Just curious about what teenage baby sitter should be paid per hour. I am long past needing one, but just wondering what parents pay in 2024.

$22-28 per hour. I’m very lucky and I have a roster of babysitters who are family who do it for free. I did it for free for them when I wasn’t a parent so it’s payback for that time.

I think it varies quite a bit depending on location, age of sitter, qualifications of sitter, etc.
I have worked as a nanny and also do date night babysitting. I'm a mature woman with 2 grown sons, a degree in Elementary Education and many hours of experience in caring for children from birth through adolescence. I charge $20/hour for 1 child and add $3/hour for each additional child.
I live in Ft Worth, TX and there are college girls who will do it for less, so I feel like I need to keep my rates a little more competitive with them. Many of the parents who hire me complain about the college girls not being reliable, being on their phones all the time, etc.
It's funny, because I remember starting to babysit at the age of 12 (I'm 64 now.) and charging 50 cents/hour.

It absolutely varies based on location and probably the income level where you live.

Ooh, I'm curious to hear answers to this one. It's been a long time since I thought about babysitting rate, and it's always interesting to me to see how things vary from place to place.

It’s been several years since we paid someone to watch our kid, but back then (2016-17ish) I think we paid my friend’s neighbor kid (I think she was about 12-13 at the time) about $15 an hour. My kid has zero interest in babysitting. She would rather mow grass or shovel snow, LOL.

I don't know what the going rate is in my area now (probably a lot ) but I'm also old enough to remember being paid .50 cents per hour. And I used to sit for a family with three kids! omg. Although they did pay me a bit more than that when I got older. But still.... I remember the first time my dd came home from a babysitting job when she was maybe 13 or so, with a check for a very large amount of money. Wow. That's when I realized times had changed. haha My dh and I never left our kids with a paid teen babysitter because we were lucky enough to have family nearby, plus we never went out very much back when the kids were little.

.50 way back when in my younger ears - I do remember charging 1.25 in my HS years.
I didn't know it was so $$ to use a babysitter these days.

This is so interesting! I just retired and might just have to start babysitting. It pays far better than substitute teaching!

Back when I was babysitting in the dark ages, I made $1.50 an hour. i can't remember how much we paid for DS but I don't think it was more than $5-10 per hour.

I went from working as a sub to being a part time nanny. in our town, there is big demand for part time, after school care. 5 yrs ago, I made $25 an hour for one, $30 an hour for two. course I am a mature adult with tons of experience, background checked, first aid, etc.. I also did the 50 cents an hour as a teen.
I set my own schedule so it was nice. one of my old families actually called to see if I was still available to do an occasional school pickup.. I said yes except I am out of town a lot since being retired.

I really have no idea. I remember in 1999, I was charged $6 an hour (we usually paid less) and thought that was so much money. We really didn't have the extra money at the time to make it a regular thing. We went 18 months without a babysitter other than daycare.

I'm in Seattle, and I think this varies by who you are hiring and the number of kids, but for your kind of standard-issue 1-2 kids I'd expect about $25/hour for a one-off babysitting gig. For a regular job that was more of a nanny position, that would be more, obviously.

I live in a beach city within Los Angeles County. We use three different babysitters for our toddler so.
30 year old who is full time nanny by day - $30/hr
Two teenage girls who are seniors in high school - they each gave their rate at $20/hr but we pay them $25/hr since we pay our other babysitter so much and my husband was childhood friends with their fathers.
Daycare is almost as much as our mortgage for M-F 7am-6pm.
Like others I remember making a dollar or two an hour in late 80s.
