I actually started stamping and cardmaking (or wanting to card make, at least) prior to when I made my foray into scrapbooking That is so interesting that you went from cardmaking to scrapbooking because it seems like so often it is the opposite. I do feel like cardmaking is somewhat replacing scrapbooking as the main paper crafting hobby. Pinkfresh isn't closing its card and stamp division...Cathy Zielske was interviewed this past December, and she does talk about the "decline of scrapbooking" and how she transitioned from scrapbooking to cardmaking. www.twincities.com/2023/12/17/cathy-zielske-card-maker-youtube/She apparently asked not to scrapbook in her new role, as she was (and I quote) "So tired of scrapbooking for magazines." I should be so lucky! I quit CZ around the same time she moved into cardmaking but I seem to recall that she was going through some big life changes, kids going out on their own after a lifetime of being her models, and figuring out her marriage in middle age. Her kids’ whole lives have been featured in books and magazines and I don’t think they were so OK with that at a certain point. If you Google Aidan Zielske one of her top hits is writing about growing up on her mom’s blog, the pictures of Cole are not ones he probably wants as his top hits online either 😬 (precisely why Shimelle has never named WB publicly - so when random people Google him when he’s 18 they don’t see pages about his Disney outfits first). Anyway, I think the decline of scrapbooking was only partly to blame, and the decline of her interest in scrapping when she no longer had family stuff to share was equally the problem. She figured out from JMcG that she could make a much better living buying/being gifted every imaginable cardmaking supply and affiliate linking the whole shebang, and probably took a lot of other empty nesters with her into cardmaking.

I made cards and scrapped in the beginning, then realized I didn’t need honkin’ big albums that no one looks at on my shelf and switched to cards for my paper fix. Life stage changes played a big role in that. Maybe it’s overgeneralizing but part of it is demographics. Younger people may fall in love with analog things again but their disposable income is lower, right now they might not have kids so they don’t feel that pull to create a photo legacy for their descendants. They’re also buying different things from different places. People in their middle years love social media for the likes and comments they get, and many don’t have time for hobbies anyway, looking after Boomer parents and their own kids. Older people already have tons of supplies and may be thinking about stash math. I agreed with quite a lot of what the original video said but also agree with those here that said it’s old news and clickbait/feeding into the CTMH closure. I also think that many scrappers have a lot of stash and aren’t going to buy as much unless they see something new and exciting, right when manufacturers seem to be playing it safe because the retailers are worrying about a shrinking market. Manufacturers aren’t selling to us, they’re selling to stores, and stores are afraid to buy the wrong products. But I’m not concerned about the hobby. It will come and go. Cardmaking (or paper cards in general) makes no sense to some people and may shrink or change too. Like someone else said, knitting and crochet have found new life with different people making different kinds of things. Not so many baby booties, more baby Yodas.

joblackford I completely agree with everything you’ve said in both of these posts. Plus, Grogu is adorable!

I agree with some of what Gwen said. I think she lives in Australia, so I imagine her perspective is a little different. I think it’s different depending on where you live and also your individual situation and circumstances. Yes, scrapbooking stores are fewer than the were during the height with Archivers, multiple stores in cities etc. However, most of those stores have been closed for more than 10 years. People have found other communities, either online or local groups or retreats. There are still a number of weekend crops in New England and I belong to 2 local groups that meet every month or every other month. I do think there are fewer people getting started scrapbooking for a number of reasons, including fewer local stores. The switch to digital photography is also a big part of that. People are not coming home from trips with rolls of film. People are sharing pictures on social media, digital scrapbooking, making photo books or just keeping pictures on their phones. I think too, that living outside the US, it's little harder for us to get hands on product in real life. I'm so lucky that one of the few bricks and mortar stores in NZ is very close to me. They will get in anything you request pretty much, but usually limit their stock to specific brands / ranges. I have certainly noticed the decline in brands, and how hard it is to get some thing. If I can find the product, it can be killer shipping that will halt my purchase

My YT feed is FULL of the-sky-is-falling scrapbooking posts now! Give it a few weeks and I'm sure most of the channels will have a video about how "scrapbooking is NOT DEAD" because of these 5 signs you'll never guess... Maybe a few will even have the title card read "I QUIT!" (worrying about scrapbooking being dead)

Meh. I can't get excited about this. I never really participated in the golden age, so I guess it doesn't feel like anything is missing or changing? I guess if you are product release/kit dependent then I could see all the changes seeming to be some sort of ending, but I haven't, so I don't feel it.
I was late to 2peas, never went to a Creative Memories or any type of home show. I've been reading Ali Edwards blog since she started, but never subscribed to kits. I read Creating Keepsakes and other magazines. While I like and miss some, other scrapbook celebs and companies leaving doesn't affect that I will find a way to document my story, photos, etc. It's changed over the years and probably will continue to evolve, but the intent and the outlet is the same.
