A few months ago, I asked for advice on gardening groups and several people suggested I join FB gardening groups specific to where I live. It ended up being a great suggestion! I found two groups that are relevant to gardening in central/south Florida and in my growing zone (or close to it).
The photos, tips, and tricks are really good, but some of the comments to posts are hilariously off base!
For example, someone will post "my tomato leaves have turned yellow, what can I do to fix this?". The responses are:
"Tomatoes don't grow in Florida! Pull them out!"
"Why are you growing heirloom tomatoes in April? They will all die."
"Too many pests in Florida to grow tomatoes. Everyone should know this."
"Following"
"Spray with BT"
"What is BT?"
"GOOGLE IT"
"You don't need to be rude!"
"My eggplant leaves are also turning yellow, help!"
"Nothing grows in Florida"
And on and on and on and on.
This post is mostly in jest because I know this is just how the internet works, but the amount of "you can't grow xxx in Florida! Why are you bothering?!?" posts annoys me! Yes, you can grow a lot of great veggies in Florida, including tomatoes! I am in zone 10a, and I have almost 200 tomatoes ripening in my backyard garden. This statement is so silly.
Anyway, that is my "the internet is weird" post of the day. Feel free to add yours!

Lol. Yes, that is just how the internet works. My favorites are all the "experts" who come out on those Reels that appear on our FB newsfeed. One of my personal favorites was on one of the Reels that showed a young toddler in a pool...he had clearly had the baby swimming lessons because he got in the water (maybe jumped from the side...we didn't see that part), flipped himself over on his back, and started moving toward the side. The video was taken from the baby's level so the person filming was clearly in the pool. Cue up multiple comments about "OMG! YOU SHOULD NEVER LEAVE A BABY IN A POOL ALONE!!!" always in caps, with multiple exclamation marks. etc. The best reply was someone who said "Yes, so clearly this baby took himself off to Best Buy, bought a camera and tripod, set it up in the pool, then got out and jumped back in so he could film himself."

It’s the same on the baking groups too. Someone will ask some rookie question (and honestly, we’ve all been there so the same questions get asked repeatedly) and people will jump all over them in their responses. I get it, there’s a search bar for a reason but people can (and should) still be kind.

i joined a group for a specific craft cutting machine. nothing world ending right? it was the meanest, snippiest, most unfriendly group i had ever seen. i was mostly a lurker and thank goodness. the sad thing is that the worst person of all was the moderator/person who started the group. she was really something else. i unjoined and joined another much nicer and helpful group.

Happens here on this message board too. I think the absolute best on here is when the content of the thread is in the subject line and someone takes the time to leave a comment that adds zero value. Such as "Can anyone recommend a great lipstick?" And someone will write "I don't wear lipstick." What's the point? Just scroll on by. You must KNOW that thread isn't for you.

I get it, there’s a search bar for a reason but people can (and should) still be kind. This has been happening in the cardmaking groups too. Gina K just made a long post on Saturday to address the issues. Most of the problems seem to come from the people who want to police the group, and quickly respond with “Contact customer service. That’s a product issue.” They even say all they want to see is pictures for inspiration.

I am in a sewing room storage group on FB that is melting down over Kobalt organizers. Okay...inquiring minds would like to know what there is to melt down about in a discussion of organizers? I do not sew, and I do not know the brand Kobalt, so perhaps that's why I have no idea...? haha

Hahaha craftymom101 your examples are spot on! Just change a few key words, and it's relevant to any Facebook group! Lately I have been thinking about leaving my local area Facebook group. I have been shocked to discover just how many nutcase conspiracy theorists I am living amongst. It's so depressing. Everything from chemtrails to a forced cashless society. Ugh.

I joined a Blackstone Griddle group that was mostly men, and they were horrible! It got so bad that some of the women formed a breakaway group—The Women Blackstone Owners Group. The ladies are way nicer and much more helpful.
I haven’t been over there for a while, but now that barbeque season has started, I need to go look for new recipes and ideas.

I mentioned on another thread that I’m in a paper crafting FB group for collage inspiration. I asked about using my scrapbooking paper\ephemera etc in the collages I create. The word “vintage” was in the title of the group, so epic finger wagging, meltdowns and over all admonishments ensued. Apparently vintage and only vintage is allowed and anything else is tantamount to being a cardinal sin. (Insert eye roll here).
This was months ago. I stayed in the group and scroll through posts occasionally. Whoa be the individual that posts anything with even the tiniest non-vintage element. The same handful of members come out in full force and meltdown about the rule breakers. It’s crazy.
As an aside, I bought a couple of the Kobalt mini toolboxes. They are cute. However, they would not good to take to a crop. A) They are pretty heavy for the size. B) They do not have a handle and are awkward to just pick up and move around. Sam’s Club carries a Member”s Mark brand that is slightly larger, has a handle and comes with tools. it would make a great gift for someone graduating from school and moving into a dorm or a new apartment.

People in Facebook groups can get REALLY passionate. One of the more volatile groups I was in was for that show Parenthood. I guess because it tried to portray the normal everyday lives of people that viewers really internalized different aspects and some people took any criticism of the show very personally. I think I lasted half a season before leaving the group.

I belong to a gardening group for my state, as well, and I often roll my eyes at the comments. You described it perfectly, lol.

I am part of that group also. Some great advice there. I am part of a couple book groups. Y'all, some of them need to get a glass of something and stay in their reading corner. They start getting mad over a popular book getting mentioned a lot. Make sure you type the book and author in your post or someone will call you out about it. You don't like a book, well it was my favorite, so you are wrong. It is too funny sometimes. I do get some great suggestions though.

I look occasionally but the fangirling is just over the top most of the time.

pinklady , I think GinaK hit the nail on the head with her response. She acknowledged it's a problem, and maybe by saying something about it, people will recognize themselves and try to do better. Haha, is that wishful thinking?

I know I never posted anything that could have got me banned I just looked for recipes. It’s been months maybe longer. We need to start using our blackstone again.
