This is a question that I already know what my answer is. I'll tell you right now that I'm sending the items back after work today. But I had people tell me I was crazy for doing so. So I'm going to ask you guys what you would do.
I ordered a $100 item from a very big online store not Amazon. But an actual storefront not a mom and pop type store this is a very big store I bet most of us have ordered from them. In any event I ordered an item that's normally $100 It was on sale for 70. Also ordered a small $6 Instead of the items I ordered I received three items one that sells for 40, one for almost 50 and one that sells for 500. I immediately contacted the store and said I received incorrect items in my box I didn't order any the items I did receive I did not receive the items I did order. It took several communications on their stupid chat site to get them to understand. They just kept telling me they would automatically send me my $6 item. I finally got someone to email me and they said I could return the items and then and only then would they send me the item I ordered. I was worried that the item was going to sell out because it has sold out before and I've had a hard time getting it especially on sale so I asked why they couldn't send me my item before they received the incorrect items back. They keep insisting they cannot do that. So now of course the item is sold out and I am sending back 600 worth of merchandise and I won't even get the item that I ordered. Several people have told me I should have just reordered the item I wanted and kept these items and never told them. I could never do that because I would never be able to use the items without feeling guilty. I am annoyed with them however besides the fact that I will not get the item I paid for that they offer nothing to me in return I'm not getting a discount code on a future order I am not getting even an apology really from them. for this. Just send us back the item and after we process it we will send you the item you ordered. But it's sold out so I know I'm not going to get it. I'm having to drive 20 minutes at least to get to UPS store after school today and it's 20 minutes in the opposite direction of my house. The joy of living in the suburbs I guess. We don't have any place closer than that. So I'm doing all the legwork I had to email them at least 15 times to get this dealt with and I am absolutely getting nothing in return. That kind of ticks me off. I easily could never have contacted them and told them what happened. Honestly think many people probably would not have so that is what my question is would you have kept the items and not said anything knowing they are items you would use or would you do what I'm doing which is email them 15 times and drive at least 40 minutes out of your way to rectify their mistake? What would you expect the company to do in a situation like this?

Oh and to add insult to injury My husband opened up the box that the items came in. P he didn't know what I'd actually ordered and did not realize they were incorrect items because they are items I would absolutely. He broke down the box to recycle it and I have nothing even remotely big enough for the items to return so I will likely have to buy a box at the UPS store. I don't even know where I could get a box as big as this item needs.

I am marking yes as I would also feel the need to return the items. In normal circumstances.
However...after all the emails and not getting what I wanted, I would be too frustrated to make this return.
I guess I was no help!

I would return it also but tell them to come and get it...send a prepaid label and schedule an at home pick up.

I would've told them they could send a UPS driver with a pickup label/call tag and box. Screw bending over backwards to correct their mistake when they obviously aren't worried about it.

The good side of me would return the items, and most likely I would. BUT somewhere in that process I might just have a change of heart. Without guilt. lol
My only experience in returning something was a desk that I bought to put together. It was impossible. (and I have pretty good luck putting IKEA stuff together) (this was not an IKEA thing)... anyways, halfway through it I got so mad I gave up. DS helped and said something is wrong because there is no way these pieces fit like they are supposed to. I put in a return with Amazon hoping they would just say keep it, since it was defective and two I am now going to have to take it apart. 1/2 way trying to take it apart, I was like I'M out. I took whatever pieces I had threw them in the box, trashed the rest and took it to Kohls.

This is way too much trouble for something no one there seems to even care about.

Since you have to drive anyways, can you return it to the actual store front? You said it is a big chain and the ones that I am thinking of usually let you return online orders in the store.

I would have made an effort in the beginning. But when it became work for me, I missed out on the item I ordered, and they offered nothing in return in the form of a discount or credit, I would have stopped. There's no way I would have gone through 4-5 chats and 15+ emails. And I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to drop items off.

They would have had one chance to fix it- send someone to my door to pick up the incorrect items and deliver what I ordered. I certainly would not have had multiple conversations trying to get them to understand and I wouldnt be making a 40 minute round trip to correct their error.
Amd you really need to tell us what the items are!

I would have ordered the replacement item at the discount cost. Then I would initiate a return for the incorrect items, and request a refund with the reason that the wrong items were sent. I would tell the seller that the box was damaged and I didn't have another one. Then I would have been honest, and it's the seller's problem to arrange the return.

The side of me that believes in karma would want to send the unwanted items back. But if they were unwilling to issue a call tag and schedule a pickup, I might be out at that point especially if it was something big and difficult to return.
I know from previous experience that it can be dang near impossible to return something that was sent in error because they’re looking for the item they *should* have sent and not the item they *did* send. I had that happen with a pair of shoes from Rocket Dog that was supposed to have effortless returns. Yeah, not so much. They sent the right style of shoe in the correct box but the totally wrong size of shoes IN the box. Ugh. It was so hard to get them to understand that I ordered the exact right thing I wanted, the box had the correct size printed on it but the shoes themselves were wrong. 🙄 And on top of all that, they wanted to charge me $8.95 shipping for the return tag! UM, NO, it was YOUR MISTAKE, you pay to fix it! 😤 After a lot of going around and around and around, they finally agreed to send out the correct size shoes at no additional charge and told me to just give away or donate the pair that was the wrong size. It was so dumb.
And now I really want to know what that $500 item was! 🤣

It was so dumb. Something similar happened to me. It was a lens filter. The label on the plastic wrap had the size I wanted, but the size on the actual box was something else. I had to return it to Amazon before I got credit. And then I ordered another one, and the same thing happened. I returned that one and went to Best Buy to get the size I needed.

I voted yes but I wouldn't be going out of my way to return the wrong items in the circumstances you describe, I would expect them to send a courier. I think the bottom line here (UK) is you're well within your rights to keep goods sent by mistake. We have regulations that state that you have a right to keep goods delivered to you that you didn't ask for. You have no obligation to send them back to the company or to pay for them. I expect you will have something similar, no? Based just on what you described I think you should enjoy your new item!
I would have reordered the correct item as soon as I realised I was getting no where with them.

I would return it also but tell them to come and get it...send a prepaid label and schedule an at home pick up. This is what I would do as well. As far as the item that frequently sells out I would have cancelled that part of the order and placed it separately.

I feel like I'm generally pretty ethical but if I have to work to return an item I didn't order to some big company, I won't. That's true whether it's $5 or $500. I'm not the person who screwed up. If I can send one email and they'll send a label and I can stick it out for pickup, sure, but I'm not jumping through hoops because a faceless company is lazy and cheap.

If I was concerned the item I wanted was going to sell out, I would have ordered it again. Then return the wrong items & if I got the item I wanted twice, I’d return one of them.,

I would only return it if they made it easy for me to do so.
A few years ago a Nintendo Switch got delivered to my apartment by mistake from Amazon. It had my address on it and so I opened it. Didn't order a switch so I spent hours with their customer service and finally took it back to a Whole Foods Amazon shipping place which was a huge hassle that they didn't seem to care about.
Lesson learned, I should have just kept it.

I wouldn't go out of my way or spend any money to return it. But if they made it easy for me to do so, I would.

In the circumstances you describe I would not return the item and I would not feel bad about it at all. Guilt wouldn’t even occur to me.
I would have emailed once and if they didn’t offer to come pick it up on their cost and their time AND send me the correct item, that is all I would do. I absolutely would not have spent my time on 15 emails and I would not spend any of my time or gas money driving it to a store.

My thoughts are similar to most people here.
If I was worried that I was going to miss out on the item I really wanted at the discounted price, I would have re-ordered that item immediately.
Then I would ask them what to do about the items that I didn't order.
I think you have gone above and beyond what is reasonable to fix a mistake THAT YOU DIDN'T MAKE!
There is no way that I would go to all that effort to return an item that I didn't want in the first place, especially if it was going to cost me time and money. Nope, no way. If they want it back, they can come and get it themselves.
I agree with your friends who said that you shouldn't return it. Please don't spend your own time and money to return it.

BTW, the poll doesn't really reflect all the possible options. YES I would want to return it, but NO I am not going out of my way to do it myself.

They screwed up and now they're giving you a hard time about getting what you ordered in the first place? How does THAT work? We need names so we don't have to deal with this corporate behemoth that cares so little about customer satisfaction.
At this point, they're going to have to come to my house with a mailing label accompanied by champagne and chocolates for me not to tell everyone who will listen how $#*tty their customer service is.

If you have the label to send the things back, you will not need to purchase a box. UPS will supply a box free of charge. Did your card get charged for the items that you did order? I'd make sure that the charge was credited back to your account before sending back the other items.
