Hi fellow peas👋 As you can see I'm one of those shy peas and mostly lurk under the leaves. I'm 53 and well into my menopause journey. Thanks to my sil, I have found an amazing resource called Menopause Chicks, that I feel inspired to share with the pod. Shirley Weir, founder of this amazing site, is on a mission to dispel the myths and mis-information flying around about all things menopause. Please check out her website, Facebook group and Instagram. You will be glad you did!! www.menopausechicks.com

Hi there!
I guess I am post-menopausal. I never quite got the schedule of things!! (pre, post, somewhere in between)
I skated through with not much of anything disrupting my normal life. I will check out that website though.
At my last annual the doctor told me that I have vaginal atrophy. So that's cool (not). But, I guess if that is my only menopausal symptom I am pretty happy with that. She wanted to put me on HRT and I declined. I didn't want to increase my risk of cancer just so my who-ha wouldn't be dry. No thanks!! (BTW, that is the first time I had ever seen that doctor and I am not sure I will continue seeing her)

(BTW, that is the first time I had ever seen that doctor and I am not sure I will continue seeing her) It won't. You have a greater chance of dying from cardiovascular disease than all cancers combined.. Local vaginal estrogen has no increased risk. Even when the WHI (women's health initiative) falsely stated that HRT increased the risk of breast cancer. It showed an increase absolute risk of 0.8% and that was in women well into menopause taking synthetic HRT, and bioidentical is even a lower risk. Many things, lifestyle like smoking, drinking, stress, diet have a larger risk fro cancer. Many other prescription medications have more risks than HRT. Birth control pills and IUDs increase your risk also. You could have symptoms you're not even aware are hormone related, depression, anxiety, dry eyes, frozen shoulder, joint aches, fatigue, brain fog, thinning hair, heart palpitations, UTIs, etc. HRT actually helps bone, heart and brain health. Perimenopause is the up to 10 year period before you hit menopause. Menopause is 1 day, the day marking 1 year of no periods. The rest of your life is post menopause, but usually just called menopause. The average age of menopause is 51. Thanks for the website recommendation OP. I have learnt a lot from Dr Lisa Mosconi, book is The Menopuase Brain Avrum Bluming and Carol Tavris's book Estrogen Matters Dr Louise Newson's book The Definitive Guide to the Perimenopause and Menopause Dr Mary Claire Haver's book The New Menopause I enjoy their Instagram accounts and podcasts (for those that have them) Other Instagram accounts are Dr Kelly Casperson, a urologist Dr Carrie Jones Dr Corrine Menn

HRT absolutely can increase and cause breast cancer. One of the leading breast cancer surgeons in the United states treated someone very close to me for just that. Plus, my home nurse lost her mother to HRT related breast cancer. The vaginal creams are supposed to be Ok to use, but I'm too afraid to risk it. Oral HRT is dangerous, despite what you might have heard.
I prefer to use acupuncture for hot flashes and it works just fine. As for the desert conditions down below I'm trying not hormonal stuff.

She discusses more than just HRT.
Explains what is happening with hormones and why. What happened regarding the WHI and the resulting mis information What are our options - HRT (types, methods od delivery), vitamins and supplements, exercise, pelvic floor therapy, etc Questions to take to our doctors that help us to evaluate our options and the associated risks Scripts to take to our doctors to get the help we need. Not just HRT!

Menopause is the worst!! I'm in the middle of it right now and I'm miserable. I am unable to use any HRT as I am being treated for high risk breast cancer. My insurance won't cover acupuncture for menopause so I'm just managing the best I can which is not well at all.
Thank you for the resources

I'm surgically menopausal after a hysterectomy 4 years ago. While I don't miss the periods at all, I have horrible hot flashes and can't use any hormones due to the type of breast cancer I had.

I also went through surgical menopause at 43. It's been 16 years. I didn't start HRT until about a year after my cancer treatment ended. My husband asked to go to my next doctor's appointment with me and brought up his concerns about how I was handling (or not handling!) the hormone fluctuations. It saved my marriage, probably my job, and likely my life. The brain fog was so bad I ran stop signs. I was paranoid thinking my husband was cheating and I was going to get fired. The hot flashes and night sweats were horrible. I stayed on HRT for 5 years then went off to see how my body was doing. I never had any issues after.
I do have dryness and my hair has definitely thinned. It's still thick by normal standards, but thinner than pre-menopause. Lack of female hormones definitely ages you, but looking my age is a small price to pay for being alive.

I just turned 54 and technically I'm still in perimenopause (5 months since my last period), but my hormones were checked and my doctor said that should be my last period. I just started hormone replacement therapy and it has really helped. I had no idea how crappy I felt until I reached out to my doctor. The more information we have, the better we all are. Thanks for sharing with other peas! Knowledge really is power.

Same here. Breast cancer in 2021, womb cancer in 2023 (second primary, not a met). I have been hot flushes central due to the aromatase inhibitors I have to take to stop the breast cancer coming back. HRT is not an option. But sage, which is not a hormone and doesn't interfere with hormones, is helping me. It was recommended by a cancer doctor who is also a natural health specialist. There aren't many of those about.

Hysterectomy at 36 but left an ovary so I could go through menopause naturally instead of in my 30's. I have hot flashes, menobelly, bloating, aches, all the fun stuff. I am drinking greens and taking a supplement to help with the aches and pains. Both help, but not in the extreme I am looking for!
I can not loose any weight, that has been a real struggle.

I enjoyed "Menopausing" by Davina McCall ... lots of story sharing (she's a tv presenter in the UK and her audience sent her their stories), lots of reassurances, lots of "me too" but in a good way! And segments written by an MD, as well.

I will be 54 next week, and I have my hormone levels checked every year, and, they say I am still not in menopause! I have an IUD, so, no periods, but, I thought for sure all the symptoms I have been having for years (joint pain, trouble sleeping, thinning hair) were menopause related. If I haven’t started yet, I am scared to see what is coming 🥺

My last period was probably 3 or 4 years ago (I’m 53). I had no symptoms until last summer (hot flashes). They aren’t bad, but it does affect my sleep in the summertime. I recently got the dry eyes and the joint pain. I didn’t know those were menopausal-related health issues, but it makes sense. Lack of moisture everywhere, I guess. I’ve read quite a few books, but additional resources are always good. Thanks for sharing
