I'm diving into some junk journaling type stuff. I have been practicing a bit and ready to maybe dive into tearing books apart to use for covers. I am looking for free/cheap old books (especially with cool pictures inside). Any places you can suggest would be great.
I called our local library and they don't have any sales or freebies (at least for now)
I am scouting estate sales as they seem to be the best place so far.
Garage sales I know will be a place to start as well and they are getting ready to gear up.
Am I overlooking anything else. I haven't really been able to get my hands on anything really old though. I feel like there's an abundance of books but I can't seem to find the right places to look, for cheap.

Goodwill store/Savers/other thrift stores?
EtA: Also consignment shops, but not the classy ones that are partway to antique stores -- the kind of cruddy ones attached to junk removal services.

A lot of thrift shops don't even accept books any more and most old ones will probably go straight to recycling. It seems there's a huge quantity of books coming out of Boomer houses as they downsize, mostly stuff from the 70s-2000s that's pretty worthless... Finding stuff that's old and cool but also OK to dismantle is a challenge. Do you have any Little Free Libraries in your area? I would second the suggestion to ask on Buy Nothing - someone may be thrilled to get rid of some, although you might get boxes of books you can't use as a package deal. Do you have a neighborhood Fbk page you could ask on? Library book sales are usually the best source to my knowledge, but I know a lot of libraries are not finding such things to be worth the hassles any more. Good luck with the estate and yard sales They might be your best bet!

My local antique mall still has quite a few old books. I recently bought a dictionary, and old arithmetic book ( circa 1960) and a cookbook for $1 each.

There are some of the little libraries.. I will look in those (and I can put some books back into them as well).. there is one just by my daughter's house where I walk my grandson. Thanks!

Most areas have used book stores. There is one not too far from me, and a Google search showed me a few more, so I know they still exist. Used book stores may be a bit hard to find, but they are out there, and they might be your best bet to find what you want. They are usually located in smaller, older strip mall areas. Just Google “used bookstores near me.”
Some only accept and sell used paperbacks, so call and ask before you go.

I find the best deals at church rummage sales and used book sales. They usually have $5 to fill a bag, sometimes on the second day to clear inventory.

I'm lucky, my local library has a used book sale every quarter and the 2nd day of the sale they have a brown bag sale, where you fill a brown bag with books and it's $5. Like others have said, Goodwill, any thrift store really, will have tons of books. Garage & estate sales, post in your local buy nothing group, etc.

If you have a Free Little Library near you sometimes there are some older books in there. There is a website that tells you where the free Little libraries are.

I have an extensive collection of old books for junk journaling. Thrift stores, estate sales, garage sales, the recycling center and antique stores are where I find most of mine. If I;m looking for something specific like large books with botanicals or the like there is a great used bookstore int he next town over that I haunt. Granted they are more expensive - I've paid up to $8 per book but if its something I want and will use I;m happy to pay it. Also if you are looking for Edith Holden books you will definitely have to apy a bit more. I paid $6 for a fabulous "horsey" book that im just so tickled about. As you get into junk journaling more you fill find you favorite places in your area. I rarely find anythng in the thrift stores. We have a huge recycling center right down the street from my home. They have a huge bin where they just dump old books. It takes some digging but I;ve found a LOT of books there.

I'm learning as I go.. never heard of Edith Holden, so going to check her out to see what her books look like. I actually was at the thrift store last night and while the book area was mostly a miss, I found a bag of envelopes/cards/postcards for $2 and it was a great selection of goodies. Edited: WOW those Edith Holden images are BEAUTIFUL... so for sure will keep an out out on those...
