My 15yo son had a tennis match today. It was chilly (45 degrees) but not horrible. During the match a few of his fingers turned white. I gave him some gloves and it resolved. He said it felt hot when they warmed up. When I googled this the only thing that came up was Raynaud’s. If that is what it is, is it concerning or just something to be aware of? Any other explanations? He has not had this happen before.

Dd, ds, and I have it. No concern. But get him checked for Dysautonomia, POTS, and Ehlers Danlos.

I also have it, runs in my family. People with Raynauds are more prone to frostbite, something to be aware of since you’re in the north

If it happens and he has no gloves tell him to put his hands under his arm puts. Skin to skin if possible. Do not run under warm/hot water. They must but warmed up slowly, naturally.

45 degrees with no gloves, playing a sport outdoors is cold. I would expect his fingers to feel exactly as they did given that temperature.

I was diagnosed at age 14. Gloves are his friend as long as he actually uses them. I have them everywhere. In my bag, the car, the house, pockets, and the like.

Someone opened my car glove box and was surprised I actually have gloves in it!! I have some inexpensive $1 one size fits all around here at home. I also have several pairs of gloves that have and extra fingerless pair over the top. Sometimes I just wear the fingerless, which also have no thumb too.

I’d agree with this except for several fingers turning white along with feeling hot after. Pretty classic Raynauds symptoms. While it can be just a nuisance medical condition there can also be other complications. Much better to bring it to his Doctors attention.

Those are also signs of frostbite and since he is playing a sport where he cant put his hands in his pockets or wear gloves, that is likely the answer. Id wait and see how often it happens.

DD has it, one of my other kids probably does, too. The pediatrician was not really concerned, but I would like to explore it more. My friend's mom had it so bad that it seriously impacted her life. Delta Dawn, I'll send you a PM

DH has developed it the last few years. Seems to me that if he can keep his hands warm (covered), it doesn't get too bad. If he's doing a long outdoor training ruck or reffing soccer games for several hours, he will often tuck some hot hands in his bag to provide a little extra warmth.
Weather conditions also factor in - a 50 degree rainy, overcast day with wind out of the north is much worse than a 50 degree day sunny day with calm winds or wind out of the south.

If he was experiencing this multiple times and when the weather wouldn't justify the reaction, that would be one thing. But happening once, in the cold? Probably nothing to worry about.

I have Renaud's (fingers and toes since I was a child) and while cold weather does impact it I can also have white fingers in the summer giving lettuce a quick rinse under cold water. It is a circulation thing for me so i can often alleviate symptoms by giving my hands a few good shakes.

🖐🏻. I’ve even had to buy gloves while shopping in grocery stores! So now I have several pairs. I tend to wear mittens as they keep fingers warmer.

My son developed Raynauds around age 15, same age as his psoriasis showed up. He had to learn to protect his fingers from cold.

I’ve had it for many years. It can get pretty painful if not warmed u. I also have issues when getting items out of our chest freezer. If I have to move anything out of the way to get an item, that’s all it takes!!!

My mother in law has a pretty severe case. My DD24 also developed it a few years ago, I'm afraid hers will be quite severe by the time she is older as well. DD also currently takes Vyvanse for ADHD and we've learned it has a significant effect on circulatory issues and can cause Raynauds or worsen a known case.

Thanks everyone. I did send an email to his Dr and they said we would talk about it at his next physical but to keep track of any symptoms.
