OK so I've decided that it is time for me to get my butt out there and start running again. I've been thinking about it for quite a while and well, my bipolar is about as controlled as it's going to be but I need some kind of goal in my life, to work toward something. Plus it's very clear to me that my new dog needs more exercise as she's a ball of energy and I was reading that goldendoodles actually make good running partners.
But I need some kind of podcast recommendations to tie to my running. In other words, I will only listen to it while I am running to help give me incentive. But I need something very specific. I need a podcast where episodes run 20-30 minutes. That's about all I can do at first. And second I need an established podcast that has somewhere in the neighborhood of 100-200 episodes already done. I don't want to have to wait a week for a new episode.
Some caveats, I don't do anything involving crime or topics that will give me any kind of anxiety like that would. And I don't watch TV or movies really so I can't have anything that involves watching anything or these types of pop culture references.
But I enjoy social science kinds of things or personal development. I have some podcasts I listen to regularly. So just to give you an idea of what kinds of things I like I'll tell you what I already listen to.
Not Your Average Runner with Jill Angie Losing 100 Pounds with Corinne Crabtree Style Masterclass with Judith Gaston Unfuck Your Brain with Kara Lowentheil Frugal Friends All It Takes is a Goal with Jon Acuff ADHD for Smart Ass Women A Slob Comes Clean with Dana White The Ezra Klein Show Radio Atlantic Unlocking Us with Brene Brown Maintenance Phase If Books Could Kill Old Fashioned on Purpose by Jill Winger We Can Do Hard Things Glennon Doyle Under the Influence with Jo Piazza
These are really my favorite podcasts. And it's funny because I really don't even follow influencers and I still enjoy Jo's commentary. (I do look up who she's talking about) And I'm not a homesteader but I enjoy Jill. I rarely have read the books profiled on If Books Could Kill but Michael Hobbes is so much fun. (And I do look up the Goodreads reviews of his chosen books) So the podcast doesn't even have to be related to my interests persay. Just be interesting. And fit within my 20-30 minute timeframe and have a good store of episodes already.
Any ideas?

They profile women in history, usually actual women but sometimes a woman from popular fiction. The episodes may be a longer than you are looking for, but they are very interesting. More lighthearted is Daughter Issues with Dave Smalley (comedian) where he tests his daughter on things that were popular in his youth to see if she knows what he is talking about.

Rich Roll
He’s a runner who went through some very hard times in his life, drugs, I believe and now interviews inspiring people on his show. He is plant based so some of them are about that. I used to listen to him a few years ago and really enjoyed what he and his guest had to say.

I second The History Chicks. They thoroughly research and their back and forth banter is amusing. You could always just listen to half of the podcast and save the second half for your next run.

Good for you for wanting tlget back at running. Good luck finding what you need, I don't have any suggestions. I'm finding the podcasts are getting longer and longer. Used to be 45 minutes was long. Now some are 90 mins up to 2 hours long!! Is there a cliff notes version please?

He finds him very inspiring.

Now some are 90 mins up to 2 hours long!! Is there a cliff notes version please? That's the problem with a lot of suggestions. I have ADHD. Asking me sit down and listen to something for two hours is torture. And running every other day will take me a week to get through some podcasts. That's just not very fun. I was hoping for short segment podcasts. I just looked up Rich Roll and his second latest podcast is 2 hr and 42 minutes long! This is like 2 weeks of running for beginners. I usually listen to podcasts while I shower and get ready and then while I crochet. And I get up every half hour or so and wandering around, take a break, and then sit back down and resume my podcast/crochet.

What about The Daily? I also like the guided outdoor runs with Peleton (even if I’m not following them, they are still oddly fun to listen to)

Since you like Maintenance phase and if books could kill, you have to try You’re wrong about. It is really awesome, funny and very instructive. Episode length is similar to the other podcast.

Scrap Happier with Alice Boll Oprah’s Super Soul Scrapbook Your Way Exactly Enough Time (Stacy Julian) Creative Soul Healing The Creative Exponent
These are fairly short. Most podcasts I listen to are long. Perfect for long walks with dogs. No more running for me unfortunately. Do it and enjoy it for as long as you can!

If I missed the nightly news I often will listen to the podcast/replay the next day. I occasionally wish I could "see" something but it works well for the most part. It's in your time frame and new episodes are posted by all the major networks every day. Good luck with the running!

Try Stuff You Should Know: Josh and Chuck talk about random topics that last 15 minutes to an hour, and there are hundreds to choose from. The topics might be Satanism, LSD, giraffes, food tasting , champagne etc etc. They are very easy listening, may be funny or serious, and offer lots of info about things I have never wondered about
a longer podcast is Beautiful anonymous, which involves the host (comedic personality with ability to be very serious) taking a phone call that lasts one hour, with the caller choosing what to talk about, generally about their own life. There are a lot of interesting people in this world! Some make you laugh out loud, some pull out the tears. The host, Chris Gethard, has managed to create A community of followers who seem to follow every weekly show. It has been on for several years, so there are many shows to choose from.

I have whiled away many hours on cars rides listening to Stuff You Should Know. I’d never heard of fainting goats or ayahuasca before that podcast. Revisionist History with Malcolm Gladwell is another good one. They’re 30-40 minutes and examines something that happened, and whether it’s remembered correctly. The one on creativity focusing on Leonard Cohen and Elvis Costello was really good. Same with the one about when McDonald’s changed their French fry formula.

Check out Carlos Whitaker.
On insta he is LosWhit. I love him even though he is heavily Christian and I am not. His views on the world and life speak to me.

I thought I might recommend the History Extra podcast. Most are 30-40 minutes, but many are under 30, as are many over 45, but never over an hr. Its from the BBC, but it covers wide ranging historical topics, not just there's. Might be worth it to scroll through the episodes. There are many. In the same vein, there's Dan Snow's History Hit. Wide range of historical topics again, but many more fall into the 20-30min range. There are many too. Good luck with your running.

When I had a 20-30ish minute commute to work a couple of years ago, I used to listen to Writer's Routine with Dan Simpson. He interviews writers on how they write, but I still found it really interesting as someone who is not actively trying to write a book! He's British and has a really 'friendly' voice

I heard a DJ talking about Julia Luis Dreyfuss podcast. I don't remember the name, something with wisdom. She interviews women who are a little older then her. One of the recent episodes was Bonnie Raitt. I don't know the length but think the DJ said short.

I like Under the Influence with Terry O'Reilly. It is about marketing and advertising and how we are influenced by it. It also gives history of different companies. The episodes are about 30 minutes long. His podcast used to be called The Age of Persuasion. It's was about marketing too. It is interesting what companies do to sell their products to us. Terry is on his 19th year with his podcast, so lots of episodes.
I have some other favourites but they are usually 45-50 minutes long.

I don’t have any recommendation on podcast but just wanted to throw out there some me connected time - my daily walk is the only time I consistently disconnect - sometimes I walk meditate but honestly no - it’s my time to look at birds and just be - no judgement here - just throwing it out as a possibility- I’ve always said my pup saved me during COVID a dog that has to be walked can be a blessing as HE is the motivation so I let that be the driver and now everyone knows you can text me 23x7 but that hour I be walking

Darcy Collins ever since we did that Mile-A-Day in May I walk in silence. However, I need more incentive for running. Plus especially at first, I need a distraction for how tough it is. Running is not easy.
