Reading the thread on being early, got me to thinking about being late and texting to notify the person you are running late. In California, you cannot text while driving, even when stopped at a red light. Would you still try to text the person to let them know. even if texting is illegal?
I have been in that situation before, late due to traffic. I just kept driving and apologized when I finally got to my destination. I just assume it will take too much time to find a place to park and text back, rather than just keep on driving. If a text seems urgent, I'll pull over somewhere and park. I've never been a drive-and-text person, I am not coordinated enough. Lol! Before smartphones, one GF could send a text so fast on a phone with a numeric keypad, all without looking. She knew where the keys were and how many clicks for each letter. It was kind of amazing to watch her. One time a GF was upset I didn't respond back to her text while I was driving. She knew I was driving and on my way to meet her. I wasn't late, but she wanted to know where I was and how soon I will arrive. When I parked, I texted back "I am here." LOL!

I do use CarPlay now and then and use Siri to send a quick text if running late or to do a quick reply, but very very infrequently. I would rather pull over and deal with it if I need to immediately.

I have an Apple watch, and if it goes off I'll glance at it to see whose texting while at a light, and I can select some premade replies. My kids are trained to know if they get some strange answer to "are you going to pick me up?" I'm on the way. None of that involves touching my phone.
If I need to send a text, I usually make whoever is in the car with me do it.

I use CarPlay to send and “read” text messages. Completely hands-free as it should be.

No need anymore. I listen to the text from my car screen. If I feel like replying right away I use Google Assistant or the pretyped options, or I would just call the person.
I wouldn't text while city driving, easier on the highway where there is very little traffic. Before my car was equipped I would look but not reply, unless I was calling back.

I am another one who dictates a text when driving, so yes, I text, but I don’t TEXT.

I voted No, because I don't do it when the car is moving. But I might when I'm parked in a drive-thru queue, or waiting in stationary traffic. If I'm driving and see something that someone else should know, eg. telling DH to avoid an area because of an accident, then I'll use Siri.

No. Now I just tell my car to text since I just hit a button on my steering wheel. Prior to that capability I would pull over if needed. There is nothing so urgent I need to respond to or say while driving that I need to look at my phone. What could I possibly need to tell someone that couldn't wait until I was where I was going? Too many other distracted drivers to pay attention to. I don't need to add to the problem.

I wouldn't while driving.
If I needed to text, I would pull over in a shopping center-business or to the side of a road, if it were safe to do so.

I pull over if it is more than a yes or no kind of thing.. and for those, I am using carplay so it is all hands free.

Before my car was equipped I would look but not reply, unless I was calling back. ahem, sorry for laughing. In my area there is never "very little traffic" on the highway. To answer the original question, no. And I've never dictated a text or used voice to make a phone call. I just listen to music on Spotify through my phone which is connected to the car's audio. Every once in awhile I might pull over to text something, like if I'm on the way to Costco and I forgot to check to see how much TP we have left, or something like that. I'll text whoever is home to ask.

I said yes - but there wasn’t an option for how I do it. I have Apple Car Play in my car so my phone connects to my car. I can ask Siri to text somebody and she does. She’ll read replies out as well.

I don't type them out but I do dictate them occasionally. This. But I did respond no because you seem to be asking if we physically type and drive. That I won’t do. In the days before voice texting, I’d have “I’m on my way” typed out on my phone. If a kid texted to ask when I was picking them up, I’d send it at a light. There were 13 lights between our house and the school. I was bound to hit one of them!

I’m in CA, it is illegal. When I am stopped at a light and know I need to deal with something I absolutely do but as soon as my foot is offf the brake the phone is down and I don’t touch it until I am fully stopped.

The few times I was running late to an appointment, I uses my hands free Bluetooth and called the person.
My phone is in my cross over body backpack when in the car. And away from me.
My life, my kids lives, dh's life, and people on the road lives matter. I have never texted and drove nor will I ever. I don't even do so at a stop sign or stop light.

I came home from my parent's last night, just before 9 pm, I met 2 vehicles in the 25 km of highway I took. Could easily drive a few minutes without meeting a vehicle, and on straight roads. Very very very low population density here.

I don’t consider myself to be a strong driver. Even with Apple car play and Siri, I don’t text. If I do drive, I’m usually with my young adult children and I feel compelled to be a good example.
