All I said was it was stressing me out just doing the planning and I am typically not like this.. I am usually go with the flow type person. And this is the comment. (I totally get it that if you don't want to go, not your thing, crime, etc.) This sounds like the end of the world comment.
"It's a sign that you shouldn't go!! Place is a friggin mess and completely lawless. Couldn't pay me to go to NY (and a few other cities) right now."
I responded that I just don't live in fear like that. And the next response was:
"believe me, I don't live in fear, just try to live smart and pay attention to what is REALLY going in in the world... it's not good"
I wanted to say, that is living in fear. I get that everyone doesn't want to go to NYC for whatever reasons like I said before. It's not everyone's cup of tea. Heck it might not be my cup of tea. I just left it at that. I have a feeling I know where this is coming from but I WON'T go down the political road.

Your instinct that it's political is correct. Just ignore it, move on, and enjoy your trip. And be sure to post lots of pics and tag that friend when you get back.

"To each his own" and I would leave it at that. I got a lot of that before I went to Spain on my own.
Comments of how safe I felt out in this scary world by myself. How would I navigate with a language barrier? And on and on. Well there really wasn't a language barrier. Most European cities have English speaking citizens. I learned some basic Spanish to help me on my way. I had a blast and no problems at all. I felt safer there than in my hometown.
I would shake my head to myself on that comment and just go have a good time.

I got comments like that when we went to both San Francisco and Chicago last year. We had a blast and never felt unsafe in either City, even while walking everywhere and taking public transportation. Is it a big city? Do you need to be cautious? Yes, but that is not unique to now.

It is the "same" guys on my local FB news articles that complain about the shithole that Minneapolis is and they would "never" go there because they are sure they are going to get shot And on another post will talk about how horrible my town is in Central MN, and how downhill it has gone, and "they are so glad they don't live there anymore." They never live in fear. Oh no, they are alpha males who are not sheep. I figure it is one less racist crappy driver for me to deal with.

It's funny, something that just popped up in my memory. My neighbor, "God Bless Her" who I try with ALL my might not to engage with BUT they are good people and will help out in a heartbeat. She is VERY religious and is very preachy, so while I do my best not to engage we do keep tabs on each other. Of ALL people their family goes to NYC all the time.. at least in the last few years. Of ALL people they are the ones I would least expect it. I would think they would be taking trips to the Holy Land, not NYC. Anyways, I figure if they can manage it, so can I. HAHA

Your FB friend is being alarmist. I was in NYC (Manhattan) for 9 days in November. We walked miles every day, all over the city, in addition to riding the subway most days. Never felt unsafe in daytime or nighttime. Be smart and observant of your surroundings, of course. But "lawless", it is not.
Have a wonderful trip!

I just wanna say I'm not worried at all. Ya know, be alert maybe more so than normal. Don't go down the dark alleyway. Normal stuff you would do in any town that you are not familiar with. DH even called me after he saw her post, and said "we need to cancel" (kidding)... And he is the one that is the type to avoid ANY situation that involves cities, crowds, etc. Give him a fishing pole and lake. He's like 'what the heck is wrong with her?"

We went on our first trip March 12-18 and we are NOT big city people. It was fine. We rode the subway a bunch and found that New Yorkers were helpful and kind. We only walked around after dark one night (in the financial district) and never felt unsafe. We also walked a TON, again never felt unsafe.
As far as being stressed, I get it. There is so much to do. I think you had already listed your must see's, just concentrate on that. We missed one or two things that were further down on our list but, I feel like we had a good time. I only felt that one attraction was kind of a waste (Top of the Rock, they only have 1 elevator running so the wait up and down is ridiculous).
I heard comments like that too when we got back from family but, I just think that is a product of A)not really traveling much or at all and B)Fox News/OANN

My daughter and I have been twice this year and the whole family also went over the holidays. Total alarmist ridiculousness. City was fine and we walked all over and took the subway - even at night. Now we stayed in heavily traveled areas and went to heavily traveled areas - but had zero issues walking back to hotel after seeing a show or having dinner at night. Other than getting stuck waiting for trains to restart after the earthquake and being worried about my flight, I had zero concerns in NY.
If you need any tips to help planning let me know. Our first trip and the family trip were pretty heavily planned as it was a mother/daughter extravaganza that was her Christmas present - and the family trip was over the holidays so crazy busy so felt like we needed to make plans beforehand. This last trip was utterly last minute and we planned nothing and had a great time! We last minute broadway tix twice and just kind of rolled with meals and didn't stress.

I live in NYC and I go about my life without undo fear. I live in a very nice neighborhood in Queens but if you read the neighborhoods Facebook group you would think we are in a war zone. The best is two days before the 4th of July somebody always posts, did anybody hear shots? Lots of shots! What is going on? And of course everything is going downhill and it’s not the place they grew up anymore!

Thanks Darcy: Our first full day there on a Friday we are going to 9/11 Memorial basically from Times Square (where we are staying). I'm not sure what the best mode of transportation is from there. DH wants to take an Uber which we figured out is about $30 bucks. He's really nervous about the subway. Can you get from Times Square easily to the Memorial (if you know) on the subway. Then we will stay in that area for the day and take in any sights around there. We will be in Times Square so that is just a given. Our second day is wide open really. I think Central Park will be on that day. Not sure yet what else. I have a notebook full of stuff. Maybe Rockefeller that day as well. I also have a bunch of cheap places to eat that were recommended... Then Sunday our last day, not sure.. we have to check out by 11:00 but we don't leave until like 7pm. We do plan on getting to the airport early because I want to see the old TWA terminal (which is now the TWA hotel). But I feel like we have enough time to do something else before heading to the airport. That's it in a nutshell. I have to keep it simple for DH and not overplan.. he is already anxious.. lol. OH I would love to come across like a flea market/farmers market type thing.. UGGG..

I am appalled that we let her teach lessons about source credibility when she considers this Q-Anon crap credible. Oy.

A couple weeks ago there was an article about Los Cabos, Cancun, and Puerto Vallarta in the travel section of the Washington Post. The comment section was divided equally into two groups. One group wrote about their positive experiences. The other group would never go there because they’d likely be murdered by the drug cartel. It was ridiculous.

My son’s marketing class went and went everywhere as part from 9-11 and they were safe, took the subway and had the best time.
The complaint was from Dad who wanted to go as a chaperone because they were seeing such cool stuff. When else would he have a great, guided tour of NYC. This is tongue in cheek of course but he asked…

OH I would love to come across like a flea market/farmers market type thing.. UGGG.. We stayed near Central Park and took the subway to the 9/11 memorial. I found the subway easy to navigate - but we have used subways all over the world, even in cities where we don't speak the language. Now even google will tell you which lines and transfers, so it's not too difficult. We didn't have time to take the boat out/around the Statue of Liberty the afternoon we visited the 9/11 memorial, but we did go out to the ferry point that evening to see it all lit up which was nice - I've only seen it from the air previously. We visited the Met and Natural History museum different days different trips with Central Park - both are massive with tons to see. My daughter and I did more ubering and using cabs on our first trip as we had several days where outfits and heels, made the subways less attractive! Never had any issues using those either. Have fun!

Lord have mercy, the RWNJs on NextDoor are so nuts. I live out in the ‘burbs. Any time someone posts about something like porch pirates, kids playing ding dong ditch, a strange vehicle doing a slow roll through the neighborhood, whatever, the usual suspects always chime in with, “You get what you vote for!” 🙄 Geez people. If you hate it here that much, please move. I hear North Dakota, South Dakota and Iowa are nice and they’d LOVE to have you. I actually really appreciate my kid’s great schools, the nice parks, roads that are maintained, streets that get plowed before 7 am in the winter, decent libraries, and all the other things my tax dollars pay for.

Are you FB friends with my dad? 😂 He freaked out when he learned my oldest DD was going to live there for a semester in college and we heard so much false BS. My son now lives in Harlem and between the two of them, one of my kids has been living in the NYC area for the last 6 years and none of the forewarned tragedies have befallen them.
His wife called a couple of weeks ago to ask if everything was ok in Dallas because they heard the homeless population was out of control and it was getting really rough.
I can only assume that this is coming from their constant flow of MAGA news.

My friend and I stayed near Times Square last spring. It was great. I never felt unsafe. workingclassdog, We took taxis everywhere. It was really easy. When we left the 9/11 memorial, we walked one block over to a busier street with hotels, at the advice of a police officer, to hail a taxi.
