First, they put half the store in locked cases. I finally caved and tried to use one today, but no one actually showed up to unlock it, so I will now buy that item at a store that doesn't lock things up...
Then the self-checkout was closed for months, and they only had one cashier open... they finally opened the self-checkout again, I thought that was never going to happen.
Today, when I was walking by electronics some woman with a clipboard stopped me (after she asked if I was finding everything) and then she started grilling me on what cell phone service I use, and what brand it is so she could sell me an upgrade...
Does Target not want customers anymore?

Our local Targets have had the phone carriers since about 2017 or so.
Cleaning supplies, soaps, detergents, shampoos, etc have been locked up for about a year now.
I hate how our Target was redone. Not welcoming and the lighting is horrible.
I do Target pick up at car and love it.

It has gotten bad enough that I am starting to believe the conspiracy theory that Target is trying to force ppl into curbside and delivery.

The Targets around me (there are 3 close by), don’t have anything locked up, except some of the electronic things that have always been locked up. One of the stores even made the local news for having a lot of thief. That store doesn’t open their self-checkout anymore, which bugs me. But nothing is locked up. I shop at Target for certain things because Walmart locks it up. There is an Ulta store inside, and you have to pay for that in the Ulta area, but even those items are not locked up.
The cell phone people have been inside my Target for years. I just don’t walk near them or ignore them.

I was trying to buy a package of tank tops. Maybe I've been lucky and missed the cell-phone salesperson for the last seven years...

I've had a love hate relationship with our Target for quite a while now. They were doing a remodel for months and months and the entire store was a wreck and you couldn't find anything, then they did something else that really pissed me off. I did not step foot in that store for 8 months!!!
I started going in around Christmas time for wrapping paper. I have always loved the home section, and now with my first grandbaby coming the baby section is my go to spot.
We don't seem to have that much stuff locked up at our store, mostly electronics. One of my sons was the loss prevention manager for several years, trust me when I say theft is alive and well. Shoplifters suck.

Yikes
I just shopped at my target Friday and it wasn’t like that at all.
Target is my favorite place to shop.
1) they have the best carts - each cart has 2 cup holders and a cell phone holder 2) they have a Starbucks and a sample bar in the wine shop, so I can choose my pleasure - coffee or wine while I shop 3) nothing is in locked cases 4) they’ve had killer coupons lately…I was there Friday because it was $20 off any $100 purchase storewide, $15 off $60 home goods purchase, and $10 back when you buy 3 on laundry products and you could stack them all, plus stack them with your target red card 5% off. Got my regular supplies for the month (laundry and cleaning and toilet paper) and saved $45 off what I buy anyway 5) my target is bigger than my Costco. I can buy literally every single thing my family eats or needs there.
I have been to some sad, small Targets in other states and see why people are sometimes confused when I say Target is my grocery store though 🤣
No cell phone carrier person here.

We have had the annoying cell phone people since before Covid.
I heard on the radio that all Targets will start enclosing a bunch of stuff... not just high theft stores, all stores.
No issues on self check except we only have four of them and usually one is broken. So the line can get long fast or you can walk past 15,984 registers to the other side of the store.

Honestly, I haven't set foot in Target since 2020 but do curbside at least once every two weeks (haven't set foot in Walmart in at least 5 years before 2020) But not going into Target has saved me probably thousands of dollars and thousands of hours. I honestly don't miss the task of shopping in store at all. I do know that when we had a family member do a road trip from Southern Alabama to Alaska a lot of targets and walmarts they stopped in, most items were locked up because of theft. I am realy surprised more stores haven't moved to locking things up with how back shoplifting /theft has become.

Oh and I also do Target order pick up because the self checkout is now 19 items or less and only 1 or 2 checkers open.
Last time I went 3 weeks ago with DD for her to get some make up, it was 8:32am and only 5 self check outs were open and no regular check outs. So everyone (11 people) were in line for that even though 6 had a cart full of items.
Why open with no regular checkers??

I can't imagine putting my cell phone in a holder in my cart. Maybe because I *park* it sometimes when I'm looking for something. Maybe you don't let it out of your sight. Ours hasn't locked up any of the things y'all are talking about (except phones/etc.)

I would never use it because it is so easy to grab and run, you. And you could even be standing right there.

They literally *just* opened one near me (on like April 15th) and I don't think there's anything new or different locked up.

People who park their carts and walk away from them are RUDE and I don’t hesitate to push them out of the way. Not sorry. Shopping at target is a pretty interactive experience, scanning things in the app to see if there’s a circle deal, so it makes perfect sense they’d have a holder.

lock ups are definitely increasing. i know they have done extensive research on what should be locked up but some stuff don't make sense to me.

Don't shop there regularly, but stopped at Target for travel size toiletry items just last night. They had a handwritten, whiteboard sign near the entrance that said, "Come Inside for Curbside Pickup" - that tells me a lot about the state of their customer service.

I live in Target’s hometown and there must be close to a dozen Target stores of various sizes within about a 20 minute radius of my house. The only things that are locked up here are the same electronics stuff that’s locked up everywhere (video games, phones, gaming consoles, etc.). It’s one of my favorite places to shop. I use the Target Circle app and have the RedCard and stack allll the discounts all the time. I was in there just last week and saved over $25 in that one trip alone plus got a $10 gift card for buying three household items (two packs of TP and some Swiffer refills that I needed anyway). The ones I go to most often aren’t bigger than a Costco though. I don’t think I’ve ever been in one that size. I buy most of my groceries at Costco but use Target to fill in most of the gaps for what Costco doesn’t sell.
I do think they are trying to get more people to use drive up and delivery probably because it requires fewer employees to make the same sale and there isn’t the same risk of consumer theft. The stores by me have been hurting for help for a good while now which explains the lack of cashiers, and they did put a limit of ten items or less on the self checkouts some time ago due to catching people skip scanning in those lanes.
I’m pretty sure the people hawking phone service aren’t Target employees, just like the ones at Costco selling phone service work for AT&T.

Since Covid and the new remodel, Target is no longer my happy place. The Ulta store/regular toiletry items are all mixed up and take up a lot of real estate, whereas the home shop is miniscule and not fun to browse. It's never been as tidy as it was before the pandemic. I have no reason to get Starbucks and browse. I have no idea about curbside pickup, but I don't see people doing it the few times I'm there. I've never seen anyone with a clipboard trying to sell stuff.

No cell phone providers at mine. But they seem to constantly stock shelves during the day causing tons of congestion. That with the locked up items keeps me from shopping at my Target.

It has gotten bad enough that I am starting to believe the conspiracy theory that Target is trying to force ppl into curbside and delivery. I really think that Walmart is trying to do this. They have only a few cashiers and they have remodeled so there is one line and herd you like cattle. they may have one or two self checks open and if you use them no one there to help when it acts up and won't scan. they do however have two registers at each end of the store for members. So they want you to upgrade to a member or use curbside/delivery - there are over 30 spaces for curbside at our store.
ETA: I rarely go to Target as the one closest to my house is tiny. They don't have enough registers/self checks. I haven't noticed tons of stuff other than electronics locked up at Target but our Walmart has tons of stuff including mens pants, shirts undies socks, its a bit crazy. I have gotten to where I try to avoid both Target and Walmart whenever possible. sometimes you just need something and they are the best option so I just deal but then think was that really worth it most of the time. I used to love Target but it is saving me money.

I no longer go to Target. I can’t stand the locked areas. It takes forever to get someone to open a lock in order to get a toothbrush.

I order everything I used to get at Target from Amazon. I haven't been in a Target in years although I want to go to myshelly 's Target with the wine. I don't think she's too far from me so maybe I would hit up that Target.

People who park their carts and walk away from them are RUDE and I don’t hesitate to push them out of the way. Not sorry. I make sure to park it out of the way, never in the aisle where someone would be hindered by it. Their carts are so big and cumbersome to me that I can barely navigate it through some of their stuff.

I only ever do target pick up. I don’t like people. I couldn’t tell you want the inside of my target looks like or if stuff is locked up or not.
I refuse to shop Walmart
I do Ulta and Joann and home depot curbside pick up too.
I save soooo much money doing that vs going into the stores. If only Costco had curbside 😂

At Michaels I'd noticed the most random things locked up vs. not, specifically in the rotary cutters/self-healing mats aisle. The normal Fiskars replacement blades were secured, but the slightly more expensive titanium ones were not? Neither is a high ticket item so I can only assume it's based on theft patterns what does or does not get locked down.
I do appreciate that the Copic markers are in a secured case, since that means they won't be messed with before I buy mine. Now if only they'd do the same with the POSCAs, because those are even more dicey if not recapped properly!

OMG I just said that to my DH about walmart - the are renovating our store and added a bunch of self check out stations BUT they removed the conveyer belts, so there is barely any room to unload your cart, scan your items and then bag your items. DH and I go together, but I feel for the singles and for the moms who have kids that aren't helpful. We are considering looking at other places to grocery shop bc I want to pick out my items. I also have ZERO patience for the Target circle app and I don't have a red card. Before covid i considered maybe the red card, but now that I WFH, I RARELY go into Target. It has a grocery portion, but not enough for me to do my weekly shop (it would be all processed foods, and we try to eat more fresh foods).

Mine is pretty dang big. The only drawback on groceries is that sometimes they are out of what I need or don't carry it. Selection is smaller. But my grocery store is one of the biggest in the state so there is that.
