I am working on booking a place for out summer vacation. I have been mostly using VRBO - but all of the fees are making my brain hurt.
I am looking for a certain price point and search by that. I put in dates and get a base price, then I click on price details and there are about 3 more fees listed. Then those fees are not "standard" the host fee varies by hundreds of dollars. If I decide it is a good choice I go to check out and some of these require the purchase of insurance or to give the host $5,000 that may or may not be returned.
I am at the point where I am exhausted looking for places to stay. Preference is a cabin or vacation home rental (we have 2 dogs).
Any suggestions on sites that do not have the crazy fees? I feel like I spent the majority of the weekend looking at options but now feel like it was a waste of time.

That has also been my experience with AirB&B like sites which has led to us staying at hotels in the end. We like to vacation with extended family so a place that can accommodate 2-3 families is always a desire.

I really like booking.com
I just used them to book our August Europe vacation.

Search for vacation home rentals in your planned destination on Google. Many owners use a local management portal that will have homes listed without all the fees. You may also find homes there or on social media that allow you to book directly through the owners.

How many days are you planning to stay? If it's just a few, the fees often don't make it worthwhile. Compare it to a hotel, the total amount may be less. And many hotels are pet friendly. We just stayed at a gulf front hotel and the people next to us had their two big friendly dogs on their balcony. The fees on Airbnb, VRBO have really gotten out of hand.
