I think for a while, many of us recognized that not all Republicans were Trump supporters, there was some space and distance. Regrettably, Trump has so completely taken over the Republican party, and the party has shifted really far to the right. Very few Republican politicians have said they will not vote for Trump (Christie, Murkowski, Collins, Romney, Cheney & KInzinger). Along with McConnell stepping down, 23 moderate Republicans in the House are not running for re-election. Unfortunately, the Republican Party has become the MAGA party. I wish things were different. Our democracy depends on 2 functioning parties and the Republican Party is anything but functional today. I thought this was interesting about Trump voters in the primaries www.washingtonpost.com/politics/interactive/2024/trump-voters-demographics-shift/?itid=hp-top-table-main_p001_f004Voters 65 or older were the age group most likely to support Trump in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. They made up more than a third of his voters, increasing from a quarter eight years ago.
His voters are also much more conservative. Fifty-two percent of them identified as “very conservative,” a jump of more than 20 points since 2016.
But Republican women have stayed with Trump. They made up 46 percent of his base in the first three primary states, a slight increase over 2016.
White evangelical Christians also continued to flock to him, making up a majority of his supporters in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.
Finally, Trump’s support in the suburbs was also undiminished, at about 14 percent in the relatively rural early primary states.
The Washington Post analyzed exit polling from Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina and compared it to the same data from 2016 to get an idea of how Trump’s voters have shifted since his first presidential run. It paints a picture of a base that’s more homogenous than the one that backed him as the GOP nominee eight years ago. Trump’s increasingly extreme positions and rhetoric have clearly alienated more moderate voting blocs while attracting voters from the party’s right flank and allowing him to maintain support in other key groups.
While none of that has hindered Trump in the primaries — he won the first three by double digits — it could create liabilities for him in the general election. It could also speak to some advantages he has over President Biden. Here’s a look at how Trump’s base has changed.
One of the most pronounced shifts is in the age of Trump’s base. Voters 65 and over made up a minority of his base in 2016. This year, they’re the largest group in terms of age.
Young Republicans have turned from him. Voters under 50 accounted for 37 percent of his base at this point in the 2016 campaign; now, they make up less than 29 percent. His share of middle-aged voters is also down, falling from nearly 40 percent to about 35 percent.
Older Americans vote at higher levels than other age groups, so Trump benefits by performing well with them. But he’ll struggle to defeat President Biden in November without peeling off some younger voters, who played an outsize role in Biden’s 2020 victory.
Also apparent in primary exit polling is Trump’s reshaping of the Republican Party. As the GOP has lurched to the right, so has his base. More than 52 percent of his voters so far described themselves as “very conservative,” up from about 32 percent during his first run.
The share of his voters describing themselves as “somewhat conservative” fell from 46 percent to 38 percent. Less than 10 percent of Trump voters described themselves as “moderate,” down from more than 20 percent.
It’s unclear whether this trend will serve Trump in the general election. Nationwide, more Americans identify as conservative on social issues and economic issues than at any point since 2012, according to polling from Gallup last year. But Republicans accounted for the bulk of that shift, with independents moving only somewhat to the right.
There’s also evidence that swing voters are turned off by hard-right candidates, many of whom lost close contests in the 2022 midterms. Independents may be fed up with Biden, but they also may be wary of a GOP they view as too radical.

I don’t enjoy political threads here. All the conservative members of the board have left except morecowbell and I don’t see the point of echo chambers. Peas engage with her because she’s the only one left to engage with. I wouldn't say all of the conservative members have left. I would say a number of them got tired of the pile ons in the political threads and have chosen for their own mental health to engage in other threads on the boards. I agree with this. Conservatives are still here. They j just choose not to get into the mud for their own mental health. Several I know wont come to the NSBR side to post, at all. But that doesn't mean they aren't here. Sure, there have been some 'old time' members choose to walk away from 2 Peas over politics but there are others that are still here and just not commenting because it's predictable how those threads go.

If I were a conservative, I wouldn't want to speak about politics on this board. And I probably wouldn't want to watch most news channels either. There is a definite slant.

So what you are saying is this forum is not a safe haven for conservatives to enjoy having a discussion. I think that is what I am missing…their perspective. Not just 1 or 2 outspoken members. How do conservative members truly think about some of current issues at play?
I am hoping the Dems will do what they did in 2020. Come out in droves to vote making sure Republicans don’t get in. It was close last time and that was alarming. I suspect the same may occur again. I think I get confused when a republican votes for the party knowing full well that the values don’t agree with theirs. Why would you want to support such radical changes just because that’s your party? If values and policy are not particularly aligning with your own would you not want to voice/support that? Do GOPs that are on the fence realize the repercussions if they vote for something that deep down inside doesn’t feel right? It is okay to step back for a bit until something better comes along. I have jumped parties based on what is going on. I don’t feel the righteous need to back a party that doesn’t share the same values just because. “Well, my family has always voted that way so I do too.” Educate ourselves. Be independent. Make your own decisions. Read. Listen. Watch. Everything.
Is it possible for this forum to have a conservative only thread with no interference by others? I have an insatiable quest to devour everyone’s thoughts. Maybe I’m just nosy? lol

I think there is a difference between Conservative and Trump lovers. Maybe not a difference, I think you can be Conservative and not a Trump lover. If you are a Trump lover you are a conservative by definition however. Just like all squares are technically rectangles, but not all rectangles are square. Like there are Christians who believe in marriage equality and a woman's bodily autonomy and then there are the Conservative Christians who don't. I happen to think the latter are missing the entire point of Jesus, but I digress. I don't think it is fair to lump all Conservatives into the insanity that is cowbell's belief system. I believe in free speech. I don't believe in hate speech or lying though. Cowbell is clearly never going to be swayed by facts or evidence and is never going to face up to facts about Trump so I don't see the point in engaging with her. I honestly think if she went away or people stopped engaging her the non Trump conservatives might get more involved in political discussions, but I can't say I blame them for staying away when there is so much ridiculousness and circular arguments with a poster who absolutely refuses to engage in actual dialogue though. It does end up just being a pile on. I know I am in the minority on that so I just block her and try to only read political threads when I am on my tablet. I still have to see her posts if I am on my phone, sadly. There has been a massive shift in the Republican party during my 30+ years of voting. I have never really felt either party totally aligned with my views and hopped parties in my youth depending on who I wanted to vote for in the primary before being in a state where I can register as an independent and choose which party's primary I want to vote in - full disclosure this year I knew Biden had no competitions so chose to vote in republican primary to vote against Trump period. 20+ years ago there was still a real small government aspect to the Republican party that now is just completely gone - to me small government always meant small government, and no issues are more important to keep the government out of than social issues. You think there are unintended consequences to government interference in business matters but they're omnipotent in women's health- fuck you. And I won't even open the door on the bullshit of fiscal conservatism - republicans just want to spend like drunken sailors on other things. Real fiscal conservatism has been dead at least 10 years. The party is utterly broken and anyone halfway sane jumped shipped 01/06/2021. Perfect. Thank you for this post.

Does anyone read global news on a regular basis? I do. I also watch varied news carriers (CNN, Al Jazeera, MSNBC). I don't think it's common to do so in America.

It began because I wanted to see how some American stories were being reported in other countries. I regularly check stories from a few other countries.

I am 63 yrs old. I registered as an independent when I turned 18 , excited to be able to vote. Sometime after the 2016 I switched and became a Democrat because the moment the Republicans chose Trump as their representative I knew I would never ever vote for his Party. Almost 8 yrs later my opinion of Trump is a thousand times worse and have a really hard time understanding how anyone can find him worthy or even half way acceptable as POTUS.

I read BBC and Reuters fairly frequently. I read NPR, New York Times and Washington Post on-line every day. We cut cable so the only news I watch is PBS.

You witness the attempted silencing of the only conservative still left, willing to participate here... acts that specifically led you, YOU specifically, to create THIS thread to try to silence a conservative and then... then... THEN? you lament that you're "missing…their perspective" Do you have an OUNCE of self awareness? It doesn't seem so.🤔

Why do people respond to the member currently named morecowbell? In political threads. This isn't specific to morecowbell. I can't say that I have had a lot of experience with their posts. But I will not engage with a Trump supporter, just like I will not engage with someone who has been brain washed. They believe what they want to believe and very little of it is backed by facts. There is no point to a discussion with them. They won't be reasoned with. We could both be looking at the same white wall, and they will say it's green. You cannot reason with that level of denial. On the other hand, I'm open to listening to and discussing issues with Republicans. We can't and shouldn't all have the same opinions on things.

I've definitely shifted to the left, but I don't care to engage very often here. I also don't think anyone owes an explanation and have to defend themselves for no longer participating. I get my news from Twitter by making private lists. It's easier to control what type of news I want to see or a certain topic. It's definitely more right leaning now, but there's still better engagement if that's what you want.

I was an Independent until 2020, then I registered as a Republican. I live in a red state with closed primaries and gerrymandered maps. When you have a Mormon Republican governor who many Republicans in the state can't stand for his liberalism, that's an issue, and I'm certainly no fan of his. My goal is to try and vote the craziest Republicans out of the primaries. It doesn't seem to work, though. My state has a stupid caucus system that is poorly run. I had to point out to a volunteer last night why the copy of my driver's license was not with my ballot. They basically said, "Yeah, I think we did it right."
