I’ve come across several classes featuring built mini albums in nontraditional shapes with embellished covers. They’re super cute, but I feel like they’re more suitable for display as they’d be impractical to store on a standard shelf with other albums. I don’t have the shelf space to feature them as a display.
Does anyone make these type of mini albums? How are you storing them? How do you keep the exposed parts from ripping off or fraying?

I feel the same as you- cute but somewhat impractical. I imagine if I did make them though I’d have them in a basket accessible for guest to see if they wanted.

I agree - gathered in a basket they might be fun, but I don't know how well they'd hold up to a lot of handling, and also DUST. Anything on display in a basket is going to get dusty in my house. If you're Paige Evans and you have a glass display case (and a house cleaner??) maybe...
I think some of these kinds of projects are more about the joy of making them.

TOTALLY AGREE. They’re adorable. Absolutely. But for those of us who’ve been scrapping a long time and live in areas where housing is extra expensive, storage space is at a minimum. I cannot house and store this kind of thing anymore. I’ve had to stop taking classes that include mini albums. I either need to sell the product (hard to do) or give it away (wasteful) because of storage concerns as well.
I can make flat-ish layouts and have bookcase storage for these albums that I’ve made a priority so I’m sticking to that format.
I did like making them back when I did, but I had to Marie Kondo them out of my life for practicality sake.

I made minis for years and have a variety. I store them loosely in plastic tubs and pull out a group to display in a basket, especially for holidays when I’m hosting family get togethers.
Right now I have Easter and spring out. I’m ready to put them away and maybe closer to summer bbq weather, I’ll bring out big family beach vacation albums when everyone went.
Some albums don’t come out for display any more, like my daughter’s dance minis or vacation albums that were just our little family. She knows where they are stored and could look at them any time she’s home.

I wanted to add, I do have to repair the albums periodically. They aren’t in page protectors so things come loose. I don’t mind repairing and like the look of well-handled albums.

i used to display a few minis on my coffee table in low ceramic bowls. i love to have people pick them up and flip through. i don’t mind any quick repairs. i learned to make them sturdy and fortified with extra adhesive. i want my albums to be viewed and enjoyed.

I used to love making mini albums. But they weren’t practical since they took up too much room and only contained a handful of photos. I purged them at one point. I saved a few, some In tossed, and with some I transferred the mini layouts to a 12 x 12 pages and put them into a regular albums

I made mini albums when my youngest daughter was playing sports. Made them out of paper bags!
I don't know what she's done with them. She has them in her possession. Probably has them packed away and only looks at them occasionally. They were fun to make, though!

I think some of these kinds of projects are more about the joy of making them. They make great gifts too, particularly for those occasions when we've been invited to share some joy. A few photos put together in a mini album in a fun way is a cute thank you gift afterwards.

I've only made a few that I've kept (the rest given as gifts). I store mine all flat/jenga'd in a plastic container. One I even gave in a storage container, just to help keep it safe. It's true that they feel more exposed to hold up without protection. So fun to make though 😂

I either need to sell the product (hard to do) or give it away (wasteful) because of storage concerns as well. I totally know what you mean... but I would reframe keeping something you'll never use in space you can't spare as being wasteful, not giving it away. The money was spent long ago whether you made a finished product or not. If you sell or give it away someone might get use and enjoyment from it and you also don't have to think about the money spent or how to store any more.

But my point is I’m no longer doing that for new product. I’m not signing up events that include a mini book bc it’s wasteful. I won’t use it. It’s a waste of my money. If I know I won’t use it now, it’s really dumb to pay for it anyway just to give it away the next week.

Nothing about this hobby is practical. Giant albums needing a home. An entire room filed with paper and stickers. Thousands of dollars invested. But I wouldn’t change it for the world. Includes mini albums which I still do make. In general, I feel like the industry is offering less and less for those those types of projects. Remember when October Afternoon had all the adorable shaped albums? So cute!
In any case, I store my mini albums (I have a lot), in baskets next to my regular albums. Keeps them fairly well protected and I can just tend the whole basket out to look at them. They tend to be my most looked at books, easier to handle than big albums.
I’ve gifted some albums, always a hit. And also done silent auction baskets with. Few coordinating cards. People LOVE those.
So no, not practical. But so much fun, I love making them.

When my daughter was young I made a mini album for my mother in law and she loved it (she was not a scrapbooker) but otherwise I don't do mini albums but I like looking at them or watching videos of them sometimes.
But what I don't bother with is what I call "dust collectors". For example I follow Doodlebug (and I do love Doodlebug) but they often feature tchotchke type ideas (not scrapbook or album related but trinkets to sit around the house) that I don't want to waste my scrapbook products on. They would sit around and collect dust and I wouldn't give them as gifts.

Poor muffin pan 😂 I feel like in general I wouldn’t make them. I do like altering some things that can serve a purpose or to hang on a wall or a bookcase - like their framed kits are fun to do and switch out for the season in my scrap room. I also have some seasonal decor like fake mini pumpkins I embellished and put out each year. Stuff like that is fine with me. It sits out for a limited time and then goes away in storage. But to do that stuff all the time, nope.

Thanks everyone! I appreciate getting ideas from the peas as I figure out how to adapt this hobby to accommodate my current living space and lifestyle.

So I love mini albums! It’s practically all I do now and I consider 6x8 to be a mini album. I do random larger layouts here and there but I like to do minis because they are great for travel projects or just fun random stories. I recently did one using all the Snapchat filter pics my daughter and I have taken together and she loved it!
I store some in a low basket on a table in our living room. Then I rotate them out depending on season but a few stay in there all of the time.
I’ve only had one lose a piece on the cover, but for the most part people are really respectful handling them. And they are much easier to look at then the big bulky 12x12 albums stored on the shelf. People are always looking at the minis and rarely pull out the big albums.

Does anyone make these type of mini albums? i used to. back when companies like Maya Road made blank chipboard albums in odd shapes
How are you storing them? i stored them laying down so that pointed or weird angled edges didn't get smushed
How do you keep the exposed parts from ripping off or fraying? i am of the belief that albums with worn or frayed edges are a sign that they have been looked through a lot. that the contents are worth revisiting time and time again. a pristine album makes me think it was a one and done or that the design is more valued than the memory keeping contents.

I like this style a lot and have made several in the past. I just chuck them all in a basket/bin. They don't get rifled through all that much so I haven't been worried about how they will hold up. They mostly just sit there so they do get a bit dusty but I haven't noticed anything too bad yet.

Loving hearing how all the peas make this hobby fit their lifestyle!
I think sticking to (limited) bound mini albums sans decorated covers is best for me given my space limitations. This way I can stack them side by side without worrying about anyone (including me) ripping everything off the cover while pulling them off the shelf.
I also love the basket idea but it would be impractical given my small home.

While I love the idea of mini albums, I fear keeping them out for people that might not be so careful with them. That probably sounds silly, but most of my albums have page protectors, and mini albums that have all those “pull tabs” and hidden pockets seem like an accident waiting to happen. Maybe I’m too cautious, lol

I’ve made a few, mostly as a creative endeavor, and they were fun to do. I did learn from experience, though, that grandkids are not gentle with them, and display is not an option. I had to repair one after they visited. For me, they have been mostly just an exercise in creativity. I have two on display in my craft room, but they aren’t easily accessible, and the grandkids have left them alone.
So, as selfish as it sounds, they are mainly for my own enjoyment. We don’t have company over anymore, other than family, since DH had a heart attack a few years ago. He needs lots of rest, and company wear him out too much.
So the mini albums I made have been something I could enjoy looking at when I need a creativity boost, because I got far more creative making them than I have with regular scrapbooking.

i’m currently creating a 5 inch round mini album for my dog, Calvin. it’s sitting out in the living room and my hubby is already thumbing through it with Calvin.
mini albums are my favorite to make and give as gifts.
