I need to replenish my supply of several different kinds of light bulbs (regular soft white and the decorative flame type for my chandlers). It is crazy and overwhelming looking at the variety of bulbs available - brand, quality of the light and PRICE. Amazon seems the best place to gather all that information and get a good price.
Would you order light bulbs online? I saw a few reviews for the small flame bulbs mention some came damaged or with one of the two filaments broken. That seems like a big risk. My alternative is driving to Home Depot or Target and paying significantly more per bulb. What would you do?

We don’t keep a big supply of light bulbs in the house. The only reason we may have extras is because they usually come 2-4 per pack. If we need one, it is a quick drive to Target, Walmart, or Home Depot. I would worry about breakage when ordering online.

We get all of our lightbulbs online, most at Amazon, and have for years and haven’t had issues with any of them as I recall. eta: We mostly buy canned lighting, but have also purchased smart bulbs, Edison bulbs and soft white versions.

I wouldn't because even if I go to the store it seems like I never get the right one anyways. I just lucked out a few weeks ago and found the plain clear bulbs for my ceiling fan. Those things are impossible to find. AND they were on clearance. Light bulbs are the bane of my existence. This is my old lady rant... I missed the day when I can go into the store, find a lightbulb and be done with it. The choices drive me nuts. LOL

I have bought them online, and generally had pretty good luck. I did a bunch from an actual lighting site, too, and those have all been fine.
You do need to be prepared that you may get some that are broken. I’d check to see who the vendor is if you buy from Amazon, and see if they are shipped by vendor or Amazon.

I've bought lightbulbs online before for the exact reasons you have stated. I didn't have any trouble and would do it again.

I bought some from Walmart recently that had to be shipped as they didn't have the ones I wanted in stock. They arrived just fine.
The reason I order was the first bulbs I bought for new bathroom fixtures were too bright. The new fixtures have a clear globe so I have to use a fancier clear bulb. 60W LED clear bulbs inside clear globes lit up the bathroom like a runway! I ordered 40w and that's a bit better.

I would expect any company selling lightbulbs to know how to package them properly and wouldnt think twice about ordering them online

I would say I make my DH buy them because he’s already at places like Home Depot and Menards every week anyway, but in reality light bulbs tend to be one of the things that seem to multiply on their own in dark corners, LOL. I did buy a bunch of basic bulbs on sale at Costco over a year ago and still have most of them. I also bought a couple sets of the wifi bulbs that you can use with Google Home there too when they were on sale. We got a bunch of LED bulbs for free from the electric company where our cabin is located, we have some specific lamps that those bulbs work in so that was good. There are so many local places convenient to me to just go buy them at the store, plus a lot of those places have test bulbs set up so you can see what color light they produce which is helpful, so that’s what I’d do.
ETA: after some new neighbors moved in a while ago, they gave DH a big box of random light bulbs which was weird, but whatever. If we need one we almost certainly already have them.

I've done it all--online from Amazon, from specialty stores, from the grocery, the DIY stores, the odd free one here and there. It's all fine. If some arrive broken, contact the shipper and have them make it right.
I find it frustrating to shop in person when I'm looking for something with multiple parameters. Wattage, base size, bulb shape, bulb opacity, warm/cool color--there's a lot to sift through on a store shelf that is often in disarray.
We just ordered specialty replacement pucks for our outdoor LED soffit lighting and the box came crushed, along with the collar of one of the pucks. There wasn't an issue getting a replacement--it just arrived today.

I buy so few light bulbs any more since they are all long lasting ones that its no biggie to thow some in my basket when shopping online at Walmart for pick up. But I would order online for shipping if I could not find what I needed from Walmart.

The majority of light bulbs needed in my house are Edison ... they don't sell them everywhere so I definitely order them online ... I would say that 90% of the lightbulbs I have purchased have been from Amazon ... no problem with breakage at all ... I just changed a bunch of light fixtures in my condo and they all require Edison bulbs ... now I have a bunch of regular bulbs sitting on a shelf with no home ... I will probably sell them cheap on FB Marketplace.

I always get mine at Sam’s or Costco and stick up when they have sales or instant rebates from the power company.
I’ve been able to snag boxes of 4 bulbs for my canned lights for $1 per box after rebate. I always bought the limit when they were that cheap LOL. I still have a pretty good stash and haven’t bought bulbs for years because they last so long.

I remember a few years ago Costco had the canned lights for like .88 cents for a 4-pack (at my mom's Costco, not mine) So mom picked up a TON of them and I have 1/2 the loot. Haven't had to buy any canned lights in years.

I buy bulbs from Amazon, but they are not necessarily cheaper. I've been loving the 'corn bulbs'. They are SUPER bright, but low wattage. I have the regular bigger size for lamps, fixtures, and I have the shorter ones for my ceiling fans. The shorter ones for my ceiling fans were under $20 for 5 bulbs. They also have candelabra style that fit chandeliers, etc, but you'd have to have the right type of fixture for these to be attractive. You can fit clips shades on them - sort of. I just got regular LED flame shape candleabra bulbs for my chandelier. I love the LED because they are brighter and cooler. I always make sure to get the WARM WHITE color though.
