We're planning on getting a golden retriever pup in about two months. Vet bills are crazy so I want to get insurance. Anyone have pet insurance that is not part of a job perk? What company do you use for insurance? What kinds of prices/limits do you have?
My DD adopted her longhair cat as a kitten from the humane society about 3 years ago. Last year she had emergency surgery at University of Florida that cost about 8K. Her insides were "squished together" in the wrong place-congenital issue. Then she had a hairball that kept getting larger because it couldn't get through her stomach. They did surgery to move the organs back and remove the huge hairball. She pays about 20% copay.
Then the same thing happened a few weeks ago-another surgery. Same basic thing. Her organs are sort of fused together and they don't want to "disconnect everything" as that could make it worse. So another 7K for this.
She has good insurance because it's through her employer but I don't work so I know that insurance will be more expensive than getting it from work.
Thanks.

We use Manypets insurance for fur babies as it has a reasonable deductible of $250 and reimbursement of 80% once deductible is met. You file through the app and it’s paid within a few days.
My vet accepts Trupanion and will file it, but charges a % to do so. It’s also much more expensive.
Our youngest cat, Punk, has a recurring urinary disease that has cost over 1k and 3k. Vet allowed 10 days to pay and sent the invoice. We file and had the money to pay him back. We did have to come up with deductible and 20% but much better than the full amount.
Always get pet insurance!

Did not have a positive experience with pet insurance. My experience was that they will maintain your rate for a couple of years, and then increase it exponentially without warning. I find it better to put the money in savings instead. I do have a "membership" with my vet though for like $17/month. In addition to discounted exams, I get discounts on his Simparica and $5 nail trims, so the math works out.

I have Pumpkin but frankly don't know how good they are because, fortunately, I've never had to use it yet. Unfortunately it didn't cover the removal of my dog's anal glands last November because it was caused by a pre-existing condition, which I was fully aware of.

When we did have it, they always found ways to exclude what we were needing to use the insurance for. Then the cost would skyrocket even with no paid out claims.
