My friend and I stayed near Times Square last spring. It was great. I never felt unsafe. workingclassdog , We took taxis everywhere. It was really easy. When we left the 9/11 memorial, we walked one block over to a busier street with hotels, at the advice of a police officer, to hail a taxi. Thanks for that! Did you ever take the subway?

I was a bit worried taking my young girls to Paris in 2017. It was coincidentally during the European Championship in soccer being held there, and at the time there were several incidents in Europe with ISIS driving vans into crowds of people. There was a LOT of people there for the soccer, and crowds attracts the crazies. We did go there, and it felt very safe. There were large areas cordoned off for people to watch soccer on big screens in front of the Eiffel Tower, and all entrances had armed guards. So that felt a bit weird, but it also felt like they at least took security seriously. Several people asked me if I really was taking my daughters there at that time, and I understand it. But there is a difference between being concerned, taking precautions, evaluating the situation and complete fear and doomsday predictions. But by the sound of it, your commenter may not be a stranger to what we in Norway call 'crisis maximisation'. And it is probably related to political views. But if NYC is safe enough for Trump these days, why would tou be in greater danger?

The antidote to these attitudes is for people to get out of their easy chairs, turn off Fox "News" and see a little of the world. It's amazing out there!
I'd go into NYC so much more often if it weren't for the expense, and my increased mobility issues. When I was younger and less gimpy, I loved to take the train in and just walk--for hours.

It is the "same" guys on my local FB news articles that complain about the shithole that Minneapolis is and they would "never" go there because they are sure they are going to get shot And on another post will talk about how horrible my town is in Central MN, and how downhill it has gone, and "they are so glad they don't live there anymore." They never live in fear. Oh no, they are alpha males who are not sheep. I figure it is one less racist crappy driver for me to deal with. As a fellow Minnesotan, I hear the same BS. Drives me insane. The worst is we have an ELA teacher who is extremely far right and told us all that we need to watch the "documentary" about the downfall of Minneapolis. I am appalled that we let her teach lessons about source credibility when she considers this Q-Anon crap credible. Oy. I have a friend, who I used to consider sane and left leaning (valedictorian of my class and a nurse/administrator), post that too, TWICE, on FB. WTF people!

Hide that person then you don’t have to see her comments It was a bit of a surprise that I wasn't expecting. I probably wouldn't have even posted if that comment were from people I know that would spout out something like that. I guess I was just surprised it came from her. We actually met on a work trip in Puerto Vallarta about 20 years ago. We both were scrappers and have been doing retreats and such for years and years. It's really no biggie, I just posted it because this is where we post stuff to share.

I think there are a lot of people who haven't traveled and use fear as an excuse to hide behind their lack of interest in the world. I would ignore the comment and enjoy your trip!

I live here and manage to survive every day by the skin of my teeth. (right) I can only imagine what media stories fueled that comment. People have always said that about NYC, and to them I say don't come we'll be fine without you.
PS: take the subway. There are plenty of tourists and regular city dwellers who ride every day and live to tell the tale. Just don't take the F train (my daily commute line and it is the worst).

Fox News loves to find every little problem in NY and blow it up. I'm there all the time -- I still feel perfectly safe. Go and enjoy - don't believe the BS hype. That must be why my mother keeps saying people are moving out of NYC in droves. "It's all over the news!" I've never heard one word about it, but I don't watch Fox News.

When we left the 9/11 memorial, we walked one block over to a busier street with hotels, at the advice of a police officer, to hail a taxi. Thanks for that! Did you ever take the subway? When we go to NYC we typically walk/subway everywhere. Sometimes an Uber or taxi if it's raining or other circumstances. I always use Google maps for public transportation anywhere I go and it makes it easy. It will tell you how to walk to get to the station, which train to get and the next one coming (and the ones after that), how many stops to ride/where to get off, and how to walk to your destination from your final station. The subway there now lets you just tap your credit card with a chip - so easy. One caveat is that if you are using the credit card for the first time, you can't "pass back". Each person riding needs to have their own cc with chip or metro card. Once a credit card has been used once, then you can pass back (I tap and go, then hand the card to my daughter to go after me).
