So I’m paying it forward:
“The other day, I visited the grocery store with my dad.
It was just an ordinary errand
Or so I thought.
After we were checking out
I noticed a man near the entrance.
His clothes were worn, and his eyes held stories of hard days.
It was clear he was in need
Possibly homeless.
I watched as others walked passed him
Ignoring his pleas
Their body language withdrawing as they passed him
As if silently conveying “ew gross”
Something stirred within me
Here was hunger…
Not just a need for physical nourishment,
It was a deep, human hunger that connects us all.
The same hunger you or I feel when we've missed a meal
Amplified by his situation of uncertainty and exposure.
Moved by a shared sense of humanity
(And a small dose of being appalled by the behaviour of others)
I approached him with a gift card for groceries.
(I keep a stack of $10 grocery gift cards in my car & purse)
When I handed him the gift card
His reaction was one of pure gratitude
“How much is in it” he asked
“Ten dollars” I replied
His smile a mix of surprise and relief washed over his face
“Thank you” he said “I just want to get something to eat”
In that moment, I was reminded of a powerful spiritual truth
We are all one.
When we see someone else's hardship as our own
We tap into our own empathy and compassion.
Giving isn’t just an act of charity
It’s an expression of unity.
This man's hunger was not his alone to bear
(at least it shouldn’t be)
it belongs to all of us.
For his well being affects the Collective Soul of our Community.
In each act of kindness, no matter how small
We acknowledge this connection.
We affirm that beneath our diverse journeys
We share the same essential needs, the same hopes, the same human spirit.
Let this story be a reminder to us all
Our smallest actions can lead us to the embodiment of the greatest spiritual truths.
Let’s continue to nourish each other in every way we can
Recognizing that in doing so
We nourish our own souls as well
I know some people abstain from giving money to others
Thinking it will be used to buy drugs and alcohol
So I share this alternative
Grocery Gift Cards!
I hope you take the idea
Steal it
Amplify it
And make it your own.
As always, I'm loving you infinitely,
Sharmeen“
