HAHA.. page 3.. picture of the 'puke' bowl... this was on my FB page this morning.. started cracking up. It's EXACTLY what I have.
------------------ the puke bowl?
I have never told anyone this before.. but honestly never thought about it either. Growing up, there was 'the' bowl.. the popcorn bowl. When you were sick the popcorn bowl became the puke bowl. WHY? I have no idea. It never grossed me out either.. I know my mom cleaned everything thoroughly. It was a traditional yellow Tupperware bowl. The second biggest bowl in a nesting set.
I did the same thing, same kind of bowl with my family. Never thought about it twice. THEN twice in the last few weeks I have seen talk about the puke/popcorn bowl.. Guess I am not alone. Tons of comments saying the same thing. I was SHOCKED. My private little thing was a thing??
Now the bowl never was really used for company or anything like that. Just the family bowl. Both generations. Also in my sister's house.
The WHOLE thing started on a video on FB... someone had thrifted an ashtray and gave 10 uses for how to repurpose an ashtray.. One of the purposes was to hold your toothbrush... NOW that grossed me out to no end. Something that held cancer sticks now used to hold your toothbrush and/or toothbrush supplies? PUKE.. then that is how it turned into the puke/popcorn bucket thing.
That's my dirty little secret.. do you have one?

We had no bowl for puke--unless you count the toilet bowl.

Nope, I tried though. My daughter refused to use the popcorn bowl as a puke bucket, said she’d never eat out of it again. I have two perfect popcorn bowls so I wasn’t going to test it.

We used a large pot as the puke bucket. I have thought about it occasionally since having my own kids and don't know why we did that. A garbage can would have sufficed. We have a puke bucket from the hospital or doctors office when someone was sick. We either used that, the garbage can, or just the toilet. But honestly, we haven't had many stomach bugs for several years, thank goodness.

Ha ha. We had a puke pan. It was the blue, speckled enamel, small roasting pan. Although, none of us remember anyone ever actually using it. I would put it on the floor, very near their beds when they were sick. ( my 3 children ). We do laugh about *the puke pan* 40 years later. Apparently, a lot of families had one. And you’re right, it was never talked about.

We used a plastic trash basket as God intended. I cannot imagine ever eating out of a popcorn bowl that was used as a puke bowl. I am not normally squeamish and will eat stuff that has been on the floor, let my dog lick my face (only the one who doesn't eat poop), and will walk barefoot through a plane. I actually don't do that one anymore because I have been told it is super gross. Those things don't bother me and I really feel like getting a good healthy dose of germs daily keeps me from getting sick. But puke has a penetrating smell that I would forever remember.
ETA: I cannot remember the last time I puked. It has to be at least 25 years ago. Maybe even longer.

No
This is so gross
I cannot imagine puking in a bowl or pot and then also using it for food, no matter how much it’s been washed in between
Just no

We have a puke bowl that used to be used for other purposes. I havent used it for anything else in a long time.
Obviously the toilet is the first choice, but when things are happening at both ends, it's best to sit on the toilet and puke into something else.

No, it was either the toilet, or a bucket.

Yep, and it was the same yellow Tupperware bowl you describe. It was also the bread bowl, that my mom used to raise a double batch of bread.

I honestly don't remember what was used growing up but I used a plastic dish pan (that was NOT used for washing dishes) as the designated bedside receptacle if someone wasn't feeling well and there was the possibility they might not make it to the toilet to vomit there.

Nope. My mum would not have entertained that, we had to use the toilet and I can't remember ever not making it.

Toilet only for puking. Never heard of such a thing. I know if it goes in the dishwasher it is thoroughly cleaned and sanitized, but still, no.

Ha! I had to pick DS up from his girlfriend's house yesterday as he was sick (turns out it was COVID) and I couldn't find a bucket to take in the car with me. I grabbed an enamel camping pot with a lid, but DSO told me not to be silly, go find a bucket!

We had the green version of the yellow Tupperware bowl.
In my house now, I have a hot pink "tiki" trash can that is the puke bucket. In fact, I have a few. LOL. In the car, I have barf bags from the doctor's office in the glove box.

We use the toilet and if its a both ends situation then the trash can next to the toilet...
I did use an ice cream bucket when the kids were smaller but it was not washed out... just trashed when done..
Did not use the popcorn bowl... our popcorn bowl is a blue green Tupperware bowl

Ew...no. But, our popcorn bowl was a brown paper grocery bag! I'll have to ask my mother why she did that. Each of us kids would then scoop out our own with a cereal bowl.

Ew. Ew. Ew. No!
We had bathroom trash cans and mom would line it with a small trash bag to use by the bed in case we couldn't make it to the bathroom when little.

I don’t remember ever having a bowl or even a trash can to puke in growing up, we always just aimed for the toilet which is what we do now. The few times DD was sick when she was little, I would put a wastebasket with a plastic bag lining it next to her bed but she never had to use it. The last time I got sick was right before I had my gallbladder out in 2019. It had been a really long time before that.
ETA: Our popcorn bowl is this big heavy ceramic bowl that says POPCORN on the side that our neighbors gave us after watching their dogs for a week, but honestly we never use it for popcorn. I don’t think we’ve ever used it. We usually dump microwave popcorn from a bag into a microwave Tupperware bowl.

Like 950nancy and pantsonfire, when I was growing up we used a small trash can with a plastic liner for the side of the bed if we couldn't make it to the bathroom to use the toilet for vomiting. And if it was a "both ends" situation, we would use the small bathroom trash can while sitting there. (My mom used an extra trash can as the side-of-the-bed puke receptacle, I think it was the one she usually kept in the laundry room, never a bathroom trash can in case it was needed there.) I did the same thing when my kids were little - we had one or two small trash cans that could easily be lined with a plastic liner and repurposed temporarily as designated beside-the-bed receptacles. But it was stressed to the kids that they needed to try their best to make it to the bathroom and vomit into the toilet....I don't even wanna talk about one of my dear children who thought the bathroom sink was a better choice ( easier? more sanitary? I have no idea what went on in that little brain to come to that conclusion...?!). No, just NO. Because that *&^$% does not go down the sink, it has to be scooped out. Or the other child who only thought they could make it to the bathroom (hint: they were wrong) and left a trail of puddles. NO!!! So, no popcorn puke bowl in my house either! Ewww.

Yes! I know I have mentioned this here before, but my mom had one of the typical Pyrex bowl sets that every mom on the block had. The nesting set with the multiple colors, the largest bowl being yellow. Mom used that yellow bowl to make all of my favorite things. She taught me how to make a pie crust with that bowl. All cookies were made from dough that was mixed in that yellow bowl.
When I married and got my own kitchen, there were no cute or pretty bowl sets that appealed to me so I started hunting at antique stores for Mom’s yellow bowl. I didn’t even care about the other colors. When I finally found an antique store that had two of them, I called my sister to see if she wanted me to pick up the other yellow bowl for her. She wasn’t understanding what bowl I had found that I was so excited about.
I described the bowl and reminded her that Mom made everything yummy throughout our entire childhood in that bowl. She finally said, “do you mean the vomit bowl?” I had forgotten about that. Yes, Mom did put that bowl on a TV tray next to the couch when we were sick. I never actually vomited in it myself so I didn’t associate it as the vomit bowl. For me it was the everything delicious bowl. I bought one for myself and my sister passed. I still have mine (at least it was unbroken and packed up in California) I am opening a lot of boxes with broken things inside so I can’t be sure that I still have my well-loved yellow bowl.

Absolutely not! A small plastic lined trash can by the bedside was/is appropriate! The kids and grownups would not ever be asked to eat from a bowl that was used for puked! I would gag at the thought of doing so! Just no!

Ours was an actual small plastic bucket from the laundry room. In between times it was used for cleaning, such as to hold hot water when washing the car, or to soak an item of clothing.
Even though technically, it would be perfectly clean after a wash, mentally it would put me off eating out of the same bowl I once vomited in.

As a little kid (under ten), we had a large plastic bowl for vomiting into, but that was it's only use. Never eaten from.
