I was at the chiropractor's office yesterday and I am always there, so I know the employees pretty well. I was getting hooked up for stim and one of the tech's was talking to me and she said "I just heard that Trump is running for President again". I didn't know what to say to that. She is in her 20's and I know not everyone follows politics but ummmm......
She also said she wants to move to Florida. I said I wouldn't move there until DeSantis is gone. She had no idea who he is. Ummmmm.....
I changed the subject pretty quickly because I didn't want to say something snarky.

I really can’t imagine being that clueless. Scary that someone might be that out of touch.

There will always be young people who don’t follow current events. Nothing new. They are just in their own little world. I wonder if they even vote.

Young people don't read newspapers or even watch the news in the same way we did but I would find it hard to see how you could be unaware of Trump running again. At least she knew there was an election looming I guess.
My younger DD (29) relies on her SO to tell her anything she 'needs to know', in her words - which I find a little disconcerting if I'm honest. My older DD gets her news/current affairs via news apps on her phone.

I have a friend who purposely doesn’t follow the news at all.
In a conversation last week with a big friend group, she couldn’t say who the president was. We all joked that if she had to go to the hospital in an emergency they would think she had had a stroke.
She’s very smart, runs her own business, keeps her own books, reads a lot, is a great mom, and is fun to be around.
She just says she’s happier not knowing anything about world events or politics.
She didn’t know anything about Israel/Gaza, didn’t know who our governor is, didn’t know when Election Day was, didn’t know who is president or who is running for president 🤷🏻♀️
Just doesn’t care and lives her life.

I always get upset when I hear women say they are not interested in politics or that they don’t know anything about politics. Unfortunately it happens rather too often.

I can certainly understand being happier being oblivious to many world events but I find it hard imagine how you can avoid overhearing conversations, snippets of news, mentions of world events in places other than news shows to the extent of truly not knowing who your president is.

I truly can’t think of the last time I overheard the news, though. I have never been in a restaurant or bar that had the news playing. Most people don’t just watch tv - they stream - so you don’t flip channels or see commercials. And she doesn’t use social media.

I watch the first 20 minutes of the Today show to get an overview of the news and then I might search out stories that I want more info on. I get a lot of news on here and also from DS who is a 24-hour news junkie.
I don't watch local news or the nightly news unless my parents are over and have to see Lester, but some people just don't care about politics or the world as a whole outside of their bubble.

It's also quite common here for the TV to be set on news stations at the doctors office, restaurants (unless it's sports), hotels, etc.

You passed on a great opportunity to educate someone! Point them in the right direction. However, I certainly have my days where I want nothing to do with politics, yet now is not the time to have one’s head buried in the sand.

My 26yo daughter has always been very engaged about politics. My 19yo son couldn't give two hoots. But even he knows that trump is running again, and we're in another country.

One of the pundits on a news channel recently said, "If you 'don't do politics,' politics will do you." This was said in the context of the recent SCOTUS activities.

My co-worker is in her 50s. She does not keep up with current events. She doesn't watch tv. Most of our music stations here don't really cover things like that. The only way she has any idea what's going on in the world is from her husband (who's a teacher) or one of us in the office.

I would prefer to not follow politics, it depresses me. I have been reading the national news, and following since the Oompa Loompa ran the first time and because of COVID. Even when I wasn't reading the news, I knew who was president, and mostly know what was going on from the Peas...

The only people who can afford to not follow current events or politics are people with privilege.

Not only tv but YouTube, radio, even casual conversation in public places. This morning I was watching something on YouTube and every 15 minutes there were political ads running. Later today DH and I ran into a friend and “Did your guy win yesterday?” came up in conversation (it was kind of a joke since both guys running in the primaries won). I can’t imagine living in such a total bubble that I wouldn’t even know who’s president. Kids discuss upcoming elections in social studies classes. My kid was very interested in the last presidential election and asked me a lot of questions. I can’t fathom not being able to at least give rudimentary answers.

I'm not surprised. I have a friend in her 60's who is incredibly uninformed about politics, pop culture, local news - all of it.

She may not watch the news but I see her on her phone while she is waiting for someone's machine to go off so she is clearly on the internet. It is impossible not to have known that "it" is running again. I wonder if she even knew what Jan 6 was about?
If it was just the two of us in the room, I would have had a polite conversation about it but I didn't want to put anyone on edge when they are trying to relax with their heat and stim.

How do you know she’s on the internet? She could be texting or playing a game app. She could be shopping in an app. I think the peas would be really surprised to know how easy it is to avoid any news at all. We never listen the the radio, we stream music, so we don’t hear anything there. We don’t watch tv, we stream, so no news on NETFLIX or D+. Kids are homeschooled. We don’t do much YouTube. We aren’t in waiting rooms where we would see or hear a tv. We don’t have cable, so no cable news. You can set your internet homepage to whatever you want it to be, so you don’t necessarily see news just because you open a browser. Even if you do open a yahoo or google home page, what you see is determined by your browsing history, so if I’ve never clicked or searched anything related to politics or current events, you are unlikely to have those articles pop up on your suggested stories. I think the peas would be very surprised how different other people’s daily exposure to news is.

I have a friend in her mid forties who says she will vote with her DH, because he knows things . I know men who vote the way their wives tell them to, though. When we were married, I’d only remind my ex to vote if I thought he was going to vote the way I was otherwise I’d just be encouraging him to cancel my vote. Yes, he could get so busy he would not get home from work in time to vote without a reminder. 🙄

My daughter is 27 and she's fairly aware of presidential politics and national events. Local news though? Hit or miss.
