CNN is talking about Britt’s rebuttal last night. In showing clips of her campaign and speech following being elected, it sounds like the fake voice and terrible acting are common for her.

I don’t think she was in the kitchen to talk about kitchen table issues. She was there to try to “relate” to the average suburban mom. That’s her whole persona.

www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/03/08/katie-britt-state-of-the-union-response/Opinion Don’t go in the kitchen. I’m delivering a State of the Union response. By Alexandra Petri SWEETIE, please DON’T go in the KITCHEN. I am delivering my State of the Union response!
Fellow MOMS, if you are like me, you lie awake at 2 a.m., wondering how you can BE in three places at once: this KITCHEN, the Senate and the opening monologue of a Purge movie. But you see, we CAN do it, by WHISPERING slowly with an intensity usually reserved for WASP moms trying to prevent their daughters from making a SCENE in the J. Crew fitting rooms. (We’re not LEAVING yet PULL YOURSELF TOGETHER.) I am delivering these remarks in a WAY that makes you think this isn’t ACTUALLY my kitchen and I’m not SUPPOSED to BE here, but no one has dared REMOVE me because I am SPEAKING in a TONE that makes the PROSPECT of interrupting me TOO FRIGHTENING!
JOE BIDEN is DITHERING and DIMINISHED! I am striking a CLEAR contrast by delivering my RESPONSE at a speed at which I cannot speak NORMALLY but must ENUNCIATE each WORD with the intensity of someone reading a PRAGER U text aloud at an OPEN CALL AUDITION. Usually WORDS delivered in this TONE are delivered at a VOLUME that makes them impossible to HEAR, and you have to GUESS them from the expression on the SLOWLY FALLING face of the customer service EMPLOYEE at whom they are DIRECTED!
NO you CANNOT access the fridge right now SWEETIE! I am GRAPHICALLY RECOUNTING A HORRIFIC ACCOUNT OF SEXUAL ASSAULT in a HUSHED WHISPER to spread FEAR about IMMIGRATION, which will hopefully prove that I am more REAGANESQUE yet also more MATERNAL than JOE BIDEN, a set of COMBINED characteristics I GUESS some FOCUS GROUP was looking FOR. Y’ALL!
I REPRESENT the state of ALABAMA in the SENATE, and you might have heard some SCARY things about in vitro fertilization, but I’m PROUD to tell you with a TWINKLE in my EYE that it is STILL LEGAL despite the BEST EFFORTS of my colleagues to TAKE IT FROM YOU. SOON, it will be the ONLY thing we MOMS can do with our BODIES that IS definitely LEGAL! Here is a SMILE! I am in a KITCHEN. “WE want to help LOVING MOMS AND DADS bring PRECIOUS LIFE into this world.” I have not stopped SMILING. This isn’t CHILLING! It’s FOLKSY! I am bringing WARMTH and also VERGE OF TEARS energy.

I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry at how far out of touch the Republican Party is. I can't believe Tuberville actually called her a housewife. His qualifications are what? He was a football coach? I’m not disparaging football players or coaches, I just don’t know how that qualifies him to be a senator, other than his celebrity status. I disagree with her and didn't like her speech, but I'm offended. She is eminently more qualified with a law degree, years of experience as Chief of Staff to a former senator, student council president in college (might not be the exact title but close) etc
At the same time, she allowed the Republican Party to use her to deliver a terrible speech and possibly lied about the story of sexual assault.

She's a liar? Shocked. Shocked, I say. This dude has receipts and anyone supporting her for exploiting women further can go kick rocks:
In case you don't like watching videos and want the gist: Dude (Jonathan M. Katz) decided to confirm Britt's story. She went to the border along with Marsha Blackburn (TN) when she entered office, as she said. If you go to Marsha's website, she has the details from the visits as well as information about the woman Britt is referring to in her response to the SOTU (and many other speeches she's given). The woman who was trafficked and raped so horribly? It happened in Mexico and she testified to Congress in 2015 about it happening to her IN 2004-2008. It wasn't in the US and Joe Biden wasn't even VP, let alone President.

^^^^^. More at Blackburn's web site.. January 17, 2023 There are videos on the official Senate Blackburn Home Newsroom News VIDEO: Blackburn, Hyde-Smith, Britt Expose Harsh Reality Of Biden’s Border Crisis January 17, 2023 NASHVILLE, TENN. – U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), along with Senators Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) and Katie Britt (R-Ala.), released a mini-documentary to highlight what they encountered during their visit to the southern border last week. The video exposes the harsh reality of Biden’s border crisis, capturing the moment the Senators witnessed nearly two-dozen illegal immigrants —including a pregnant woman and small children — wade across the near-freezing water and illegally enter the United States. It also recounts heartbreaking stories from human trafficking survivors like Karla Jacinto Romero, who was exploited by the cartels for sex and labor and raped more than 40,000 times. Partial Transcript Below: Senator Britt On Human Trafficking At The Border“We have also heard from victims of human trafficking, and let me tell you, those stories are gut-wrenching. As [Karla Jacinto Romero] talked about being abused from the time she was 5 years old, to actually being trafficked between the ages of 12 to 16, you can’t help as a mom but think about your own children. If we, as leaders of the greatest nation in the world, are not fighting to protect the most vulnerable, we are not doing our job,” said Senator Britt. Senator Hyde-Smith On Biden’s Lack Of Action That Led To A Crisis “It is just unbelievable that this Biden administration is not doing any more than they're doing to pass policies that would stop this. Two years have gone by and how many hundreds of thousands [have crossed] that we don't know who they are, we don't know where they are, and we certainly don't know what they're up to. That is what's causing all these fentanyl deaths, and we have to start doing something about it,” said Senator Hyde-Smith. www.blackburn.senate.gov/2023/1/video-blackburn-hyde-smith-britt-expose-harsh-reality-of-biden-s-border-crisis

jesspiper.substack.com/p/the-fundie-baby-voiceThe Fundie Baby Voice As soon as Senator Katie Britt started speaking, I knew exactly who she is. She is so many of the pastor's wives and Sunday School teachers I knew growing up in an Evangelical church. Be sweet. Obey. JESS PIPER MAR 8, 2024 I was about to head to bed after the State of the Union last night, when I heard a voice coming from my television that stopped me in my tracks. I didn’t know who was speaking, but it really didn’t matter—I recognized the voice. It was so many voices from my childhood. It was so many Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings. It was potlucks, and baby showers, and graduations, and birthday parties.
It was Senator Katie Britt using her well-practiced fundie baby voice.
I threw so many folks for a loop last year when I discussed the voice in a video. I used my “training” as a former Evangelical, a Southern Baptist, to describe the breathy cadence and the soft, child-like high pitch. Folks outside of Fundamentalist culture had never heard the term—they just knew the voice made them uncomfortable.
I know that voice well…in fact I can’t shake it myself. It was engrained in every woman I knew from church and every time I speak about it, folks will point out that I sound that way myself. Yes, friends. That’s the point.
Be sweet. Obey. Prove it by speaking in muted tones.
You all know Michelle Duggar. Remember her voice? Too high pitched? Too much like a little girl? Too breathy. That’s purposeful. Michelle has to show submission to her husband in all interactions public. She stared at Jim Bob anytime he spoke. She was quiet until given a question or prompt. She was also harboring secrets and that’s something I can’t forget. Terrible secrets behind that voice.
Christian nationalist Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, is married to a woman who also uses the voice. I first heard her speak in a Fox News interview. I had the same reaction I had to Senator Britt. I turned the video up and listened…and got a cold shiver. Kelly Johnson says nothing too awfully problematic during the interview, but we all know she holds anti-LGBTQ views and even once correlated gay folks with bestiality and incest.
Johnson removed a document from her Christian Counseling site that said, ““We believe and the Bible teaches that any form of sexual immorality, such as adultery, fornication, homosexuality, bisexual conduct, bestiality, incest, pornography or any attempt to change one’s sex, or disagreement with one’s biological sex, is sinful and offensive to God,”
Some women use their fundie baby voices from habit. From years of lessons, but some have something to hide which they cover for in fundie baby voice and a good-natured temperament. From an abusive husband, to a drinking problem, to hiding a pack of cigarettes in the kitchen, it was often something.
Many of these women also couldn’t keep it up at all times, and I saw lots of masks slip when these women spoke to their children. I remember staying the night with a friend and her mom dropping the voice at home. It can be a little creepy to watch the venom spewed at a child who has spilled his milk when his mother was dripping honey from her mouth just the instant before. It feels cold.
Back to Sen Katie Britt and the Republican response to the State of the Union speech; it was filled with Fundamentalist ideology and the fundie baby voice. The setting was her kitchen—that is not by accident. It is likely that she thinks this is where most women should spend their time. She’s wearing a modest shirt, opened just far enough to see her cross necklace. She started her speech by indicating that she’s “just a mom” mentioning her children’s names to assure other fundamentalist Christians that she understands her role in society.
Her face says as much as her voice in fundie culture—that hyperbolic wince that she performed each time she said “Biden.” It means, “I’m going to say something here that isn’t very nice, but y’all know I’m going to keep it sweet.”
The bless your heart effect.
The breathless speech, the incongruent facial movements and smiles. The cadence of condescension. I am better than you, and here are the ways. I have children. They are perfect. I have a marriage. It is perfect. I am pretty and well-educated. I am a Christian—I am god fearing and I prove it by holding hands with my family and praying for the rest of you. I am better than you.
Now that you know the term and what to look for, I want to warn you that the voice doesn’t always equate to a terrible woman or even a submissive one. I grew up with so many who used the voice because they were trained to use it. They are kind women who show up for others in sickness and in need. They take care of their families and their neighbors and their church sisters and brothers. They are living the life they feel called to lead—I give them grace and understanding. They are not out to harm others.
But, I pay attention to the voice when I hear it from folks in power. I am jolted awake when I hear the voice dripping sugar from a mouth that claims to love all while stripping rights from many.
I know that they believe proximity to power, submitting to men in power, will save them and their families and keep them in the good grace of the men truly in power.

www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/03/09/fact-check-katie-britt-sex-trafficking/Sean Ross, Britt’s communications director, confirmed that she was talking about Karla Jacinto Romero — who has testified before Congress about being forced to work in Mexican brothels from 2004 to 2008. (A viral TikTok by journalist Jonathan Katz first revealed that Britt was speaking about Romero.) In a phone conversation and a statement, Ross disputed that Britt’s language was misleading.
We disagree. Let’s take a look.
The Facts Britt’s account of Romero’s experience was a centerpiece of her rebuttal to Biden’s address. The way Britt sets up the story, there is no indication that she is talking about a woman who was working in brothels in Mexico during the George W. Bush administration. This is how the passage unfolds.
She first blames Biden for the surge of migrants at the border. Then she says she visited the border shortly after she took office. That would be 2023. At length, she details the story of an unnamed victim that she says she met on her trip. The implication is that the woman recently crossed the border — because of “sex trafficking by the cartels.” She strongly suggests that her abuse took place in the United States: “We wouldn’t be okay with this happening in a Third World country. This is the United States of America, and it is past time, in my opinion, that we start acting like it.” She ends by reinforcing that such alleged trafficking is Biden’s fault: “President Biden’s border policies are a disgrace.”
But Biden has nothing to do with Romero’s story. As she testified nine years ago, her mother threw her out of her house at age 12 and she “fell prey to a professional pimp.” She says she then spent the next four years in brothels before a regular client helped her escape when she was 16 years old. There is no indication in her story that drug cartels were involved, though Britt said that in the State of the Union response and has made a similar claim on at least one other occasion. Romero was never trafficked to the United States; instead, she says many men who paid to have sex with her were “foreigners visiting my city looking to have sexual interactions with minors like me.”
The Pinocchio Test In a high-profile speech like this, a politician should not mislead voters with emotionally charged language. Romero’s story is tragic and may be evocative of other Mexican girls trapped in the sex trade in that country. But she was not trafficked across the border — and her story has nothing to do with Biden. Britt’s failure to make that clear earns her Four Pinocchios.

Here’s the entire speech. link This is a perfect example of what the Republicans are doing. She is making all kind of accusations with absolutely no facts to back up what she is claiming. She is deliberately misinterpreting events. This is what she said about something that happened in Mexico City during George W. Bush’s term. But when you look at what she said it sure doesn’t sound like it. “That’s where I spoke to a woman who shared her story with me. She had been sex trafficked by the cartels starting at the age of 12. She told me not just that she was raped every day, but how many times a day she was raped. The cartels put her on a mattress in a shoebox of a room, and they sent men through that door over and over again for hours and hours on end. We wouldn’t be ok with this happening in a third world country. This is the United States of America, and it is past time, in my opinion, that we start acting like it. President Biden’s border policies are a disgrace.”And then there is this… “From abandoning our allies in his disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan to desperately pushing another dangerous deal with Iran, President Biden has failed.”Who made the decision to leave Afghanistan after making a deal with a terrorist group and not including the legally elected government in the negotiations? And how much did that agreement with the Taliban contribute to the collapse of the U.S. Military trained Afghanistan army? A collapse that caught US officials by surprise. Just exactly how? “Meanwhile, the Chinese Communist Party is undercutting America’s workers.”

Even bashing her in Alabama. Opinion piece . Katie Britt, Alabama’s so-called ‘reasonable’ senator, lost herself and much moreUpdated: Mar. 09, 2024, 3:57 p.m.|Published: Mar. 09, 2024, 12:12 p.m. By John Archibald | jarchibald@al.com This is an opinion column. Katie Britt’s kitchen was empty. Her table was bare. There was nothing to see but her. And she was – they told us – ready for her closeup. Come on in, America. Meet your future, and see just how normal it looks. None of this Tommy Tuberville stuff, with the casual racism or the flip-flopping or the hopeless ignorance about the three branches of government. This was Katie Britt, Alabama’s Great Slight Hope. This was Katie freakin’ Britt, the second coming of Dick Shelby, who could keep his dignity, and hold on to most of himself while maintaining his conservative values, bringing home pork by the barrelful and appeasing the red meat Republican crowd and the Business Council of Alabama to boot. Katie freakin’ Britt, the one they said was different. The one they said could show this whole country that young, educated GOP women were still a thing. They said she could demonstrate that Republicans could still be civil and dignified and respected, that they didn’t have to be performative clowns in MAGA hats, like Marjorie Taylor Greene. Katie Britt was the answer. All eyes were on her Thursday night as she stepped onto a vast stage from that unnaturally empty kitchen to respond to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address. The country was watching as she began to read her predictable script, to audition for the role of her lifetime. America was looking for proof of normalcy. And it got “The Three Faces of Eve.” Which is sort of appropriate, I suppose, since Britt has had to use a slew of personalities to pretend to be everything to everyone in her own state’s GOP. Like always, you become who you pretend to be. And Katie Britt was everybody but the person people claim she is. What was the part she was trying out for again? One who could restore faith in the reason and reasonability of the future Republican Party? Some said the real audition was for the vice presidency of the United States, a shot at being second in command to Donald Trump himself, an old man’s heartbeat away from becoming the leader of the free world, should it all go down as some polls predict. All she had to do was read her script on a teleprompter, catch the bouquet, take her bow and take her place as a politician to be both respected and reckoned with. And then… And then she started to talk. And by the third paragraph of her prepared speech it was clear she was no longer auditioning for the role of vice president, or for the role of respected politician, or the role of likable mom or genuine human. She was Faye Dunaway in “Mommie Dearest” shrieking “No wire hangers!” She was Nicolas Cage in anything. She was William Shatner in “The Wrath of Katie.” She was over-the-top and anything and everything but reasonable. She wasn’t trying out for VP. She was trying out for the cold open of “Saturday Night Live.” As the punchline and the punching bag. Katie Britt was supposed to be the smart one, the reasonable one, the regular one. She was supposed to be the one who would make Alabamians proud — or less embarrassed than they too often are. Unfortunately, she will be remembered another way. As a joke. Which is too bad. Because she seems to come off pretty well when she only pretends to be herself. John Archibald is a two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize.
