I'm wanting to get rid of my complete Stampin' Up ink pad collection and replace it with something new. There are so many choices and I'm not sure which way to go so I'm hoping y'all can tell me which ones you have and why you love them. Right now I have full size pads so I think I'd like to stay with that size.
I mainly make cards and would love a good color collection so please help a pea out!

I love both of the distress and oxide ink pads. I like how they react to water.

If you are into layering stamp sets or ink blending and like the light, medium & dark shades of a color I'd recommend Pink Fresh Studio or Altenew. I have their ink cubes and love their color families.
If you are mainly into stand alone colors & stamping, I'd recommend Gina K or Concord & 9th. I have the Gina K full size ink pads and love them. I have the Concord & 9th ink cubes and a couple full size pads too. Concord & 9th are foam pads but I really like the way they stamp. While neither of these companies have a true light/medium/dark color family, they do have colors that work together.

I have a ton of the TH pads and they work well and for yearssssssss. I don't stamp a ton, so my recommendation isn't the most thorough.

Memento (though I have the Dew Drops and not full-size) and Versafine Clair (mostly for sentiments) which only come in full-size. I love the crispness and vibrancy.

Right now I have full size pads so I think I'd like to stay with that size. I mainly make cards and would love a good color collection so please help a pea out! I think it really really depends on what you want to do. I know you said you mainly make cards, but are you into mixed media cards? Clean and simple cards? A lot of words and sentiments cards? I don't consider myself an expert by any stretch, but different inks do different things...I love mixed media, blending ink, spritzing with water and stamping in color, so the Distress Oxides are great for me and I love them. Plus I love the colors. I don't have them all, but I do have about 40. I also have about 40 regular Distress, as I had those before oxides came out. For sentiments and crisp images, and watercoloring images, I love Versafine Clair. I have 6 of those. I also have some Hero Arts Unicorn White, but I'd like to find another White. I don't really love that one. I wanted some small cubes so I bought some inexpensive Hero Arts cubes, they are okay, some dried out very fast. I'd like to try some Catherine Pooler or Altenew as I like the idea of color families. Final thoughts are that ink is not a one size fits all situation, but more taking a comprehensive look at what you want to do with your ink will tend to guide you. Hope that helps and you find what you need!

I love all the inks that Tsukineko makes (Imagine Crafts), full disclosure I was on their DT for three different terms. What is nice is that there are reinkers for all the current pads, so if you have a color you love then having the reinker is great! Some are dye based, others pigment based, and then there is StazOn. Lots of options!

Thank you everyone! I truly appreciate your responses and have made a list of the suggested inks. I plan on buying 1 ink pad from several different companies to try and see what I like. A few of you asked what I wanted to use the inks for and I realize that does matter. I have been stamping for over 20 years and have used SU inks almost exclusively and now I'm wanting to stretch my wings and find new stuff to play with, I love trying so many different techniques and hope to find a main line that is versatile enough to handle most things.
There's just so much out there it's so easy for me to get overwhelmed but I think my plan to buy a few to try will help.
Thanks again!

I exclusively scrapbook & use pigment inks (for basic stamping, stenciling, inking edges, & heat embossing), currently VersaFine Clair for fast-drying, non-splotchy/crisp images/words, & saturated/intense color (that is still embossable minutes later) & VersaMark for tone-on-tone stamping & embossing. HTH.

For colored inks I like Catherine Pooler - they stamp crisply and have rich colors but they can also be used for blending and water reactive techniques. Some people don’t like the foam pads though. If you watch Ardyth on YT she uses CP inks for all kinds of stenciling, direct to paper (instead of buying colored cs) and stamping.
I have mixed feelings about distress oxides - very easy to blend, yes, but I prefer the clear colors of regular distress (or CP inks) rather than the chalky look of oxides. They work on dark cs but that also means they cover up stamped lines if you stamp first then stencil. Sometimes I wish I hadn’t bought into the oxide craze, and other times I want more colors. Lol.

I love the Catherine Pooler line of inks. They are foam so you will need reinkers but I get near perfect stamping every single time I stamp and when I don't it's my fault or my ink pad was dryer than I though. The inks are crisp and there are two different lines. The Party line is bright, happy, gorgous and the Spa line is muted, softer, beautiful. I love them both.

I'll second, the thought it all depends what you want/like to do with inks.
I do mainly scrapbooking and I also really like Catherine Pooler inks. It takes maybe a time or two to get the feel that you only need to touch you stamp lightly to the pad to ink it. I too like how crisp and clean they stamp. She has a really good choice of colors, and I think the color wheels you can download to help you coordinate colors are pretty helpful and can give you ideas for colors you might not have used together. The other thing I really like its her mini sizes - bigger than 1" cube, but smaller than a full pad.
I've been ordering mine A Cherry On Top when they have one go their 20% off everything sales and that helps make them a little more budget friendly.

My go too for black is Versafine. I also have some basic colors of Distress Inks and Distress Oxides. As I've increased my card making, I've purchased more basic colors of Versafine Clair for sentiments.

I've just done this exact same thing 6 months ago. I sold all my SU! ink because I wasn't happy with it. The drying time, splotchy stamping and the images weren't crisp. I will say I stamp on scrapbooking pages and PL cards...rarely do I do cards anymore. So most of my stamping is text.
I decided to go with Gina K ink cubes for a couple of reasons. They stamp very well with clean crisp lines, dry quickly and have the felt pads. I do have a lot of oxides as well that I do use but those are a different animal altogether. Since I've gotten the new Gina K inks I've been reaching for my stamps more often and using all the colors. Some of my SU inks I hadn't even opened in 3 years. For me it was a good choice.

I usually get ink by Ranger. Along with their name brand they also market the Tim Holtz, Simon Hurley, Wendy Vecchi inks. But I do like the Altenew and Hero Arts small cube sets for layering.
i do want to try the Pinkfresh and Gina K inks though.

What is the quality of American Crafts ink pads? I have a quad in my ACOT cart because it matches a 4th of July paper pad. Reds are so hard to match, but if the quality isn’t there, I’ll pass on it.

I use Memento Tuxedo Black to stamp my images as I use alcohol markers to color.
For ink blending and stencils, I really like Simon Says Stamps Pawsitively Saturated Inks.

Pink Fresh for their color bundles with four different shades in each color palette.
Concord & 9th for their unique colors.
Versa Fine Clair Nocturne for stamping greetings/sentiments in black.
Lawn Fawn Jet Black for stamping if I'm coloring with Copics.

Concord and 9th hands down. They are my go-to and I have many brands. I have the complete, full size set and the cardstock to match as well. Wouldn’t trade these for anything.

This was such a great topic and discussion! Thanks kkrenn for starting it, I've learned a lot! As have I! And all this talk of inks really got me in the mood to learn to stencil so I just purchased a layered set along with some new to me ink to test out: a Pinkfresh quad in green, a Gina K in Coral and a Concord & 9th in Honeysuckle. Today I tested all of my inks and had to throw a couple dozen out. I have some Versafine, Momento, StazOn, Archival Distressed, pigmented, and many brands of chalk inks including Altenew, Ts$*#k* Dew Drops, SEI and ColorBox. I understand from use and tons of helpful pea info about the benefits of the first listed inks. But what is the difference between chalk and dye inks?

Chalk inks, like ColorBox or Tsukineko VersaMagic, are actually a special kind of pigment ink, not a dye ink at all.
I am not aware that Altenew makes a chalk ink, but maybe I've missed something.
"Dew Drops" are a size/shape of Tsukineko ink pads, similar to an ink cube, not a type of ink.

Thanks for the clarification on the Dew Drops and chalk ink! So is it just pigment ink that dries more quickly? What have you used chalk inks for? That’s the only thing different I noticed about the chalk inks yesterday, that they dried almost instantly as stamped images. But not when I edge the paper (looks at still stained hands).

Imagine, US distributor for Tsukineko products, has an absolutely awesome blog. A few weeks ago, they made a beautiful card using VersaMagic, their chalk ink, on vellum. Other than that, I'm not sure what chalk ink is specifically for. Way, way back, when I was much younger and astonishingly foolish and thought I was going to make my own wedding invitations, I bought Colorbox ink pads for the project, but I don't think I was aware that I was buying chalk inks.

Typing this out it sounds dumb but at the time it made sense to me LOL

I received some Catherine Pooler inks in my Hip Kit Club sale purchases and I really like them! I just ordered four more colors (Grass Skirt, Lime Rickey, On The Lake, and Hoodie) and they are prettier in person than on my computer screen. Grass Skirt is a bit bright but I think it will go nicely with several collections I’m working with right now.

The biggest requirement for ink ads for me is that they have a reinker available as I like a juicy ink pad!
