My father insisted all his shirts have 2 pockets. (He did not wear knit shirts). He said a shirt with one pocket was like a bra with one cup and he would not wear a shirt with only one pocket, or no pockets. He was not a smoker. He had a case for his glasses (reading only) in one pocket and a pen in the other.
DH is the same. He is not as adamant as my father was--he will wear a one pocket shirt, but doesn't like it. He will wear a knit shirt without pockets, but prefers a shirt made of fabric (not knit) with 2 pockets.
Do the men in your life care? I think it might be age related--if they grew up in the era of no knit shirts for men then pockets matter more to those men. Our sons are all adults and I have no idea if they feel this way or not.

No he doesn’t care either way. I don’t think it’s something I’ve ever heard him mention be honest.

Yes! Dh is adamant that he will only wear pocket t-shirts. I ask, what, you don’t have enough pockets in your Levi’s? I’ve asked him if he’d like a man-purse, but he doesn’t answer back! Must be a holdover from his very-long-ago smoking years. All of his button up dress shirts, mostly Western style, also have 2 front pockets.
Ds 28 is the same way re his T-shirts, but I know where he gets it from…

I don't think dh or ds have shirts with ANY pockets. DD17 has a few (men's shirts) with pockets because she's a thrift store shopper and that's usually what she finds.

OMG yes, DH gets stabby if he has to wear a shirt without a chest pocket. He wouldn’t care if there was one or two but there has to be at least one for his phone. He specifically likes the Duluth Trading V neck pocket long tail t-shirts and has a huge stack of them in various stages of decay because that’s what he wears day in and day out to work. He laments the fact that most dressier (by his standards) fishing shirts and golf shirts don’t have a chest pocket because he doesn’t like carrying his phone in his pants pockets but also doesn’t want to look like he’s on his way to work.

My dad insisted on two pockets, but my son, and grandson don't care what the shirt has as far as pockets are concerned. But they must have cargo pants with lots of pockets.

My husband was very particular as well. He wore western shirts that had pockets with snap-down flaps so when he bent over nothing would fall out of the pocket. He also wanted the snap buttons down the front of the shirt so he did not have to worry about losing buttons.

My father always has worn shirts with one pocket---and that included t-shirts. He's never worn graphic tees. Always solid tees with one pocket. Early on in my life he did smoke, and he did keep cigarettes in that pocket. But he quit over 35 years ago, now, but he was just used to having that pocket where he could put something important and know it would be safe until he got home. His pants pocket are were he carries a pocket of change, his keys, a pocket knife, his wallet, now a phone, but that shirt pocket is for misc. stuff. Typically papers. His memory isn't what it used to be, so he now carries a tiny notebook and pen with him, and if someone tells him something important, he writes it down, tears out the sheet of paper, folds it in half, and sticks it in the shirt pocket. When he wears dress shirts I sometimes catch him reaching up for the pocket that isn't there, which gives me a little chuckle, because it's such a habit of his to have that pocket. Really, I think the guy just needs a purse.

DSO rarely wears button-up shirts. He spends his life in t-shirts, unless we're going somewhere with a dress code (wedding / funeral / fancy restaurant). And even then, I don't think any of his button-up shirts have pockets. I don't think the number of pockets on a shirt is something that has ever crossed his mind.

My FIL always wanted snap, not button, up shirts with snap pockets. He used to carry his smokes in there, he quit eventually. But had paper, pen, cell phone in there. He's in LTC now and wears tshirts and I had to find ones with a pocket. He puts things or even the remote in there.

I honestly have never given a single thought to pockets on a man's shirt. Pockets in women's pants? YES. lol
I don't think my sons have any dress shirts with pockets, but I've half a mind to go look. And DH... I think his shirts have one? His denim or flannel shirts may have two.
