As I was looking through my safe trying to locate my passport, I came across my bag of 30ish new letterpress plates from SC, imagine 2014-2016ish I forgot about.
I remember now putting them in there now after I had started the Studio Calico letterpress course online where she said for optimal storage and longevity, store your plates out of direct sunlight and with controlled humidity. It’s been 10 years but I feel like she said once you’ve used them (if you store them well) they can last over a year but these have never been opened so unsure if the same would apply. There’s zero yellowing and they have the same feel - do y’all think they are bad now?
l wouldn’t want to even start adding up their value if so 🤦🏼♀️
Thanks in advance!

I would think they would still be ok. But what do I know (I know absolutely nothing, lol).

I don’t know. I went to look and it seems that I threw away the plates, and like an idiot, kept the inks.

By plates, do you mean the metal plates that make the impressions? If so, how could the go bad? The only issue would be if you still had access to a letterpress machine that would be the right thickness to use them.
If not I have no idea what you’re referring to.

They were thin plastic, etched if I remember correctly.

Sounds like you need to try them out! You’ve got nothing to lose. If they no longer work, they’re trash 🤷🏻♀️ if they do you can decide if you want to use them or lose them. (It doesn’t sound like you’ve missed them in 10 years so I would vote for losing them, but that’s just me). The money was spent 10 years ago regardless.

Sorry - it’s these - and they are acrylic or something. A few have coordinating dies, but I’m talking about the clear pieces - I don’t know how to attach pics on here, but here’s Pinterest posts though? pin.it/5rD9SJIS0pin.it/4IdMtgEE1I remember when they came out, so many moons ago! But never knew anyone who had one and haven't heard of them since. Since they're some kind of plastic the way they were stored is probably going to have the biggest impact - heat, cold, sunlight, etc. I don't really understand how "opening" them can affect them unless they are vacuum sealed and degrade in the air somehow. But anyway... the only way you're going to know if they work is to try them out. Whether you want to keep them or try to sell them I think you're going to need to try at least one of them. What is there to lose? Unless you don't have the tools you need to use them, in which case I would definitely just get rid of them and cut your losses.
