From Psychology Today what is a happy place. link”Place attachment refers to the cognitive-emotional connection between a person and a physical place, and this “relationship” has many benefits. Thinking about your favorite physical place can be used for stress reduction with a technique called “guided imagery.” From the article… “Physical spaces and places affect how we feel, think, and behave. This sentiment is at the heart of environmental psychology. You can harness the benefits of thinking about your favorite physical place–your literal “happy place.”
People feel connected to their favorite places. In environmental psychology, place attachment refers to the cognitive-emotional bond that forms between an individual and a physical setting.”I have had a happy place since I was a teenager. A couple weeks ago I asked a couple of my friends where their “happy place” was. Both of them had no idea what I was talking about. So I explained that it was a place I like to go to where I’m at peace or in the moment meaning I’m not stewing about things. One friend said it would be a place her and her husband visit every year, the other friend had no idea where her happy place could be. After that I wondered if there were happy places. According to Psychology Today there are physical places a person can go to or think about that is good for the mind, good for the soul. Mine is the Sonoma County Coast from the town of Jenner south to the wharfs of Bodega Bay. And it has been since I was a teenager. And for me the best time is when it’s foggy and windy which pretty much guarantees there are no people at any of the beaches so I’m by myself. Perfect. So my question is do you have a happy place?

Any place on or near the water. It can be a river, a lake but should be the ocean.

I love being at the beach. Since living in Europe, we have been to Greece many times. Despite having Italian/Maltese heritage (and I've loved it every time we've visited those countries, Greece is my Happy Place. I feel so at home there, I love the landscape and the food and the fact that we are never far from water. I could visit there every year and never grow tired of it!

When I was in court reporting school and about to go to the state testing in San Francisco, the school brought in a hypnotist to work with those of us going to the exam to train us in relaxation techniques. He wanted each of us to envision a happy place with all the details that we could summon up, sounds, smells, physical feelings such as sunshine or cold. He walked us through being able to place ourselves in that environment any time we were feeling stressed and needed to quickly relax. He gave us a triggering mechanism of focusing on our fingers and placing the tip of our thumb and forefinger together very lightly to invoke the feeling of our individual happy place.
He then took us through a toe to top of our head relaxation exercise. I found this to be very beneficial and still use it to this day. When I lightly press my fingertips together, I feel my heartbeat slowing, my breathing becoming easier, my jaw go slack, and tension melting away. He explained that a happy place was something we could carry with us if we chose to and that with practice, it would work better and better. I can actually imagine the sun on my face and hear the waves crashing on the shore.

I have a few. Disneyworld and Hawaii would both be right up toward the top of the list.

My happy place moves! It is around a campfire. I love sitting around a campfire. To me, there is nothing sweeter in the whole world. I feel at peace there

A river in the town where I grew up...I love going back for a visit and walking, swimming or jumping into the deeper pools of water.

We have a place on a small lake in Northern MN. When I am sitting down by the lake on a nice day, it’s about as happy as I get. When I was in the early stages of grieving my mom it was a very healing place for me. I feel fortunate that I have such easy access to the place where I am happiest.

The beach near me. I only need 30 min there to be relaxed but it’s amazing.

My grandparents’ house. It was always calm and loving there, and my grandmother had lots of beautiful things. My grandfather’s workshop smelled wonderful, and we love to watch him work down there. Their garden was beautiful, filled with rose bushes.
Later, my best friend’s house had lots of her artwork, things she brought back from her travels, thrift store finds, beautiful antiques, and a lovely kitchen. It, too was a very loving place filled with laughter and friends.
Both of these places are gone now. I really miss them and the people who lived there.

Preferably the ocean, but any body of water will do. In my house it is my craft room and with my pets.

Yep, I have several -- all of the outdoors ones have one thing in common: they are at or near the ocean. Nagshead/Outer Banks is #1 but there are many others. Ocean beaches are definitely my happy place.
Inside my house it is my scrap/craft/computer room.

The ocean. I'm not at all a beach person, but it makes my heart happy to be by the sea.

Yep, I have several. My happy place is also my safe space in 2 instances. My bed, and my husband. Add them together? Heaven. Anytime I am depressed or anxious both of these make me feel so much better. I once was trying to say I was going to “lay down and throw a fit” when I was upset but it came out “throw down and lay a fit” so that’s what we called it anytime I needed to go to my safe space since then. The other place is a bit less specific, but can best be described as dark and cold and late at night or very early morning. (Including my bedroom every night!) If I am not doing well those are sure to help. Being outside in nature, not just on the porch, at night when it’s windy and there is a chill in the air feels amazing. Add in rain or snow? Good luck getting me to leave.

Hilton Head Island beach or really anywhere on the island.
At home, it is my craft room. Just walking into that very well lit space can be enough to change my mood.

Home. My home is quiet and I feel content there. It's also filled with things that I love. It's my refuge from the noise filled external world.

Outside of home, it’s a place in south west England that used to be a small fishing village but has grown over the years and it’s where my Dad was evacuated to in the war to live with his aunts and uncles and go to school etc. Then we spent many happy holidays (vacations) there as kids and still go back to for long weekends whenever possible now. At home it’s my bed- soft, cosy, comfortable, enveloping and comforting in every way.

Anywhere in the sun, especially if there are any kind of nature sounds like birds chirping, the wind blowing or waves /water lapping.

The ocean. We are just getting back from St. Croix and the beaches were heaven—the rest of the island not so much. Uncrowded beaches, crystalline turquoise water, gentle waves, teeny little fishies investigating your toes.
I also love the open space where I walk my dog year-round. I love tracking the seasons—seeing the vegetation change over the months. The annual ripening of wild raspberries and wineberries. Mushrooms, wildflowers, leaves of the trees.

Any place on or near the water. It can be a river, a lake but should be the ocean. Definitely this. Anywhere near water makes me very happy. If I had to be more specific, I would say the Yarra River at Warrandyte, the surf beach at Inverloch, or the Murray River anywhere. Hmmmm, the swim up bar in the pool overlooking the beach at Koh Samui last year made me pretty bloody happy too!

I have a few...
Home. My family is here. My dogs. I am at peace at home and know how lucky I am that home is a safe, happy space.
My parents home. Knowing I am loved and cared for even as an adult and that I can relax and not be on edge and know my family is accepted for being themselves.
Torrey Pines area of San Diego. The palm trees swaying in the breeze, the crashing waves, the surfers, the wild plants and flowers.
Up in the mountains away from the noise. I love the breeze rustling in the trees and the smell of clean air.

My happy place is our cottage in Michigan, but my last two summers there were a little rough so I feel like I need to remake it back into my happy place. I'm starting to look forward to going back, so I'm optimistic.

Our vacation home in Hot Springs, Virginia, and specifically, the spa garden at the Homestead resort. It feels like family and comfort and relaxation and peacefulness all rolled into one. <3

My craft room is my ultimate happy place, well I guess my house in general too.
Outside of my house it would be sitting on a bench on Main Street at Disneyland eating a pretzel and people watching. I could do that for hours.

The sky, the sunrise/sunset would be my anywhere anytime one. The Okanagan area in southern BC, Canada, where I've spent most my summers. Picturing myself floating in my aunt's pool, sun shining, looking at the view of the hills and lake.
