I saw the other thread about bathing suits and thought this was an interesting question.
I have no use for hot air balloons and bicycles with flowers. Those get tossed in the "give away" pile.
Icons I can always use are guitars and video game controllers. Can you tell I scrap teen boys?
Besides hearts, stars, arrows, etc., which work with everything, what are the icons that usually work for you? Which ones do you struggle with?

I am with you on guitars and controllers love and hot air balloons and bicycles--although withOUT the flowers I like a bike icon. I also like gears and clocks and sun and clouds, all of which can be used for a wide variety of stories. I use alot of stars and circles and arrows, and I like balloons. The rest of the icons I use are usually specific theme related (birthday cakes and candles, hockey sticks and gear, food icons).

Why can't there be a bicycle w/o the flowers? I rode bicycles all the time when I was a kid and my son & his friends lived on their bikes at that age. At no time did I ever think of putting flowers in the basket. I guess the other icons that I tend to ignore are the random ones that someone somewhere in marketing decides is going to be the next big thing. Like the whole chandelier outburst years ago. And sloths? Another fun question artbabe.

Great question!
Easy or flexible for me includes: cameras, ARROWS, feathers, tickets, suns and clouds (but not rain!), rainbows, butterflies, dogs and cats and pawprints, flowers (I guess...),
Medium - things I use BUT have to remember to use on SPECIFIC pages - sunglasses/glasses, trees, birds, telephones, suitcases
Hard are: lemonade stands, houses, pickup trucks, bicycles, trees, faces/people, bathing suits, palm trees, pencils/crayons/staplers/pushpins/scissors, typewriters

I mean, someone can probably use them, and I could on a LO about a candy store, but I never go, so… Also these weird hanging lanterns. No idea what I’d use those for. I could use flowers, leaves, cameras, hearts, stars, labels, butterflies and maybe clouds and rainbows all day long. Personally, I don’t like/use any office supplies, or potted plants…I can use flowers and leave all day long, but not in pots. No dream catchers, lanterns, zoo animals (if I’m doing a LO about zoo animals, which I wouldn’t, I would not add animal diecuts.)

I feel like every icon except generic hearts, stars, etc. are difficult to use because I don’t fit the typical market demographics for a scrapbooker. I’ve never received an ephemera pack where most of the icons are not applicable to my day to day life and pictures.
I am however toying with cutting up some of the bicycles with flowers and sticking a little dog in the basket somehow since he was the only thing consistently in my basket when I rode my bike often.

I have problems with so many icons. Household items come to mind first - furniture, potted plants, lamps. Other items mentioned here like dream catchers, hot air balloons, regular balloons for that matter, food, campers, office supplies (except binder clips), vehicles/bikes, etc. Not to say I have never or will never use them but it will be on a one off layout here or there. But now I feel like I need to go back and see what I do like this is quite a list here...ha ha!!
ETA what I find easier to work with.
Hearts, flowers, stars, sun, clouds, sunglasses, butterflies, cameras, rainbows, ampersands, mason jars
As for shapes - I like circles a lot since the papers and photos are square, plus tabs, tags, banner flags

as I work on getting a little bit better at clusters, I'm finding it easier to use some of the more random icons...thinking of them as their colour more than their shape seems to be the key for me. I still find clusters really hard though.

I know I am too matchy matchy and that's why I can't use people icons because if they don't look like the people in my pictures (and they rarely do) I won't use them. Same goes for cats (I don't want to use a white cat icon with pictures of my gray cat). That's why I like having a cutting machine to make things that match my pictures, you would think that would stop me from buying ephemera packs but I still often do and then only use half of the package if I am lucky.
As stated above hearts and stars are easy for me to use. Also flowers, leaves, squares, circles, anything with scallops (love scallops).

This is why I rarely buy themed collections. I might like a set of nature embellishments but I’m not going to use the tent, campfire, or the backpack . I figure if I can use 2/3 of a set I’m good.
I don’t like when the company throws in some rando icon like a taco, sloth, mustache, pickup truck full of whatever. I simply don’t use them. Also rarely use cameras, clocks, bicycles, and flag banners. I am not looking forward to getting mushrooms with my sticker sheets. Mushrooms seem to be on trend.
I’m ok with the usual hearts flowers, stars, balloons, sometimes bows.

The thread about empty clothes was mine, so obviously people-less clothes are hard for me to use...
furniture vintage cars vintage people basically vintage anything... palm trees and tropical icons (there are no flamingos or coconuts on the beaches in the PNW...) seed packet images (and I garden...) goals and nets that come in sports themed stuff. They are always either facing the wrong way, or an awkward shape wildlife (bears, skunks, raccoons etc) on my camping layouts luggage The Eiffel Tower (as I have never been to France)
things that are easy: hearts stars circles soccer and tennis balls food (except the chicken on a sheep standing on a cow) birthday balloons and cakes trees music notes sun/clouds/weathery stuff cameras leaves

I am not looking forward to getting mushrooms with my sticker sheets. Mushrooms seem to be on trend. Back when you had to use cartridges with your Cricut I used to study the images on the cartridges before buying to see which ones I would get the most use out of. Even back then I commented that there seemed to be mushrooms on every Cricut cartridge and I was overloaded with them already. So I feel you on the mushrooms. After Stormy Daniels described the private part of a certain orange man that also has turned me off on using certain mushrooms on my pages.

None; I prefer the versatile, non-wonky/symmetrical/geometric icons (e.g. stars, sparkles, asterisks, hearts, arrows).

The thread about empty clothes was mine, so obviously people-less clothes are hard for me to use... furniture vintage cars vintage people basically vintage anything... I don't mind vintage, but that is part of my house decorating style- especially mid-century modern. But some of the stuff is hard to use.palm trees and tropical icons (there are no flamingos or coconuts on the beaches in the PNW...) Yep. My beach is in Delaware. No palm trees. There is never enough northern beach lines. I do go to luau parties, the zoo, and drink pina coladas, so I have used some of the icons, though. I'm always looking for an occasion to get those out of my stash.seed packet images (and I garden...) I love those. I haven't used them yet, but I seem to be drawn to them.goals and nets that come in sports themed stuff. They are always either facing the wrong way, or an awkward shape wildlife (bears, skunks, raccoons etc) on my camping layouts I love wildlife. I use the metro parks a lot so I'm always seeing critters. Works for zoo layouts, too.luggage The Eiffel Tower (as I have never been to France) Yep. So overused. things that are easy: hearts stars circles soccer and tennis balls For me, basketballs, baseballs, and footballs. Even when it isn't a sports page, my kiddo is always wearing a jersey.food (except the chicken on a sheep standing on a cow) Ha! Yep, that one is bizarre. birthday balloons and cakes trees music notes Yep. Band kid, guitar player, and record collectors in the family. Music notes will definitely draw me to a collection.sun/clouds/weathery stuff Suns and clouds are easy. I don't think I've ever used rain, boots, or umbrellas.cameras leaves

One would think that’s where you could use the classic car icon. But no, none of them matched lol. I used same 4 colors thru out and stripes and here & there gears, tools etc. the only place I could have used a classic car icon was the few pictures at a car meet. But the colors clashed so bad I didn’t buy it. Classic cars, imo, are so specific that it’s hard to use.

Right now I find weather icons extremely easy to use because I’m doing my planner. I also frequently use seasonal icons like spring, summer, fall, winter etc I use those in the edges if the calendar pages.
Up til my dog died I used pup & paw icons all the time. Now not so much but I still see my nieces pup & can use the paw for my DDs cat

I’m a literal scrapbooker. I can’t bring myself to use icons that are not relevant to my subject in some way.
When we travel to Michigan,I visit lots of small towns and festivals. This gives me lots of opportunities for pick up trucks, storefronts, Lemonade stands and occasional bikes with flowers. At the farmhouse and along the country roads there are fruit and flower stands and occasional critters - goats, squirrels, cows, pigs, raccoons and even llama. No hedgehogs or zebras.
Our life in the city makes the random icons nearly impossible.
It also strikes me that in an actual 50-year-old farmhouse, we don’t have many “farmhouse” iconic items. Go figure.

I like the idea of unique icons but don't generally use them. Owls, llamas, hot air balloons, sunglasses, etc. etc. etc. are just not my vibe. I'm a basic 13yo teenage girl on the inside so my pages are full of hearts, stars, rainbows, flowers, unicorns, and butterflies.

Feeling very seen reading this thread 😂 Everyone has already pointed out so many of mine. I'm a literal scrapbooker and just not a fan of icons that don't make sense next to photos of modern day, regular life. Also can't do cutesy, nor icons that include trite phrases on them, like if there was a record player that said "turn it up!" or a baseball with "play ball!" or whatever. I have tossed multiple embellishment packs and now rarely buy them. Versatile modern icons all the way- especially geometrics, shapes, abstracts (paint brush strokes etc).

Hard to use/ Not a fan of feathers (sorry, I know some of you like them) mushrooms furniture food (except for baking utensils and cakes, cupcakes, cookie etc) retro anything but especially signs, record players, cassette players etc typewriters skateboards glasses
Easy to use/ Love hearts stars arrows cameras sun/clouds outdoors - hiking, camping etc snowflakes leaves
Can use but only on specific layouts. I tend to be really literal and can't just add a random taco to any page. Bicycles hot air balloons school supplies - crayons, colored pencils, backpacks etc. but I wish manufacturers would update these collections and include fewer schoolhouses, owls, lockers etc

For scrapbooking I struggle with almost everything that isn't geometric or weather related. I have never really liked putting a sticker or die cut of a thing that's in the photo next to the photo (like a bike sticker with a photo of a bike). I have a minimalist scrapping style - photo heavy photo books - but luckily for me I can use all many of random things on my cards, especially if I can think of a pun to go with. I'm happy to use a hot air balloon with a smily face or a purple mushroom or pair of retro roller skates on a cheerful hello or birthday card.
Furniture and clothing items are more challenging, and small die cuts.
