My BIL's fiancee just posted a gofundme for her nephew who broke his leg in P.R. and was in a remote location and didn't get care for several days so there are complications. First they were trying to get money to get him a med flight back home etc. Now apparently he can't fly for some time so they are trying to figure out how to get him home when he can even travel. Family members are there with him now.
Lots of comments about why the U.S. govt isn't helping him get back etc.

Would the US government help someone get back from Nevada or Hawaii? Nope. Puerto Rico is part of the United States.
I dont know how many people flew down to be with him, but with hindsight, probably only one person should have gone so as to reserve funds to get him home.

It’s not the same as Nevada or Hawaii. Yes, it’s a territory, but a lot of US healthcares are useless in PR.

I just know she and her friends will comment about how useless our state reps (DEM) that they are writing too are and everything is Joe Biden's fault.... But yeah, he should have had travel insurance.

There are a number of reasons why they wouldnt in this situation and one of them is that he isnt in a foreign country

But I don't think they help people who are injured or ill while traveling (in the country or out) unless maybe it's due to civil unrest/war, natural disaster etc. I mean that's why you need travel insurance. To get care while there and get home if you can't use normal transportation. So I don't see whether you are in the U.S. (or Puerto Rico) or say Italy, matters.

I would not expect help from the US government unless someone were trapped in an unfriendly country. PR is a US territory, his family is able to get to him. I don't know about the quality of the hospitals but I do think travelers need to prepare for things to go wrong especially if they are traveling somewhere remote.
Honestly, it irks me every time I hear about all the rescue operations it takes to get to someone stranded on a mountain because they were hiking in a blizzard and there was an avalanche or some other foolish thing they shouldn't have been doing in the first place. I'm not saying this young man was doing something foolish but bad things do happen that can cost a lot of money for medical care anywhere in the world including in your own town. You can't expect the government to bail out everyone.

The real question is why didn't they purchase travel insurance? Personal responsibility seems to be lacking these days. I do he will be ok though.

I would not expect help from the US government unless someone were trapped in an unfriendly country. Same here. I'm not sure why people commenting on the Go Fund Me page think the US Gov't should help. He broke his leg and had medical complications while on vacation. He isn't in a political situation or anything. We once had a girl from our church go on a mission trip to Honduras. The first day after arriving, she became very ill and because of her location, there were no hospitals nearby to help. (Turns out she was having some kind of late reaction to the vaccines she received). She literally almost died, but it was up to those that could help (mostly her family) to get her back to the US for treatment (where after weeks in the hospital, she eventually recovered). No one expected the US Government to help.

That’s why it’s really important to get travel insurance with medi vac coverage. The ones I buy usually have 1 million or 2 million in medical coverage for medi vac. Insurance is cheap compared to cost if you are ever in a situation. I don’t have a lot of sympathy for people who travel for pleasure without insurance. If you can afford the trip you can afford the insurance.
