The USC thread has me wondering—did your college select a valedictorian?
I’ve never heard of a valedictorian for a large school like USC. I’ve heard of it at some of the smaller private schools, but not the bigger ones. Each college within my university has its own commencement, so we wouldn’t have an opportunity for one student to speak to everyone.
I assume USC based the selection on something other than grades because there would be so many different students with perfect GPA. Do they have commencement at the Coliseum? If so, it must be a HUGE ceremony, and I would not want to sit through all those names being called LOL.
So how was it done at your school?

I have no idea how it was done at my school. Too long ago. I don’t recall any student speeches at my kid’s college graduation last year.

No,I went to a large state university and there was no valedictorian. DS went to a smaller state university and there also was no valedictorian. I dont even know how that would work when there are so many different paths to graduation and some are more rigorous than others.
Speakers at graduation at ds' university are usually former students. He graduated in Dec 2021 so it was someone from the university who spoke (like the dean or the univ president or someone like that. Not a student)

Nope, not a thing here. Student Body President might make a speech, but there's not a Valedictorian speech at any of the university graduations that I've gone to.

No valedictorian speech for my Ca state school. We had multiple graduations. One for each school. So business, education, health, sciences, etc etc etc. Graduations took 3 days with multiple each day. Only school employees spoke. I just wanted to get it over with lol I only went to appease my parents. Lol

I graduated from USC and I remember having a valedictorian, but I couldn't tell you what they said in their speech. It is a large school We had one big graduation ceremony for the entire university, followed by satellite ceremonies with our departments. I can't remember if the valedictorian spoke at the main ceremony, or if the valedictorian was selected from our departments. The main graduation ceremony is where the commencement speaker would speak. It's often someone famous.

We just had the main speaker, who is always someone of significant note (like I had Jimmy Carter), and then the university president or someone does give a short speech. I think that was about it. Definitely no student speeches - can you imagine the pressure of "competing" with some of those speakers?

Never heard of a university having a valedictorian - definitely didn't have one at my graduation.

No valedictorian for larger schools but each college of the universities had a ceremony where someone was recognized as top in their class and gave a speech.
My eldest daughter went to a smaller college and they had a valedictorian. Her speech was so stupid we still laugh about it.
