Do you have any near you? The one at my corner is staying open, but many around me are closing. Mine is at the end of a strip plaza and has no drive thru. So sad.

Rite Aid purchased our local large pharmacy chain about 2 years ago. They were AWESOME until then. Once RA took over they turned awful. Since that time RA has closed MANY of those locations as well as several of their "own" Rite Aid stores in my city. Aren't they in bankruptcy, or am I making that up?

They have been in bankruptcy for a while. My store just expanded its pharmacy…nearly doubled in size. So far they haven’t added any extra employees but they may once the nearby stores close. It is definitely a mess.

I know one that closed up a few years ago. There are still a few open in the area. I never go to one, I'll usually go to CVS. But Rite Aid used to (or maybe still does) sell Thrifty ice cream. We would go to the Rite Aid just for the ice cream.

Not to mention the fact that they were one of oure only 24hr pharmacies in the city.

We don’t have Rite Aid in my state (I had never seen one until I visited NYC). I looked it up and their locations are interesting to me. They only operate in 16 states. Started in the Northeast (Pennsylvania) and expanded along the east coast, then eventually to the west coast, but they pretty much only have stores on the coasts. Idk why, I just thought their map was interesting. www.scrapehero.com/location-reports/Rite%20Aid-USA/

Then Rite Aid took over Thrifty's, which was a west coast chain with over 1,000 stores. Thrifty's was known for their ice cream, which Rite Aid continued to sell.

One near me closed last year. It sucks because they had a Thrifty Ice Cream parlor in it.

In 1999, there were 4 built in my city. About a month after the 4th one was completed, all 4 of them closed down and we never got any more. Thought it was really odd that they came and went so quickly.

Walgreens bought them out and closed many stores or changed them to Walgreens. I saw my old one last year when I went back to PA, but all the ones near me in GA were closed or changed right after I moved here (about 2018 or 2019).
I liked RiteAid much better than Walgreens as far as pharmacy service and the rewards program, so I was pretty bummed. I really hate CVS for pharmacy stuff.

The one at my corner is staying, as they are in the process of expanding the pharmacy. One about 5 miles away had all the scripts sent to a Walgreens. The Rite Aid about 3 miles away had all the scripts sent to mine. Lately many of my scripts have been on back order when the automatic renewal comes up. A local independent has a sign up welcoming Rite Aid customers.

I think my city has one, on the other side of town... We have two Walgreens near me though.

The Rite Aid by me is closing. It was very slow and I’m surprised it stayed open as long as it did. There is a Walgreens one block away in one direction and a CVS one block in the other direction. Both seem to be doing well.

We have two Walgreens and a CVS nearby. I don’t know one person who goes to the CVS. Walgreens, yes. And one large independent 3 miles away with a post office substation.

What is it with flooding areas with businesses like Rite Aids, and then closing most of them? I have no idea why anyone thought we needed a Rite Aid on every corner and a CVS on the other corner and a Walgreens down the street.
Now, its car washes. My area is being flooded with huge car washes. Some right down the street from existing car washes. Why the sudden need? Were people just not washing their cars before?
Is it some corporate cash grab or tax write off game?

Is it some corporate cash grab or tax write off game? Market research and competition. One company does well at one corner, the other company sees that and decides to open up there too. I remember growing up, there were a lot of gas stations on opposite corners from each other. They would have “gas wars”. I guess car washes are the big thing now. We have a lot and they are all busy. Some areas have restrictions on washing cars at home, or people live in apartments, so car washes are booming right now.

Walgreens took over a big chain of pharmacies here (Duane Reade) about 10-15 years ago. Rite Aid was a competitor, afaik.
We used to have two RA stores very near me. One closed years ago, but the other one was open until just a year or so ago. There is still a RA open about a quarter mile away. Manhattan is a pedestrian market - no one would go to a pharmacy in a car; you need to be able to walk to things like laundromat, grocery, and pharmacy.
We use independent pharmacies in the neighborhood for prescriptions. I used to use the chain pharmacies for things like deodorant and Halloween candy, but now they've got every dadgum thing locked up - I hate ringing those bells and standing around waiting for someone to unlock the cabinet, and I hate not being able to browse and read labels. I rarely go to chain pharmacies at all anymore for that reason.

I thought that was strange. Back to the OP, in my neighborhood there used to be 2 Rite Aids about 4 blocks from each other. One of the locations used to be a Genovese and is still there. The other location became a Walgreen - which I loved. The pharmacist was great, the store was usually well stocked and while easily walkable they had a parking lot. The Walgreens closed a 3ish years ago and now it's a supermarket.

We have seen a few Rite Aids close as well as a couple CVS stores. My fave pharmacy is Rite Aid- the pharmacy staff knows us as soon as we pull up to the window. Fingers crossed they stay open.

I have been going to my Rite Aid since 1978. I am glad I know the pharmacists and they know me!
