I’m not a huge fan of Ulta, I prefer Sephora.
But I mentioned on the Sephora thread that I trek to Ulta to buy The Ordinary products because the sale applies to them at Ulta whereas they are excluded from the sale at Sephora.
Anyway, my son wanted to shop for perfume while we had the 20% off entire purchase and ALL of the testers and perfumes are now locked up at my Ulta! It’s in a nice area, a stand alone, not inside a mall. You have to hunt down an employee and get her to unlock each individual fragrance you want to try, then ask her to go to the back and see if there are any in stock if you want to buy one, and then they hold it at the front desk. It was annoying to not know what was in stock at the same time you were trying to make a selection. It was a PITA as we had to walk all over the store trying to flag down an employee who of course was also trying to help other people.
I’ve seen the crazy clear out the fragrance section theft videos, so I understand why they feel the need to do this, but it made shopping SO difficult.
I know tons of sores are locking stuff up now (although none of the targets in our area are, thank goodness, and knock on something) and stores are actively encouraging you to shop online instead.
But there are some things that I don’t understand how you can shop for online and perfume is one of them.
Rant over.

I try to order online from them when I can, but after this last experience, I'm not sure I will shop at Ulta in the future. I ordered some Urban Decay eyelid primer which has a doe foot applicator. When I tried to open, I had to really struggle to pull the applicator out of the tube. When I got it out, it was completely folded in on itself. I am strongly suspicious that this was an open product. At least their returns are fairly easy.

I ordered a line of OPI nail polishes and they arrived in an envelope with no padding or wrapping or anything. All of the bottles were smashed to bits and there was glass and polish everywhere. I just stuck the whole thing in a plastic bag, drove to Ulta and told them I needed all my money back (I refused to reach into the package to get the receipt). They weren’t at all surprised and said this is a very common occurrence with packages. As I mentioned, I really dislike Ulta.

The locked up stuff is so annoying. I get it. But it is annoying. I feel bad that I have to get stuff from various sections so I try to have the specific item all scoped out before I call them so we can go through the aisles in an orderly fashion and I know exactly which item I need. I try to use online pickup as much as possible for that stuff, but for a new fragrance or scented item that is impossible.

Yuck. They haven’t done that here.
I shop at both because they each carry some things I like that the other doesn’t. Ulta has better rewards but Sephora has more brands I like. I was super irritated to discover that the 20% coupon Ulta has that runs against the Sephora sale is single use (unlike the Sephora sale, which applies to all purchases in the sale period). I placed a pick up order with Ulta yesterday, but three things I ordered that showed as available online at my store were canceled from my order because they were out of stock. I checked when I got to the store and the three items were all available in different sizes so I bought them - but couldn’t use the discount again because it had been applied to the pick up items. Grrrr

My daughter worked at an Ulta and she was working when they were robbed once. Said they can't do anything and have to let them take it. This was about 1.5 years ago, so I'm sure before they started locking them up.

I worked in banking and the policy was explicitly to not try to do anything to stop a robbery. Give them what they want and get them out of the bank as quickly as possible (and lock the doors behind them). Far safer for employees and customers. People could and did get fired for trying to be heroes. It’s more dangerous for everyone.

Grrrr I also had that problem. A couple of things I needed were out of stock and was super annoyed I could only use the coupon either online or in store and only once. Neither the store nor online had everything available to purchase as one transaction. I find Sephora’s rewards better (the $100 off at 2500 points, in particular, and especially since you can earn points for free with all the side quests online).

I tend to shop at Ulta during their 21 days of beauty events. Now that they have changed that event, that may change. And I may end up shopping at Sephora now. But I refuse to hunt down an employee for a locked up item. I would rather order online.

I was annoyed the last time I was at Ulta. I was interested in a new dark spot "brightening" product, but wanted to test it to make sure it didn't irritate my skin. The tester was missing from its spot in the product display. When I finally found a sales person, she couldn't find the tester, but said that I could return it after I tried it. So, after I waited in a long line at the register, the clerk told me I had to join their loyalty club in order to be eligible to return the product. I didn't want to waste more time signing up because I rarely shop there and prefer Sephora.

I noticed the other day that they locked up the fragrances, but they still had a tester out for everything though. I don't know that they will sell as much without at least testers. I wouldn't buy a fragrance without testing it and I am not waiting around for someone to unlock individual fragrances. I will go somewhere else or order samplers.
Another store I go to that has testers has them attached to the shelf. I would think that Ulta would at least do that?

My DD works at Ulta in a nice area and they did not have their perfumes locked up. Guess what...the thieves know that and drive to where they are not locked up... and just walk in and casually load them all up and then walk out. So now they are locked up.
