Following wordsmith 's happy news and comments from Peas made to it and made over the years, I was wondering how common multiple Pea/family births are. Sadly, there have been none in my family for over 100 years, if not longer. However, I have 4 friends each with a set of twins, one set identical, the others all non-identical and two sets of those were with medical help. I know of at least 4 more sets of twins locally, one identical triplets and one non-identical triplets. Are multiples rare in your circle? Can I please ask that if we start discussing, it's just regarding numbers and sexes but not about difficulties with pregnancies and subsequent stories. I'm meaning for this to be lighthearted but am happy to delete if the consensus is that it's too personal. Thank you.

Yes (not biolgical family, but my (step)mom who really raised me). Mom has eight siblings and two are male, fraternal twins. Each of those twins had fraternal twins (boy boy and boy girl). Another sibling had boy girl twins.

I have brothers who are twins but otherwise there aren’t any other twins in my very large extended family. I don’t have any friends run multiples, either.

My youngest brothers are twins, probably identical but the technology wasn’t as advanced back then as it is now. They were babies 6 and 7 in our family! When I was 12 weeks pregnant with my first, my doctor suspected twins due to me measuring larger than expected, so he sent me for a scan. Just one, thankfully!

I marked non identical twins but sadly, I don't know for sure whether the twins were identical. My aunt's twin died at birth or shortly after. This was almost 101 years ago. There have been no multiples on the other side of the family.

My youngest brothers are identical twins. All the sets of twins in our extended family are identical.
My dad's sister had twins, plus he had a set of twin cousins. My mom's cousins are twins, one of them has twins, the other has twin grandsons.

No twins in our family on either side that I've know of or have ever heard of. I have one friend who had help conceiving her twin girls then very quickly after their birth fell pregnant naturally with her third DD. It was as if the first pregnancy kick started her reproductive system somehow

I am a non-identical twin and we are the first in both sides of our family since the late 1800s. But right after we were born, a set of identical twin cousins were born. So two sets of twins in two years for our family. And no more since then.

I have non identical twins....although I don't know of many others in my family. My moms 2nd cousin had twins as well and that is about it.
I grew up in a very small town (less than 1000 people) but oddly there are lots of fraternal twins in my town. My twins were in a class with 2 other sets of twins....and the school is so small that there is only one class per each grade...so out of 23 students there was 3 sets of twins...seemed odd to me. We say it is in the water. LOL My best friend growing up had a set of twins as well a year before me. She was 22 and I was 23 so maternal age wasn't a factor.

My grandma had fraternal (b/g) twins. Since my aunt and uncle though, no additional twins born in our family.

No twins in either side of our family. There might have been one set on my mom's side down the line, something in my memory is thinking that. I always kinda wanted twins.. but nope. My first two though were only 14 months apart.. weirdly people would ask if they were twins cause they look so much alike...
My mom did have an aunt who had lots of babies and they were always HUGE babies.. over 10 pounds plus.. I think the largest was 13 pounds.... not sure if diabetes related or not.. it was YEARS ago.. maybe 70 years.

I have identical twins, but I am it on the multiple births, and identical twins don’t run in families .

My grandma on my dad’s side was one of 14 and there was at least 1 set of twins in there. Out of 18 cousins on that side one had identical boy twins. That’s it.

My mom is a fraternal twin and she had same age fraternal twin cousins on her dad’s side so all of them had the same last name and similar first names. All of them lived in the same town and were in the same grade at the same small school. She would tell a story about how all of them ended up in the same class at one point and the teacher told them that two of them had to switch to a different class so all four of them got up and left! My mom had 8 kids but no twins. Her twin had no kids. I don’t know of any other twins in the family on either side since.

not in my direct line (so I voted singletons) but two of my mum's first cousins (who were sisters) had twins. One set were definitely fraternal (boy/girl) in 1950, I'm not sure on the other (both girls) - 1964
A second cousin once removed had 12 kids with 2 sets of twins - one set identical boys, the other boy/girl - in 1960 and 1962 (with a singleton in 1961)
There's also another 2nd once removed cousin who had twins (boy/girl) in 1909 followed by triplets(boy/girl/girl) in 1911 as well as 5 singletons.
All of these are related on my mother's father's side - descending from the same ancestral couple through different siblings

I have fraternal b/g twins. They will be 29 in June. There are no other sets of twins on either side of my family. Same for DH's family.

My Mom had twin boys born in 1948, prematurely. Sadly, they only lived a day. I was only a year-and-a-half old, so I don't remember this, but when I was older, I would visit their grave with my Mom. She told me that the hospital wouldn't release her in time for the funeral. She said she stood at the hospital window and watched the hearse go by on the way to the cemetery. Broke my heart to hear this.
My younger brother, born in 1951, has twin daughters.
My nephew has twin sons.
My great niece has twin daughters.
My first cousin has twin sons.
None of these sets of twins are identical and they're all on my Mom's side of the family. I hope I didn't miss any, but yes, I would say our family has had multiple births!

My sisters are fraternal twins. My father's mother was an identical twin and my mother had fraternal twin aunt/uncle (although the girl died shortly after birth). Mom also had a first cousin who had two sets of twins, but I don't recall if there were boy/girl or same sex. Of the 7 grandchildren none had twins, though one cousin miscarried a set early in the pregnancy. Of the 10 great grandchildren, there are no twins, but the two youngest have not had children yet.
DH's maternal grandmother was a twin, but I've never heard if they were identical or not. Both had passed away before he was born. One of his cousins has fraternal twin grandchildren.

I have a daughter-in-law who has twins running in her family. She and her twin brother were born on the same day as their father and twin aunt even! She's very hopeful to have twins herself. I would love that.

I had fraternal twins.. after I had my first. 35 yrs ago.
my maternal grandfather had twin siblings who died at birth (born on the farm in the early 1880's)..
that's it. I was told I had a 25% chance of fraternal twins if I went to have more kids.. so that was it!!

No, and I would be so anxious about mixing them up that it wouldnt be good for me to have twins.

My sister spontaneously had twin boys. No others that we know of in the family. My two DDs are 28 & 24 and neither have had any babies yet. They are both a little nervous about the possibility of twins!

All sorts of twins and higher-order multiples in my family and my husband's.
Science tells us the following:
1. Identical twins are basically a random occurrence. 2. The tendency in families to have twins only runs through the maternal side.
Science is wrong; it just doesn't know it yet. I had identical twins, as did my cousin Brenda. My mother's father was an identical twin and there are other identicals on my mom's side of the family.
My husband's grandmother miscarried twins, had triplet siblings who did not survive, his mother has identical twin brothers, his sister miscarried twins, and there are lots of other twins on that side of the family.
I have heard way too many stories about identicals running in families to believe that science has this one nailed down. Identicals are not particularly well-studied, for one thing. They make up one-third of twins, and twins are approximately 1 in 100 births. There's still a lot to learn about monozygotic twins (identicals). I also don't think they know enough about twins in general to say that the male does not contribute to a genetic tendency. I realize my experience is anecdotal, but I also firmly believe that we do not know wayyyyy more than we know, even with all of the technological advances in science and medicine. I base this on the "discovery" of the "interstitium" several years back, among other observations.

Twins are pretty common in my family, on my dad's side. My great-grandma lost a set at birth. My grandma lost a set at birth. My aunt lost a set before birth. My dad had twins with my step mom. My little sister (dad and step mom, one of the twins) had a set.
All fraternal.
