I have avoided the temptation to purchase a hot foil press (Gemini, Glimmer, Fuse, Minc) for the four years they have been on the market. But a recent Jennifer McGuire video has peaked my interest . . . and the BetterPress as well. The look is really beautiful.
How many of you have regularly used your hot foil systems and think they are worth the $$$.
How many of you have used the BetterPress with regular die cut plates?
For what it is worth I do have both the Gemini electric die cutting machine and the Platinum. First the Platinum, but decided that the wrists needed a bit of help so splurged on the Gemini. Glad I did.
BTW I did go back and look at the threads here from 2 and 4 years ago. I've also watched a few comparison videos.
What say peas? Will you talk me off the edge? Or will you be an enabler?

I think the look is lovely but not something I would use on scrapbook pages - just on cards personally. And I thought about how many cards I would actually MAKE using it and my personal history of not jumping in with two feet with new techniques...and decided it wouldn't be worth the investment for ME. My budget isn't unlimited - it's fairly small - so that factors in for me. If I was used to spending more, I might not have hesitated as much.
I think you need to consider how much you would use and how much on-going expense it will be for you and whether that's worthwhile.

I have the Gemini Foil press and use it quite a bit. Most of last year's Christmas cards were foiled and many of this year's cards will be as well. Here is what I will tell you about it. The Gemini Foil Press gives near perfect results every single time if you follow the instructions in the book AND (most important) you use ONLY Gemini PAPER foil. The Gemini foil comes in two types so you definitely want the paper foil and it only comes in limited colors unlike the Glimmer which has a frillion options. You absolutely can use Glimmer foil in the Gemini, but it only works at a higher heat level and excessive use at higher temps can cause your plate to warp over time resulting in bad foiling and needing to replace the plate which isn't inexpensive. While I do have all the colors of Gemini foil available, I find I mainly reach for gold, silver, and rose gold so I don't find myself needing all the colors the Glimmer has to offer.

I also have the Gemini Foil Press & I echo what lokismom said. I find that I mostly use it for Christmas/Holiday cards and not so much for everyday cards. I haven't bought the Better Press yet and am trying to resist it...LOL! My friend is looking into getting one so I think I'll wait & see how she likes it before I decide.

This is a really interesting discussion to me. I have been resisting foiling and whenever I start to feel tempted, I think about storing foils and my resolve strengthens. I love the idea of a foil system with limited colors! Sadly (or is it?), I don't have a Gemini. Perhaps I will keep this in mind if I ever decide I'm old enough for a motorized die cutter.

I found a Glimmer system at our crafty resale store for $50 and bought it on a whim. I had not had any intentions of dabbling in foil or Betterpress.
My opinion: I LOVE it. Like, I would go back and buy it at full price, knowing what I know now. I am extremely surprised at how much I like it.
I have used several regular dies in it, from shapes to background plates. Most do great. Always test first. Some with more open areas do not do as well, and get foil in the middle of the image, but I have had really good success with doing this. I will say the lines from doing this are thinner than the foil plates.
I have a few foil plates now, and all have worked beautifully. I ordered an Altenew bundle that came with a Press Plate and HOLY MOLY that thing does amazing in the Glimmer. Better that the foil plates, IMO. And I bought black foil and love it. In fact, I prefer it to the metallic. The images I have gotten from the black are so crisp and clean that I may not ever buy another stamp again, and just buy whatever images I can get on the press plates to use.
I have played around with a silicone mat in it and get a letterpress look that is pretty good. Not as crisp as the BP system, but I thought it looked good.

OP, are you pretty good at using the tools you have? If you'll use it, get it. I have a small Mini and just don't use it. I need to get it out and use up the stuff I have.

I have the foil press and the mini minc and I love them both. Although truth be told, I love my minc more! The new GinaK Fuse is exactly like the minc, only the outside is different and from what I've heard it is at a much better price!
I have not been lured to the BetterPress, it just doesn't appeal to me.
If you do choose the Foil Press (hot foil) or the Minc, Fuse (toner foil) go check out the Foiling Snobs Club on youtube. We aren't snobs and Nancy (the creator) has a lot of wonderful info comparing machines.

I just got the better press & the glimmer for the holidays. I love my better press it is so easy to use.
I haven’t tried my glimmer yet but it’s on my agenda this weekend. I had a class for the better press so I was comfortable using it. Whilst I have used a glimmer before in a class at my local store, it’s been a few years and I want to brush up on it before I screw cut up & foil my plate or something dumb like that. It would be like me.

I’d never much liked the look of foil but after a little research I changed my mind. Back in October I was all set to take a mini vacation and spend 3 days at the scrapbook expo near me. But I got Covid and couldn’t go. I decided to use the vacation money to buy something and decided on the Glimmer. Good choice since I really like it. I bought some background design plates which are good on cards. I also have some flowers plates and sentiments and I’ve used them on layouts.

I ended up recently getting both of these. I LOVE the Betterpress- use it with regular paper and ink- love the results and look. I like the Glimmer, but on reflection would not purchase it again. The results are pretty, but I find it fiddly to use, the results are never perfect and I don’t love the plates as much. However, they do work well on the Betterpress! I would recommend deciding how much you love the look of the projects and then try the machine that has the ones you love best.

Also, you can get the foil off with acetone - just make sure it's all evaporated off before you heat them again. I just can't be bothered when they still work fine.

Try some of your BetterPress plates on the Glimmer - the plates are much more detailed and are really pretty when foiled.

Ok, I am part magpie, I love shiny things - I have a Minc, the Glimmer system, and Betterpress too. They all have a place in my card making & scrapbooking.
I work full-time, so I only get to use them when I set aside time to craft. If I had more time, I would certainly use them more.
I love the effect of the Glimmer system, and I've been searching through some of my older Spellbinders dies to try with it as well - you can use them to foil, check your instructions.
I got the Betterpress for Christmas and haven't had the opportunity to play much with it, but I'm off these next few days and that's at the top of my list! I recall Jennifer McGuire saying Spellbinders had put a lot of thought into it and that it was going to be around for a long time. I'm excited to see what comes down the road for it.
One more Betterpress aside - I found out yesterday that in addition to the club on the Spellbinders website, they have a club exclusively through local retailers. I think it's a test program, it's called Betterpress Society. Anyway, the February die was beautiful, a cover plate of butterflies, a lot more interesting to me than the website club.

Oh, I saw that plate and spent a goodly amount of time finding a shop that had one available that was willing to ship it. It just got here today. I can't wait to get home from work to try it out. I was able to get the stencil add-on as well. No local shop to get it from directly.

I got the glimmer hot press last year and I love it. I used it for my Christmas cards. I have mostly backgrounds that I use for 3x4 cards and have used a couple of other scrapbooking times. I bought an alphabet during a big Spellbinders sale.
I have no plans to get into better press. A store owner did say you can use better press plates with the foil system so I may pick up a plate here or there.
I have struggled with using the negative leftovers of the foiling. I don't think I'm letting my plate get hot enough maybe? But I also prefer the look of the embossed foil anyway vs the flat look.

I've been stamping since about 1990 and scrapbooking since 1998 or so. Yes, I love my tools all the way back to the original circle cutter and oval cutter in the late 90's, plus dozen of corner punches and decorative scissors. Many tools I've owned over the years have been replaced by better versions. I do use my tools and usually haven't meet one that doesn't get use. One exception the Basic Grey Notch cutting tool has had very few uses but has come in handy a few times. Fasinator, tag maker, WeR tools . . . die cutting machines. I find that each one has a particular use that they shine. Gemini for good crisp consistent die cuts, even my little Cuttlebug is best for embossing folders. I will admit the Platinum was quickly replaced by the Gemini, but only because of aforementioned wrist issues. I have worn out my first Cuttlebug, and broke my first Spellbinders machine. I like rotary style trimmers and have worn out more than a dozen of the Cutterpeds. Love my Creative Memories Rotary cutter with multiple blades.
With that said, I will be waiting and watching for sales on the BetterPress and probably the Gemini Hot Foil. I watched a video on how to use your wafer thin dies to get a thicker line for hot foiling. May also work on the BetterPress. I do have a ton of wafer thin dies to play with!

I have a Glimmer, Betterpress, and Minc. I wish I had more time to use them because the results are beautiful.
Glimmer: The machine has a bit of a learning curve. Using a specific type of paper like Hammermill 100lb yields the best results. There's a bit of trial and error involved but I highly recommend Jennifer McGuire's video and Spellbinders videos. Once you get used to it, it's easy to use. It's a bit time consuming waiting for the machine to heat up, etc. But I understand it's not for everyone.
Betterpress: This is so easy to use right out of the box. But sometimes I like the look and sometimes I don't. I actually prefer using the betterpress plates to hot foil. Only complaint, wish there was an easier way to ink everything all up.
Is it worth it? It is for me. However, I don't use mine nearly as I would like to. Sometimes heat embossing creates a similar look and feel and I reach for that because it's easier. And you also have invest in a lot of plates, which can get pricey, and foils.

Someone in comments suggested parchment paper. I tried that and it works really good!

Home from an extended road trip to finish the moving. BetterPress is waiting to be tested, along with a few plates (ahem) that will keep me going for a few projects form Altenew. Now, to find more masculine background plates for the Better Press. Waiting on the Gemini hot foil, but watching a few videos. Oh, I found the butterfly cover plate from the Better Press Society through retailers. My Oregon connection is not requiring a 6 month commitment, figures she will sell them anyway--online store. Turns out I didn't like the March version anyway. Too many add-ons to really use it well, sentiment in the middle with florals around. Didn't want to use the same sentiment for the price.
