I have the desk set up that a lot of crafters have, the big slab over two Alex drawers, and for the most part I really like it. The only issue I have is that there seems to be a lot of wasted space with the Alex drawers since they don't pull out all the way. I am just curious what others keep back there, since I find myself either shoving stuff back there (like rarely used things) but then when I need it I have to unload the whole drawer..or stuff that I have extras of, like tape refills, but TBH I don't have that much extra of anything...just curious and was hopeful to get some ideas.

You can take the pin out to make them pull out farther, if you want. I made DIY dividers for the top drawers on two of my Alex drawers. I can pull them all of the way out.

I've used plastic containers to corral stuff within the drawers so it's easier to just grab the front container (or in my wooden stamp drawer - the top container) to reach the others and I can still grab the more used items from the front.

Thank you, I will try this! You could keep seasonal supplies in the back - something you only really use for a short time/once a year?

I store boxes of office supplies in the back of the drawers. I have what I need in an organizer.

That's the biggest downside of Alex drawers for me... I found a couple of very different YT videos showing ways to extend them: www.youtube.com/watch?v=MM58bXijU0M lego dude www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5t-hKV-aMM makeup lady I also found a lady who made two drawers into one so they'd be deeper! but they don't pull out further youtu.be/nFPY3ud65B8?si=IoduXH1tDK_-HOScBut with most things I use a container of some kind - box lid, tray, berry box - to hold things in the front so I can pull those out if I need to get to the overstock or less used items in the back. The minimalist in me also wants to say that it's OK to leave those spaces empty or to grow into - store extra "good boxes" back there if you need to stop things shifting.

I wonder how much it would cost to change the drawer glide hardware to fully extendable glides. I don’t have Alex drawers, though they’re on my wishlist, so I’m not sure how much space you’re losing. But if it’s a decent amount, maybe it would be worth it to get full use of the drawers. Looking for the glides on sale and only doing the drawers where this affects you the most could be worth it. I’m glad to see this thread so I know to take that into consideration for the future!

View Attachment When I got my Alex unit (the tall one) my dad built it for me when he was visiting over Thanksgiving. I told him I would finish up and put the screws on the bars that keep the drawers from pulling all the way out, but I never got around to it. I have used that unit for years and I have never had the problem of accidentally pulling the whole thing out. ETA: There are no kids at my house, and my DH never goes digging through my craft stuff, so the only one that opens them is me.

I feel like I need at least one Alex drawer set now to have a hidey-hole. 🤣

For some reason, I don't think I watched a video about it as much as someone mentioned in a video that they pulled out the pin at the back of the drawer that catches the drawer from being opened all of the way. I did what they said and it worked. Now I can't remember how I did it.
