Hey all you Peas with a 4 year old boy, can you help a grandma out? His 4th birthday is coming up. What does your 4 year old like? We’ve gotten him Magna Tiles and Yota (is that what it’s called? The little machine that plays songs or reads stories using the little cards…). Any ideas would be appreciated!

Do you live close? If so I'd suggest an experience like a trip to McDonalds or the zoo or a kid friendly movie or a picnic in the park. And take pictures. Most kids at his age have a boatload of toys that they will never remember.
My great-grands have an entire room that is just a play room. So many toys you can't walk through it. And that was just two of them, the third was born in November.

I agree with gramma about an experience if you're close by or will be visiting soon. If not - maybe a couple of books and record yourself reading them?

You can also get books that have the child's name and another person in them. Great-grand-daughter was delighted.

Pigeon books by Mo Willems. A water table for outside play. Animal sets like ones from National Geographic are really great. They have rocks and grass and lots of animals. The kid for the bucket doubles as a scenery piece. I also agree about experiences.

My grandson spends hours playing with tubes he sets up and drops marbles through. Sorry I don't know the actual name. He also has a kids tablet he likes to play games on. For experiences, we have a llama farm nearby that he loves and also aquariums. I took him out on a "pirate ship" adventure last year and he loved that.

How many sets of Magna tiles does he have? I just found DS’s this week and it must be at least 3 or 4 sets. He liked to dream big!

My parents recorded themselves reading books for my kids one year for Christmas. They were Christmas stories. They were a huge hit. www.hallmark.com/baby-and-kids/kids-books/recordable-storybooks/Other than that I vote for an experience with Grandma if local or maybe a membership/experience to do with parents if not local.

A water table will be a big hit. I was going to suggest a water table as well, ours was well used. of course an experience if you're nearby is always a good idea.

My nephew loved stomp rockets at that age. Another good idea is a strider balance bike. I wish we would have gotten our kid one of those at that age. All the kids I know who had one learned to ride a two wheeler without training wheels so much faster and easier.

Take him to build a bear and have a fun day out. My mom did this with my son, and they had the best time. My son (17) still has the bear and remembers the day. Bonus - you can buy more clothes or accessories for other occasions or trips out.

Apparently there’s now one that you can make to put little cars on.

His was from Discovery Toys, but I know there are a lot more choices now.

Pokémon cards. I don't see the appeal personally but kids all love them. They are good for those quiet times.

Start a college fund for him. Something that can be used anywhere, not just locally to the 4 yr old. The parents will appreciate it. You could contribute on holidays or Tuesday's.....whenever you'd like.
Then take him somewhere for an experience.

All great ideas - I love the experience suggestion, my grands all love spending the night with us.
They also love Tonies, Paw Patrol toys, PJ Masks toys, hot wheels, water table, squirt guns, books, balance bikes, art supplies

My oldest grandson just had his fourth birthday the end of April. We bought him his first “big boy” bicycle (with training wheels). Also a 6’ inflatable dinosaur sprinkler, a big 3-D dinosaur kite, a dinosaur beach towel… can you tell what he loves? Lol.
For past Christmas and birthday gifts, we’ve done a lot of experiences. Memberships to museums and the zoo. Tickets to shows (Blippi and the like). Paying for swimming lessons.
The magnatiles mentioned were part of his Christmas and a huge hit!

I want add Duplo. They have really cool sets there not cheap but kids will play with them for a long time. We have 5th grade buddies in our classroom and the 5th graders love to play with them with the first graders. I heard one of them complain one time they wanted them in their classroom. LEGO in general or great but for a 4-year-old Duplo is the way to go and they will play with them long after you think they would.

I loved my Duplo up until around 7-8 and would still pull it out to play with, after that I transitioned to Lego. It was then passed onto a younger cousin, and as far as I know is still in service out there, somewhere. That said I would ask the parent(s) what toys their child enjoys the most. Adding to an existing collection usually pans out better than starting a new one.

Thank you everyone for the great suggestions! We started college fund when he was born and add to it for every gift giving occasions. I also give him a special book for birthdays and christmases so will continue those. I’m researching all of these other suggestions. Thanks so much! (Keeping this list for Christmas ideas too!.

Playmobil sets, Lego Duplo sets, matchbox cars, Play-doh, and art supplies are always a big hit with that age group.
A Kiwi Crate subscription would be awesome. My kids received Kiwi Crates for years and every month was a hit! I think we had one "dud" box in the entire 5-6 years we received boxes.
