What would you tip for a large (19 entrees) breakfast order that you are picking up? Scheduled pick up time is 90 minutes after they open and the total bill pre-tip is $319.

Someone is going to have to take some time with this one. I think 20% should be reserved for when you are actually getting an in person service, but that is a lot of food. I would do 15%. That would be $48 and at $24 an hour extra (for 2 hours), that seems like a decent tip. I know the tips can be split, but people cooking and not waiting tables do get more per hour.

I ordered a similar meal though it was Mexican for pick up and I’m embarrassed to say I can’t remember what I tipped. I’m guessing it was like 10-15%.

I’m in the $60 camp. And honestly, I would probably tip $65 because I tend to tip 20% for pick up and then round up. This is a lot of food to make while they’re cooking for their tables so I would not skimp in this situation.

Honestly? Why do we tip on take out? I have such tipping-fatigue anymore. I am not sure if I would tip at all for a big takeout order. The last time I did one of these larger takeout orders, my son and I had to load it in the car ourselves. Why should I tip for that? Disclaimer: years ago I worked as a waitress while I was in college. It was a very formal restaurant and a lot of the food was made tableside. 15% was a good tip.

I usually only tip on take out if they went a little above and beyond. In other words, did they either provide or ask if you wanted utensils or condiments? NAPKINS for goodness sakes. I can't tell you how many times during the early days of COVID when we "couldn't be together that my SO and I would pick up breakfast or lunch and go sit at two different picnic tables to eat it. It used to drive me crazy that I'd often end up with an omelet and no fork or napkins unless I specifically asked.
If I have to ask, that's not service. If I have to ask, and it's a production, that's not good service.
On that take out order, maybe I'd tip $20 max.
FWIW- When I pick up pizza, if they don't offer me napkins and plates, I don't tip. And if they do, I still only tip a couple dollars.
Sit down it's different- although I've cut back to about 20% these days. I used to tip 30-40%, but prices have gotten ridiculous. Not the servers fault of course, but I just can't justify it any more.

But 19 entrees, packing them up, having them all ready at the specified time, etc. That’s a shit ton of work. I think that merits a tip, regardless.

On a personal take out order where I go in and pick it up for one or two people? No, I don't tip. Or I might tip a few bucks. But on an order this size, I absolutely tip. They are preparing 19 meals, while serving all those in the restaurant at the same time. It's a lot of work. I would tip $50-60. We bring in lunch once a month at my work. Every 4th month we do pizza. I order 15-20 pizzas. They are usually here within 45 minutes (I do delivery on this one). It usually runs $50-60. That's on top of the delivery fee I'm already paying. But it's a no brainer. Who wants to go and load that many pizzas in their car? Not me.

I ended up adding a $40 tip when I placed the order online and gave them another $40 when I picked up because it was immaculate service. Everything was ready to go right on the dot, labeled clearly, packaged and bagged for easy transport, the owner met me at the front and introduced himself, they carried everything to my car, etc.

If it's just for me, I usually tip 10% because they had to package up my meal and have it ready for me.
On your order, I probably would have tipped 20% because that is a lot of meals.

It was frustrating to say the least because people who didn't tip for take-out either don't realize or don't care that it actually cost the server money. Maybe it's different now but back then I had to pay into tip share 3% of my sales.

I am usually firmly 💯 in the camp of I do not tip for takeout.
But that IS a very big order and I could see wanting to tip bc it’s such a big order.
I definitely would not have given a full 20%, much less more than 20%.

But I can’t imagine not in this situation, especially because I placed the order after they closed yesterday, so they didn’t know about it until they got there today. Plus I wanted to pick up smack-dab in the middle of their busiest time of day. I have never seen restaurants give discounts for large groups. To the contrary, It’s always more expensive in my experience, and usually have automatic gratuities.

That is what a tip should be, discretionary based on the situation. Yet it has become an onus on the consumer to consider what the server might be paid, if the restaurant was busy or not, if you asked for extra help and whether that merits anything. It's exhausting and has imo almost ruined the appeal of dining out. And now even takeout! And yes, restaurants charge more for serving more customers. It is contrary to the way any other business operates. I understand the logic to some degree but when it comes to take out orders, they are already making the additional money on those orders and not having to provide all the services they do for a customer who dines in.
