Centered in the Tri-State area--magnitude 4.8 in NJ. I'm such a dope, I thought it was Orla playing really roughly on the front porch . Felt also in RI

All I saw were the headlines, no details; I'm originally from NJ outside of Philly.

I remember my first earthquake!! It was around 1988-89 and just moved to California. I got up in the middle of the night to go pee and walking back to my bed the whole room started shaking. Talk about someone 1/2 awake in the middle of the night and all of a sudden everything is just shaking. I was screaming! My roommates woke up and we were all freaking out. lol... thankfully it stopped shortly thereafter but it sure did give us stories for years... we just moved there from Missouri.. pretty much no earthquakes. It is a WEIRD feeling isn't it?

Yep, that was crazy. It didn’t last long. I thought it was my washing machine because it needs to be balanced but DH and DS came downstairs to ask if I felt that. And the dog was like wtf was that?!?!

It was semi close to me, I thought something exploded in my basement, went running down but everything was fine could see house shake above me. Nothing at all like the 2011 quake that one rolled thru you could feel the roll across the floor/ground and there wasn’t much noise. This one was very violent and loud.

Yes, for those of us who don't experience earthquakes it is very odd. We had one here in the DC area some years ago and I remember just standing there thinking what the heck? And my dog leaped up with her ears flat. I'm sure that people who know earthquakes will immediately think earthquake when one starts, but the rest of us no... I was thinking explosion, thunder, construction accident, fighter jet, etc. lol

Felt it in Queens. Bird started screeching before I felt anything. I thought my building was collapsing, which happens more often in NYC than an earthquake.

I really thought explosion in my basement

Wow! What is going on? We had a small one in our area of Northern California the other night and I still get surprised. DD says it's the solar activity before the eclipse. She follows this stuff but I don't know what to think, especially since there is seismic activity all the time around the world. Hope everyone and their property are ok.

Here in south Jersey too. I would say like 15 second duration, long enough for me to register what was happening. One of my bff lives in Lebanon, but isn't there right now. My brother in north Jersey, one of his neighbors has window damage. Other than that, ppl at the Jersey shore felt it, NYC, and out on Long Island too.
I keep bracing myself if there is more?!
I do remember the one we had a few years back when the Washington memorial was damaged.

That is a good sized shake. Hope everyone is ok!
Sometimes people out here don’t even know if it is a quake or not. We had a good “debate” on ND a few weeks ago if it was a quake or Camp Pendleton doing bombing practice.

We had a good “debate” on ND a few weeks ago if it was a quake or Camp Pendleton doing bombing practice. Living in so cal, earthquakes are never something you get used to. But we also play this game, a lot of ‘did you feel that?’ And then immediately looking up the geological site to confirm if it was an earthquake. Then the news comes on and says this could be a foreshock…. Then the next few hours after a big one are a bit nerve wracking.

So scary for us East Coast dwellers who rarely experience earthquakes. Eastern Long Island experienced it for about 15 seconds. No aftershocks here so far.

The scary part about it being on the east coast are all the old brick buildings that are probably not reinforced.

Over 20 years ago, the day we brough DD hone from the hospital, our families were here. We felt something. Some thought it was the train, but the train doesn't shake like that. Found out later it was 5.4 about 90 minutes NW of here
Last fall there was a 5.6 about 90 minutes NE from here. I felt it a bit, and a few after shocks, those felt almost like a flutter in my chest.
I can't imagine what a big one, or being closer to the centre would feel like.

We felt it here in the eastern part of PA. My classroom was shaking and we couldn’t figure out what was happening. Then I got a text from DS saying, “hey, did you just feel that earthquake?”

It was the first time I've felt an earthquake, I was so scared! Thankfully we're all okay, but my whole team was freaked out this morning. We work remotely so our boss did a mass-email check in.

Where people felt that quake.. Newark NJ four houses evacuated, one house leaning against another, chimney crumbling. Three of the houses have been condemned. The first leaned into the second and it leaned into the third. The fourth house is damaged, they are being allowed to enter ... Not sure if they can tonight or not.
