I have an old Silhouette SD that I haven’t used in over 5 years. I don’t even know if I can use it on my new Mac (M2), but I do have an older Intel MacBook that I can use. Should I donate the machine since I don’t have plans to use it in the near future? Is it too obsolete? I can’t even think of a project I would need it for. But what about all the cut files I have. Are they transferable in anyway to use on say a Cricut machine?

I don’t know if it is completely obsolete. Since Silhouette now has the Portrait in that size, and the Silhouette SD is so outdated, I am guessing that it may not work with newer versions of the Silhouette software. And if you wanted to purchase newer files, they would probably need the newer software to cut.
Can you use the designs with Cricut software? If you pay a small additional cost to get the SVG version of the files, yes, you can. Silhouette does play nicely with others by offering SVG versions. However, if any of the files have been discontinued, the SVG version wouldn’t be available.

I have an SD that is still going strong. I keep threatening to update to a newer model for more features, but it keeps plugging along. IIRC, I can't update the software anymore for newer features, but it does update the security features and I can still buy files.
You keep all of your cut files in your account forever and you can transfer them from one device to another. You likely have the last version of the Silhouette software on your computer and can pull that up if you just transferred files from your old device to your new device. You can update the software from there. If you download (or update) the new software, but sure that you have your actual SD chosen vs a newer model.
If you no longer use it or want it, I'd put it on a free site. A school or library is highly unlikely to want the old technology. But a home crafter or teen may be willing to try it out. You can also connect them sequentially if you have a home business and it could be used for that.

It does say on the website that Silhouette Studio is compatible with the SD. It can't hurt to download the software and connect your silhouette (you may need to get an adapter - USB to USB-c). I have an M1 Mac and I use an adapter to connect my original Portrait to my Mac.

Unless something has changed, you can download previous iterations of the software so you should be able to get one that is compatible with the SD and the computer you run it on. Good luck!
