With the prices of scrapbook stuff going to ridiculous places I have been thinking about getting a color printer... I last one I had ticked me off when it "expired" itself right after I spent $80 on ink cartridges...
I own: a laser printer for kids' school stuff, and general printing. I love it because the cartridges last forever.
A photo printer for when I forget to have a photo printed with Shutterfly, or the kids need a photo for school projects at the last minute (happened just this week.)
A color printer for sublimation printing (I am considering starting an Etsy store and selling mugs.) It's actually a color printer converted to a sublimation printer, and can't be converted back to a regular color printer...
I don't think I have enough outlets or space for another printer but more and more it seems like it would come in handy.
I don't know... is four printers too many?
DH also has a 3D printer, I forgot about that one since I don't use it.

I think if you have the space and money and you'll use all of the printers...why not?
For me, one is sufficient but I don't print school stuff or photos - just journalling and the occasional journalling card or the like for my pages and sketches... mostly sketches, lol.

Is that kind of like asking how many jackets is too many? (as a fellow PNWer you probably know what I mean!) They all serve very specific purposes and although, yes, maybe you could make do with one you would be limited in what you could do or how well you could do it. And you already have these ones that are working for you, and probably wouldn't gain much by selling any of them.
Could the new color printer also print photos? Maybe. But would it make sense to get rid of the photo printer you have and like? I'm guessing probably not.
I'm with Linda ^ ^

Printers are like children. It is up to you to decide what is too many. . Unless you collect printers like the Duggers. Nineteen is too many.

I have a very old Brother black & white laser printer, an Epson ET-3850 Eco-tank, an Epson PictureMate PM-400 and a Canon CP 1500. (Oh - and an HP Spocket portable but I don’t count that because it’s not really much of a printer. Ha ) Now what was that about having too many printers? Now if this conversation was about the possibility of having too many paper trimmers - I plead the 5th.

Haha, my husband asks me this question sometimes. I have a B&W laser (a workhorse, also good for foiling), a color laser (my favorite printer, it's 15 years old and a workhouse, prints beautifully, but buying 4 toner cartridges is not cheap. The toner does last years, though), a mini photo printer (I no longer use it because the ink was too expensive per print), and a Canon TS9500 photo/craft printer (awesome).
Sometimes I dream about adding an eco tank printer but frankly, I just don't have the room.

ONE, since I'm always struggling to get the d*#^$ thing to connect, print, etc....UGH! I exclusively scrapbook & get photos professionally printed so only use the home printer for journaling.

Save for the printers we use frequently for convenience (journaling/photos), I think a printer earns “too much” status if it costs more to maintain it than it would to have what you need printed professionally. I wouldn’t purchase a photo printer for large photos if I only printed them a couple of times a year. The ink cartridge would dry up/malfunction before I even came close to getting the number of photos printed to make up for the cost. I’d love a laser printer, but does the amount I would use it justify the space and the cost?

I think that’s a determination you have to make based on your space and priorities.
Do you have sufficient space to allocate to multiple printers and the budget to maintain them? Does having multiple printers restrict or facilitate your workflow? Do you value convenience of printing in your own space and controlling the output over the convenience of ordering prints and either picking them up or having them shipped to you? IMO these are the types of questions you have to consider to make an informed decision.
I’d keep the sublimation printer due to its specific purpose and get a higher model EcoTank. The initial cost factor is outweighed by the low price of inks in the long run. That said, that’s what works for my print volume, space, and priorities. What’s a value for me may not be for you and my priorities differ from yours. If having multiple printers works best for your needs you do you. At the end of the day you have to be happy and productive in your space.

four seems reasonable. i have a canon pixma color printer, a canon selphy, 2 hp pm 400 (one for home, one for vacation home) and one that prints off photo stickers. each one fits a specific need. i have the room and like the versatility.
if the canon pixma dies, i will probably replace with an eco tank.
