I was just reading Reddit and there was a picture and description of this device, intended to be inserted in a woman like a tampon. It is a soft latex with razor sharp teeth embedded all around the interior surface designed to dig into a man’s penis during a rape. It would remain buried into the male when he withdrew from the female and is designed to have to be removed at a hospital, hopefully by a doctor that contacts the police. The device was set to go into production, but has not been because of the fear that this would enrage the male and provoke him to further harm the woman. I can see that, but I can also see the pain and confusion brought by finding this stuck on you, and the instinctive attempt to remove it immediately would hopefully give the woman time to make an escape. What do you think? After I saw this on Reddit, I googled it to learn more. That took me to this Wikipedia page where the item has been renamed due to an existing RAPEX name being used for identifying dangerous nonfood health hazards. The product was renamed RAPE-aXe. This Wikipedia page also describes a couple of other rape deterrent ideas. Do you think the possibility of catching a rapist would make it worth the possibility of further putting the woman in more danger? I can also imagine there would be doctors who would remove it without reporting it for a large fee. I have heard of a nail polish that changes color if placed in a drink laced with a date rape drug. I don’t know if that was actually a real product or just something I saw on some TV show. What are your thoughts on this RAPE-aXe device? Do you have any ideas yourself? Hell no.
A. The woman is still raped. The man has to penetrate to be injured. B. The chance that the man who is already violent enough to rape escalates to murder because she injures him in that way feels far too high. C. It's deranged to think that women should wear weapons in their vaginas to protect themselves. Talk about dystopian. Just no.

How would this be feasible for a woman? She’d have to have this thing inside her 24 / 7. What about when she chose to have sex? She’d have to remove it, reinsert it, etc.
I don’t think something like this would be realistic

Talk to me when there is a device to stop a male from believing that a women is his property even when she says no, stops a male from acting on his gross, intrusive thoughts, stops a male from being a sick asshole, stops a male from being a freaking dick.
Just make it stop.
It is NOT on us women to stop it.
It is on the MEN. Period.

This has to be a horrific April 1st joke. There is no way this could be a real product. Please no.

I would imagine this would fall under "a booby trap causing serious injury", and those are illegal in most states.

It is still a patriarchy and I’m positive that a woman would get sued, if not charged criminally for that. I mean there have been fuckers who have sued a women who punched them to defend herself so I can only imagine their response with this

Better idea - how about every male past puberty is required to wear a chastity belt type contraption every time he leaves the house?
Women are not responsible for rapes.

No, just no! How about a man wear a contraption on his penis all the time so he won't rape. It's beyond time for women to stop bearing the brunt of trying to prevent being raped!

Sounds to me like a lawsuit waiting for an accidental injury to the person using it as a defense mechanism. If the blades are razor sharp how is the silicone it’s embedded into not going to get shredded on the opposite side? I’d be most worried about injuring myself with something like that. I can barely even get eye drops into my own eye without incident, I sure as hell wouldn’t attempt using something like that.
I’m on the bench of it’s not a woman’s issue to solve. Men/boys need to just stop being assholes. I do think there’s some hope though, since not all men/boys behave badly. My DH has quite a few male friends who are 5-15 years older than he is (he’s mid 50’s). He has called various ones out on several occasions for being creepy and stalkerish, asking how would they like it if some strange rando treated their wives or daughters or moms that way? He has said it really changes his opinion about some of these guys.
I think it’s going to take more men standing up and calling each other out on things like that and not just tolerating the bad behavior or laughing it off as boys being boys because that’s not what this is. What women can do is teach their boys to be better humans when they’re young, and in some cases that might mean educating their kid’s dads to step up and be better role models. Stop giving boys a pass just because, “Oh, they’re BOYS.” No. Just no. Rein that shit in when they’re young.

We're supposed to walk around with razors in our vaginas so guys don't behave badly? Then if they work, we get the $#it beaten out of us. What's next, a pair of portable clippers so we can just go all Lorena Bobbit on them? Not a bad idea, actually. I think it’s going to take more men standing up and calling each other out on things like that and not just tolerating the bad behavior or laughing it off as boys being boys because that’s not what this is. A nice idea, but there's too much bad behavior, not necessarily rape but mistreatment of women, that gets laughed off as "boys being boys," even by moms, so I'm not optimistic. Even school administrators put the onus on girls by strict dress codes so the boys "won't get distracted." Let's not even discuss access to porn or misogynistic video games and song lyrics. I know I sound like a prude and fair enough.

Good grief. My thoughts are absolutely NO. It's not like you can predict when you are going to be assaulted and raped, so women would have to have a weapon shoved up their vagina 24/7?? Maybe if there were actually laws and judges who gave out proper justice to rapists...instead of saying stupid shit like "I don't want to ruin this young man's life" but nope, that will not happen.

I know I sound like a prude and fair enough. FWIW, I did add that women need to start holding their kids to higher standards. My own sister would let her son do stupid stuff that she wouldn’t have put up with from her daughters (but she also has a jerk of a DH who treats her like crap and she has tolerated that too for 40+ years, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯). I have neighbors with sons who pull all kinds of crap too, and she says, “Well, they’re boys and boys do that kind of stuff.” Um NO, my DD has had many male friends who do NOT behave like that so it is possible to raise civilized male children to not act like assholes. My middle school kid has a lot of male friends and honestly, I do see some improvement compared to when I was her age and in my teens. I think having a daughter (and a very outspoken wife) has helped a lot to educate my own DH, and he absolutely calls out his friends when they treat women inappropriately. Every bit of pushback helps.

From the Wikipedia page "If an attacker were to attempt vaginal rape, his penis would enter the latex sheath and be snagged by the barbs, causing the attacker excruciating pain during withdrawal and giving the victim time to escape."
If, big if, it could work that way sure but what are the chances the victim would have time to escape and he wouldn't kill her?
If, again big if, it worked and a victim could have time to escape what are women supposed to do wear this 24/7? Rape doesn't just happen at night to girls who party.
Says it's been around since 2005.

Aside from all the other excellent points, I could 100% see a woman being charged for injuring the rapist in some areas of the country. I’m sure some asshole prosecutor would find some way to twist it. Not that the charges would stick, but that would still be more bullshit bad behavior from men that a woman would have to deal with.

I can't imagine actually using a device like this, but I guess maybe if there was enough fear that someone might be wearing one, it could be a deterrent? I don't know. Doesn't really seem feasible.

No, this was not an April Fools joke, at least I don’t think it was. It was invented by a woman with an eye toward all of the rapes in South Africa. Apparently she was working with a woman who had been raped who remarked “if only I had teeth down there” and it gave her the idea to invent this. It never went into production, nor did any of the other products. While there might be a few women who were able to escape, I think there would be more that would be beaten or murdered. And I would fear that even if the woman escaped at that point, the guy knows who she is and would come after her to do great bodily harm another day. I am old. I went to school during the era where girls were mandated to wear dresses every day except for once a month they allowed a “pants day” where girls could wear pants, preferably a pantsuit, and we had to kneel down for the dean of girls to check the dress length. Your skirt had to touch the floor in front of your knees or you were sent home to change. I remember our recess/PE teacher telling us that we needed to dress modestly and to do a self check on our skirt length before leaving home because the boys could be so easily tempted. Tempted to do what? I honestly had no clue. I went home and talked to my parents about the statement after they saw me dutifully kneeling to check my skirt length the following morning. I was still in elementary school when this was said and I asked my mom what the boys would be tempted to do if our skirt didn’t touch the floor. We hadn’t discussed sex yet and I had no idea. Mom decided if they were saying this in elementary school to the little girls, she needed to have “the talk” earlier than she planned. Mom wanted to know if the school had meetings with the boys about appropriate behavior instead of having rules for the girls in how to dress so we didn’t tempt the boys. I didn’t know the answer to that but sensed Mom was irritated that the girls had these rules. Boys and girls were kept so separated back then. I had to smile at the idea that epeanymous posted about boys wearing a cage device that girls could choose to unlock. Yeah, I know it was a joke, but could you imagine the uproar such a thing would cause?
