It has gotten bad enough that I am starting to believe the conspiracy theory that Target is trying to force ppl into curbside and delivery. WOW, I never thought of it for this reason but that makes sense. I would almost believe that theory except for the fact that they put a lot of money into the looks of some of the departments.. mainly the home area.. Magnolia stuff and some Targets (not mine) have the fancy makeup area...

I don't care for my Target nearly as much as I used to since they remodeled it a few years ago. But I will shop there any day over Walmart. Fortunately, very few stores around me have items locked up. Everyone has electronics under lock and key and it has been that way for years.
A very good friend of mine worked in retail for over 30 years. She was the store manager for a high end store in our mall. People would come in with dead bolt cutters to steal purses. Her store quit carrying certain brands of clothing because so much was being stolen. She finally got so fed up she left retail last year.
Our most recent Walmart remodel is already planning on removing most of its self check out stations because of - you guessed it - theft.

I haven't been to Target in ages. I used to love going to Target in one town that I lived in before Covid hit. Then I moved, and the Target in this location is horrible. Clothing is strewn all over the place. Boxes left on the floor for me to trip over. It's like they don't care. I've been there a few times, and each time it was the same. The Walmart near me is pretty nice, so I will stick to shopping there at least for now.
The locking of everything seems unnecessary. I get the most expensive items or pharmaceuticals, but not normal, everyday types of items. Having to track down an associate all the time to unlock items seems very much not worth the trouble. I mean if you want people to stop stealing things, then have better security.

I really think that Walmart is trying to do this. They have only a few cashiers and they have remodeled so there is one line and herd you like cattle. they may have one or two self checks open and if you use them no one there to help when it acts up and won't scan. they do however have two registers at each end of the store for members. So they want you to upgrade to a member or use curbside/delivery - there are over 30 spaces for curbside at our store.
OMG I just said that to my DH about walmart - the are renovating our store and added a bunch of self check out stations BUT they removed the conveyer belts, so there is barely any room to unload your cart, scan your items and then bag your items. DH and I go together, but I feel for the singles and for the moms who have kids that aren't helpful. We are considering looking at other places to grocery shop bc I want to pick out my items. I also have ZERO patience for the Target circle app and I don't have a red card. Before covid i considered maybe the red card, but now that I WFH, I RARELY go into Target. It has a grocery portion, but not enough for me to do my weekly shop (it would be all processed foods, and we try to eat more fresh foods). They recently revamped the Target Circle app so now the discounts are supposedly automatically applied. I haven’t looked at it all that closely yet. I primarily go to two Target stores and both of them have a decent selection of fresh produce, dairy, bakery and meat. It’s pretty rare that I have to actually step foot inside a real grocery store and when I do it’s usually for some really specific thing. Right now the only thing on my grocery store list is fried rice flavor Rice A Roni. For some reason the Targets I go to stopped carrying it. The nice thing about the Red Card (other than the extra 5% discount) is that it gets you free two day shipping if you need to order something from them online and I don’t think there’s a minimum order to get it. I use that option every once in a while, usually if I want something in a size that the two stores I usually go to don’t have in stock.

Yikes I just shopped at my target Friday and it wasn’t like that at all. Target is my favorite place to shop. 1) they have the best carts - each cart has 2 cup holders and a cell phone holder 2) they have a Starbucks and a sample bar in the wine shop, so I can choose my pleasure - coffee or wine while I shop 3) nothing is in locked cases 4) they’ve had killer coupons lately…I was there Friday because it was $20 off any $100 purchase storewide, $15 off $60 home goods purchase, and $10 back when you buy 3 on laundry products and you could stack them all, plus stack them with your target red card 5% off. Got my regular supplies for the month (laundry and cleaning and toilet paper) and saved $45 off what I buy anyway 5) my target is bigger than my Costco. I can buy literally every single thing my family eats or needs there. I have been to some sad, small Targets in other states and see why people are sometimes confused when I say Target is my grocery store though 🤣 No cell phone carrier person here. 1. YES.. best carts with cup holders and cell phone holder 2. Starbucks...but no sample bar in mine 3. Locked cases coming from what I heard 4. Why don't I get coupons? Uhmmp. 5. That is a huge Target! Mine is pretty dang big. The only drawback on groceries is that sometimes they are out of what I need or don't carry it. Selection is smaller. But my grocery store is one of the biggest in the state so there is that. The coupons are in the app if you have the red card I suspect that’s why they have a cell phone holder - because the app is such a big part of shopping there Since redoing the app, some of the circle deals are automatically applied, but not all of them. You had to click on 2/3 coupons I mentioned in the deal I got.

I mean if you want people to stop stealing things, then have better security. But what does that really mean? These big retailers don’t want employees to put their life or safety at risk so they tell them not to confront or stop people if they see someone taking something out of the store that hasn’t been paid for, so having more foot soldiers on the sales floor won’t really help. Does that mean more cameras? Cameras only identify thieves after the fact, at which point the merchandise is already gone. Security guards or receipt checkers posted at the front doors (which people have also said they don’t like, plus it’s a bad look for a store that is trying to be more upscale)? Other than stopping people from coming in all together (which isn’t good if you’re hoping people will make impulse buys while they’re there for something else), what is the answer? I think the idea with having certain things locked up means a potential thief has to come face to face with an employee to obtain the item, which is what most shoplifters try to avoid at all costs. They want to slide into a place under the radar, avoid contact with anyone who might be able to later identify them, and slide out with the stuff without anyone noticing them. As annoying as it is to a regular shopper, I’d be willing to bet it’s a pretty effective deterrent for shoplifters because it slows them down and makes them more noticeable which is the exact opposite of what they want.

Those of you that have items locked up in your stores, do they hand you the items or do they make you pay for them right there and then? My Target doesn’t lock up things, so I don’t know. Yes, electronics you pay for the item in the electronic department, same with the Ulta department. At Walmart, if the item is locked up, they don’t hand it to you until you pay. They walk you to a cash register. At Michael’s they take the item to the front and you pick it up when you check out. That is one reason I don’t buy items that are locked up at Walmart. PITA.

People who park their carts and walk away from them are RUDE I am not much of a complainer, but this, I agree with. The person who drives their cart on one side of the aisle, while looking for something on the other side of the aisle, then walking across to now block more than half the aisle so you can only squeeze through the middle between them and their cart while also trying to dodge them trying to make it back across to their cart. This might seem like a petty complaint, but I have terrible grocery store anxiety to begin with.

After a few mishaps with pick-up orders, I've been going into the store.
First issue was when I did a pick up order for a handheld mirror, coffee, and USB cable. The guy came out from the back with my order and it was the mirror, salami, and a smushed loaf of bread...
The second time, I had done a pick up order for a slow cooker. Got it home, we noticed a slight dent inside. It was fine...until we turned it around to wipe the outside off and noticed a baseball sized dent in the side! I took it back to a different location, and explained the situation. Got my money back, and went to the aisle to find a new one. When I went to pay, I explained to the cashier what had happened. I noticed the register next to her was closed, so I asked if I could pay and then open the new box in front of her so I wouldn't have to come back yet again. She was very surprised I asked, and said most people would've just opened the box in the aisle... I was like... well, I don't want to be a total jerk.

I don't shop at Target, always found it overpriced. But I stopped in a grocery store near the city where I work and noticed infant formula kept locked up near the front of the store. Not sure if that's more about safety or item limits or theft?!

That's more theft related I suspect. The Kroger nearest me had all the infant formula locked up near the front of the store last time I was in there.

I rarely go into any stores since Covid. I do curbside at HEB for groceries and most everything else I order online. I very, very rarely go to Walmart. I used to like Target but I haven't been in ours (not the greatest store) since Covid. I think I need to stop in and see what it's like now. Sometimes I think I need to go back into stores and then I read things like this thread and think nope, I'm good.

I've worked at a couple of big box stores and both had loss prevention personnel. Basically they walked around the store, and had an earpiece listening to someone else who was manning cameras. If the thief was stealing multiple or expensive items, police were called. I'm beginning to think there aren't any people filling those positions anymore.

Does Target not want customers anymore? I know it's petty, but I quit shopping there but a couple times a year when they decided that to get a sale price you had to scan all the stuff in your cart with your phone then add things to your "wallet" then enter it at check out and have your phone code scanned to get the "wallet" prices. I may be misremembering some of the mechanics of it- but it just ticked me off to no end. Especially to go through all that, trying to "teach myself" then go to the damn check out and have to do self check out, and of course do something wrong, then the lady comes over and tells me "oh, make sure you (do this and that and something else in the app) and then I get a few more dollars off that I would have overpaid if I handn't randomly needed help because I bought something that needed a security tag taken off. Just nope. I went in about a week ago while I was out of town to buy something and there was a sale on swimwear (that's what I'd needed - luckily) and it was 30% off. So, I started self check out (only option) and then just pushed the help button to get someone to come over) anyway, she said now you don't have to do some of the stuff, as long as you put in your phone number. This is the same reason I quit shopping at JC Penny, Kohl's, Dick's and Bed Bath and Beyond. I felt like I was getting robbed if I didn't spend 30 minutes preparing to shop and certainly didn't want to buy ANYTHING if I didn't have a 20% minimum coupon. There is nothing in that store I want that bad. Certainly not $45-$100 costume jewelry (WTH- I was in a super long line waiting for self check out so was looking at the jewelry displays. I just had to laugh about that one!

I don't do alot of in person shopping for electronics these days, but not too long ago, I needed a last minute micro sd card while on a trip so ducked into Walmart. I bought it in electronics, and they insisted on putting it in a plastic bag and stapling it closed with the receipt. That bugged me to no end, because why waste a plastic bag??? Then of course, someone wanted to see the receipt on the way out the door (I didn't buy anything else.) They can't even see what is in the bag. It drives me batty being treated like a potential thief, while literally jumping through hoops. If I was a thief, I'd buy something super cheap in electronics, like a big bag of chips, let them staple the receipt. Leave electronics, and take the chips out of the bag, put them down somewhere and stuff something I wanted in the bag and walk out with the bag waded up with the receipt visible. People are going to find a way to steal- it's just frustrating to honest people.

FuzzyMutt you nailed it. I stopped shopping at a lot of stores because of shit like that. The grocery store my husband goes to has "digital" coupons. So I've got to go into the app, "clip" the coupon I want, add it to my wallet, and then input my phone number at the checkout to get the deal. Fuck that noise. Just give the fucking sales price to everyone. I just know the only reason they are doing this is so that they can send targeted marketing emails so I will what? Continue buying what I already am planning to continue to buy? I've had enough. Sometimes I really miss the world 30 years ago.

I know it's petty, but I quit shopping there but a couple times a year I don’t disagree with you about the coupon games, but there aren’t any grocery stores that *don’t* do it nowadays and I find Target the least annoying. Agreed. LOL I do play the game at CVS and Hannaford (my grocery store) because I do have to shop somewhere. CVS is easy because I only buy a few things there, and it's on my way home. So when I get a "good" coupon, I stop and get what I need. Ironically, I LOVE the self check out there, but that's because it's only 2 maybe 3 items at a time and it's easy (for me) Hannaford also has an app where you go in and click coupons, and you get back rewards for store brand items you buy every quarter I think. I sometimes will click the coupons if I think about it, but often don't. I always forget to claim my (maybe) 5$ a quarter rewards. I fully admit I am not a barterer- I like to just pay whatever the thing is. I used to be a couponer, up til about 8 years or so ago. It used to be worth my time. Now, to save $5 on my $250 grocery bill? Nah, I'm good. Money etc aside, we are clearly different style shoppers. I would never use one cup holder, much less two, lol. If I get a Starbucks, it's on the way out the door, and even that would have only been when the Christmas cups came out when it was the big thing in scrapbooking lol Now wine.... I could get into that- but then I'd end up buying the $45 costume jewelry LOL Enjoy your shopping and sipping

I just feel like Target consistently has high dollar coupons that make it worth it. $20 off $100 plus 5% off is the best deal I can get on groceries with the least amount of effort. And I mostly shop curbside pick up because I hate grocery shopping, but about once a month when I have an odd hour or so when it’s not worth it to go home in the time between dropping a child off at an activity and picking the child up from the activity, I’ll do a walk around with a drink of choice, just to see what’s new. Also my kids insist on walking in to check the toy section when they come with me for a pick up. I’m sending this from pick up spot 2 while my kids are inside the store with my Red Card right now 🤣

I use that option every once in a while, usually if I want something in a size that the two stores I usually go to don’t have in stock. I don’t think they do two day shipping and there is almost always a $35 minimum at least most items I look at only ship with $35 and nothing comes quick anymore. These seem to have changed during Covid or just before. I have a Redcard.

I don’t think they do two day shipping and there is almost always a $35 minimum at least most items I look at only ship with $35 and nothing comes quick anymore. These seem to have changed during Covid or just before. I have a Redcard. During Covid there was definitely free 2 day shipping with no minimum. I used it frequently for stuff I couldn’t find. Flour. Box cake mix. Canned beans. It was amazing and faster than Amazon.

Wow we don’t have any of this at our Target or any stores nearby. I’m surprised to read about it and I def would no longer be going if they did. the only thing locked is spray paint.

Tell me about the wine shop. We have 1 aisle of crappy wines at ours. Mine has a little, separate room at the front of the store…about the size of a small gas station with beer, wine, and champagne. There are 4-5 aisles of shelves and 2 walls of cold cases for chilled stuff. There is always a person working in there (I don’t know if they are brand reps or target employees) at a table with a selection of wines or champagnes to sample. The sample cup is a plastic wine cup, not a tiny sample cup. You can walk around the store with the wine and shop, but you can’t take the open wine out the door. Everything in there is cheaper than at the liquor store.

I don’t think they do two day shipping and there is almost always a $35 minimum at least most items I look at only ship with $35 and nothing comes quick anymore. These seem to have changed during Covid or just before. I have a Redcard. I almost never have anything shipped because I go to Target pretty much every week. I just put a $30 pair of pants in the cart on the app and it did have the two day free shipping, plus the 5% discount for using the Red Card. But again, I’m in Target’s hometown and there is a distribution center 20 minutes from my house. If I wanted to do their new subscription thing (which is I think $49 a year) I could get free next day delivery, but that’s not a value to me because I go right past a Target store pretty much everywhere I go.

Mine hasn't had any of those things that I have seen. Yikes. I love Target. It is the black hole of stores for me.

OMG YESSSSSSSSSSSS the target coupon game especially was a 9th level of hell for me!
