact check, we are resigned to the fact that we’ll spend the next 10 months listening to Trump falsely claiming he offered 10,000 troops — and that members of the committee like Cheney destroyed evidence that would exonerate him. But be forewarned — neither claim is true, no matter how often Trump says it is.

The claim about missing documents is an attempt by Trump to delay the trial. In November, the judge denied his request to subpoena members of the committee regrading the allegedly missing documents. The R House Oversight committee report is an attempt to muddy the waters, discredit the initial investigation and clear Trump before November. thehill.com/homenews/campaign/4539536-liz-cheney-fires-back-trump-jan-6/Lying in all caps doesn’t make it true, Donald. You know you and your lawyers have long had the evidence,” Cheney wrote Sunday in a post on X, formerly Twitter. In a second post on Sunday, Cheney said Trump new his claims were “lies.”
“You have had all the grand jury & J6 transcripts for many months. You’re trying to halt your 1/6 trial because your VP, WH counsel, WH aides, campaign & DOJ officials etc. will testify against you. You’re afraid of the truth and you should be.”
The back-and-forth over Jan. 6 evidence follows House Republicans’ new report on the Capitol attack, released last week in an attempt to discredit Congress’s initial investigation and clear Trump of any wrongdoing ahead of November’s election.

This seems really timely. The NYT evaluated Trump's lies for an entire week in January. He lies so frequently and he consistently lies about certain things. Here are just a couple of his lies from the article. Gift article - no paywall www.nytimes.com/interactive/2024/04/08/us/politics/trump-speech-mistruths.html?unlocked_article_code=1.i00.Scdj.zR743C3uz43r&smid=url-shareThe Method Behind Trump’s Mistruths A close examination of every public word from the former president during a crucial week of his campaign. Since the beginning of his political career, Donald J. Trump has misled, mischaracterized, dissembled, exaggerated and, at times, flatly lied. His flawed statements about the border, the economy, the coronavirus pandemic and the 2020 election have formed the bedrock of his 2024 campaign.
Though his penchant for bending the truth, sometimes to the breaking point, has been well documented, a close study of how he does so reveals a kind of technique to his dishonesty: a set of recurring rhetorical moves with which Mr. Trump fuels his popularity among his supporters.
In the week starting with Mr. Trump’s victory speech in Iowa through his win in the New Hampshire primary — the contests that put him on the path to becoming his party’s nominee for the third consecutive time — The New York Times analyzed all of his public statements, including speeches, interviews and social media posts.
His words focused heavily on attacking his political rivals, self-aggrandizing and stoking fear to make his case for 2024. In doing so, Mr. Trump often relied on repeated falsehoods and half-truths. He has yet to deviate from this approach in the general election.
Here’s a look at how he does it.
He grossly distorts his opponents’ records and proposals to make them sound unreasonable.
ATKINSON, N.H., RALLY, JAN. 16, 2024 While Joe Biden is pushing the largest tax hike in American history – you know, he wants to quadruple your taxes.
President Biden has not proposed quadrupling taxes. In fact, he has consistently vowed not to raise taxes on anyone earning less than $400,000.
He exaggerates and twists the facts to make his record sound better than it is.
NEWSMAX INTERVIEW, JAN. 21, 2024 And think of it, for four years we had no terror problem.
There were in fact terrorist attacks in the United States during the Trump administration. In 2017, to name one, a native of Uzbekistan plowed a pickup truck down a bike path in Manhattan, killing eight people. The Justice Department said the driver, Sayfullo Saipov, carried out the terrorist attack in the name of ISIS.
He relies on both well-worn and fresh claims of election rigging to suggest he can lose only if his opponents cheat.
He has turned his criminal cases into a rallying cry, baselessly asserting that he is being persecuted by his successor.
FOX INTERVIEW WITH BRET BAIER, JAN. 20, 2024 These are all Biden indictments.
Mr. Trump has not offered any evidence for his contention that Mr. Biden has orchestrated the criminal charges against him. Two of his four cases were brought at the state level. At the federal level, Mr. Trump’s criminal charges — in relation to his effort to remain in power after losing the 2020 election and, separately, over his retention of classified documents after leaving office — are handled by a special counsel and were put before grand juries.
He makes unverifiable claims about what the world would have been like had he secured a second term.
He describes the United States as a nation in ruins.

Republicans know their policies are unpopular. They're refusing to moderate them and instead choosing to suppress votes to try to win. Republicans Unable to attract the support of a majority of eligible voters, Republicans are left to try to rig the voting rules and exploit election loopholes. Put simply, Republicans need to make it harder to vote and easier to cheat. www.democracydocket.com/opinion/republicans-want-to-make-it-harder-to-vote-and-easier-to-cheat/Republicans have a math problem, and they know it. Share on Twitter Republicans have a math problem, and they know it. Regardless of their candidate, it is nearly certain that more people will vote to reelect President Joe Biden than his GOP opponent.
In 2008, former President Barack Obama received more than 9.5 million more votes than then-U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). In 2012, he bested Mitt Romney by nearly five million votes. Former President Donald Trump lost the popular vote by 2.8 million in 2016 and by seven million in 2020.
Unable to attract the support of a majority of eligible voters, Republicans are left to try to rig the voting rules and exploit election loopholes. Put simply, to ensure their electoral survival, Republicans need to make it harder to vote and easier to cheat.
Their plan is simple and dangerous. First, Republicans want to make voting as difficult as possible for minority and young voters. Second, the GOP seeks to bolster the election denier movement to undermine the accurate counting and certification of election results.
Left unchecked, we will face a 2024 election where eligible voters are turned away and lawful votes are left uncounted. Results will be set aside by partisan certification boards. Trump and his allies first tried — and failed — to achieve this result through litigation brought across the country after the 2020 election. They now aim to achieve the same goals preemptively, through restrictive voting rules and election processes designed to allow the will of the people to be subverted.

Regardless of what Trump says about ordering troops, the fact remains that additional security was needed because of him and his supporters. Not the Democrats. And the fact remains that he sat on his hands and watched the violence unfold for three hours before tweeting to send everyone home. Why would he feel he had the ability to send anyone home? Why did the people in the capitol obey him? Because they were clearly there doing his bidding. Everything else is just smoke and mirrors. ETA: Everyone surrounding Trump knew he had to be the one to call it off, as numerous insider texts show. It’s ridiculous to sit here and prevaricate about troops and Pelosi and whatever. Just utter nonsense. He instigated it and supported it, and hell no did he want any troops there to stop it. amp.cnn.com/cnn/2022/06/02/politics/read-mark-meadows-texts-january-6-capitol-riot

He railed against downplaying the insurrection and specifically condemned the effort to elevate convicted criminals to the status of “hostages.”
I have been shocked to watch some public figures try to rewrite history, claiming rioters behaved “in an orderly fashion” like ordinary tourists, or martyrizing convicted January 6 defendants as “political prisoners” or even, incredibly, “hostages.” … “Protestors” would have simply shared their views on the election — as did thousands that day who did not approach the Capitol. But those who breached and occupied the Capitol building and grounds halted the counting of the electoral college votes required by the Twelfth Amendment.
He continued, “This was not a protest that got out of hand. It was a riot; in many respects a coordinated riot, as is clear from cases before me. … Although the rioters failed in their ultimate goal, their actions nonetheless resulted in the deaths of multiple people, injury to over 140 members of law enforcement, and lasting trauma for our entire nation.” He concluded, “This was not patriotism; it was the antithesis of patriotism.”
Trump has not only reimagined Jan. 6 as a glorious event but promised to pardon those involved.

Taking a step back, it should still sicken Americans that someone running for chief executive continues to embrace lawbreaking and promises to reward it. The job Trump seeks requires an oath to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” In embracing constitutional terrorists, Trump signals he cannot comply with the oath.
voters can certainly decide that a candidate who incites, glorifies and promises to free insurrectionists cannot fulfill the duties of president.
Through mass gaslighting, the MAGA Republican Party stands poised to nominate the architect of an attempted coup. That alone besmirches our democracy. Actually electing such a character president, however, would irretrievably mar our constitutional system. Because spineless Republicans in the Senate refused to convict him at his second impeachment trial and bar him from office, the American voters must now do what they did not: protect our democracy from the scourge of Trump and Trumpism. To do otherwise would be to side with monstrous liars ready to throw the Constitution overboard.

Also, I don't think laptop turned out to be the smoking gun that the Republicans were hoping it would be. Except for nude pictures to show to embarrass Hunter, I don't think they found any solid or incriminating evidence. The story also really never made sense. As Hunter said in his testimony, why would you bring a MacBook to an Independent repair shop and not the Apple Store that was closer? Maybe Giuliani and the repair guy somehow hacked into Hunter's iCloud account? And somewhere along the way Giuliani or someone else tampered with the data and information. Republicans are really mad about the letter written by former intelligence officials. However, the arrest of Smirnov confirms what the officials warned could happen - Russian agents were trying to interfere in the investigation into Hunter Biden and influence the 2020 election.

Why do you think Lev Parnas changed his story and now says that Republicans were collusion with Russia to spread misinformation? The media isn’t saying that. He testified to it in front of the house. It wouldn’t matter, except that your cult is determined to move this country towards religious authoritarianism. And that’s not OK. (You don't need to take it from me or any media source - take it from the large group of Trump's closest advisors in his previous administration who refuse to endorse him now and are speaking out about the threat he poses to democracy. apnews.com/article/former-trump-officials-criticize-2024-e202861911ab37cadfcf058b5b163fb9 ) That you dismiss Tony Bobulinski, a decorated officer in the Navy that served honorably, but invoke a man covicted of fraud and making false statements as your "proof", says. It. All. You’re hilarious. On whose behalf was Parnas making the false statements? The ones he went to prison for. Bobulinski never was able to present any evidence for his claims. He’s lying on Trump’s behalf, too. If you think a former military officer isn’t capable of lying, I assume you also believe everything that Gen. Mattis has to say about Trump’s danger to this country. Right? Right? ETA: Bobulinski’s business record is hardly squeaky clean and he has strong ties to the Trump campaign. Trying to paint him as some upright whistleblower who came forward with Trump’s lawyers just days before the 2020 election is ridiculous. newrepublic.com/article/178960/republican-witness-hunter-biden-impeachment-tony-bobulinski-past

You really do need to keep up. They haven’t been lying at all. I realize it’s difficult to accept your dearly held beliefs crumbling all around you, but that’s facts right now. Russia, in concert with Republicans loyal to Trump, propagated the Hunter Biden smear campaign. Russia has been attempting to manipulate our political system through the Republican Party for some time now and, in reading your posts, it’s clear they’ve been successful. Trump lied about a stolen election to incite his followers to insurrection, and they followed through with an attempt to overthrow our government and kill certain elected leaders. Trump supported that and calls them “patriots” to this day. These are facts. You’re going to have to come to terms with them. Your news sources and your Democrats lied to you then, and they're lying to you now. Spoken like a good little cult member. My eyes and ears don't lie.

Who gave the laptop to the repair store owner? What did Rudy have to do with it? Did it turn out there was any actual incriminating information on it? Your sources have been lying to you for a long time, and they still are. But there’s no getting through to a Trump cultist. It. All. Where is your “decorated officer’s” written proof of what he claims? Bank statements shows that there was x number of dollars but one has to be able to provide verifiable proof of any wrongdoing in obtaining that money. Like verifiable proof that President Biden was in the “influence peddling” business to benefit members of his family. So where is it? To quote the famous Wendy’s commercial “Where’s the beef?”
